Has anyone paired a D74a with say a FT-817 to work the linear birds portable? I'm thinking of picking one up to have the SSB receive capability(or visa versa). I remember years ago trying this with a TH-F6A and was really disappointed in the wwiiddddeee receiver performance. Is the D74a able to rx a 3k wide sig properly? Just trying to make sure before I pull the trigger...

Jeff,
I have used the 817/D74 pair for the SSB birds. All-mode RX in the D74 is much better than the TH-F6A. Just have to adapt to a VFO knob that isn't (relatively) large and smooth turning as the 817. You can also use the D74's recording function so you don't forget who you work. Make sure the recorder is set for the VFO you use for SSB RX.
Good luck, and 73!

Hi Patrick, thanks for the quick reply. That was the answer I was looking for. Also the recording function is a bonus....

I agree with Patrick. The TH-D74 and FT-817 make a good SSB satellite combination. I recently posted a review on my local club site below: http://omarcclub.org/forum/discussion/240/kenwood-th-d74-really#latest The all mode RX on the TH-D74 is pretty good for VHF and UHF use. The built in audio recorder is fantastic. The Kenwood is a good radio for satellite operation in my book for these two reasons. I find the up/down arrows makes for good tuning rather than the top knob on the D74 also. Have not tried it yet related to satellite use, but Kenwood also has a nice remote control application for the D74 that may have some satellite use case usability I hope to test my theory out on soon. I see a few vendors have put the TH-D74 on sale, so hope you pick one up before they go back up to regular price.
