Is there any thing going on with AO-40 such as a change in it's status?
It sure was fun working it.

Hi John,
I would say it's pretty much dead. It's just the fact nobody wants to play taps. Many, including myself, would just love to have it magically re-appear and work like nothing ever happened. Unfortunately, I don't see this occuring. I can't seem to recall if there ever was an "official bulletin" indicating that AO-40 is indeed dead. If it hasn't, it should be, so we can focus on current and future projects.

Is it possible to have the next satellite battery system wired in a way to bypass the batteries bank in the event of a failure of one cell or multiples cells? This bypass will let the solar panel power flowing directly to the sat equipment. If such a system was feasible could be AO-40 will be with us today? just note i wrote "could be"
DSTAR in Europe (UK) I see plans afoot to allocate the top end of 144 MHz in the United Kingdom for GMSK (DV) linking (DSTAR) just hope it will not mixed up with satellite band plan.

CUT -----------------
Lets look at AO-7 Old technology still works except period of time (long ...) when chemical battery was short circuit. I think that new projects were and are too complicated. Too many devices in limited space of space-craft, too many experiments. Maybe if more attention has been focused on critical parts ... sorry I am not an expert but it is my opinion - simpler but more heavy duty, more resistant on high overload during lift.

Unfortunately, I wasn't ever able to partake in the joy of operating on AO-40 but I've read an awful lot about it and from what that reading leads me to believe, I don't see it magically coming to life ala AO-7. I think the best thing we can do is hope that someday a launch opportunity will come available for P3-E and in the mean time continue to support AMSAT NA in it's efforts to get any type of birds in orbit, be they LEO's MEO's or GEO's. Just my humble opinion but I think the absolute worst thing we can do is try to undermine AMSAT NA via nasty and critical post or to fight amongst ourselves about things like LEO vs. HEO or FM vs. linear transponders. I've just returned to sat operation after a hiatus of about a year and I'm very happy to see the new focus, resolve and vision of the BOD. I'm on a very tight budget these days but as soon as I can possibly afford it, I intend to re up my membership. 73, Michael, W4HIJ Jeff Yanko wrote:
