For the last week or 2 there seems to be a constant carrier on AO-51. I'm hearing people getting into the bird, but I cannot, even when running 50 watts into my little 3 element yagi. Is someone trying to jam this thing ? Only notice it on AO-51.

A few others have mentioned similar things, and immediately after the reload I heard a carrier a few times on western passes. I'll listen to the 435.300 downlink some more and maybe we can noodle out what and where if there is something there.

Drew,
There definitely is something there. -------------- Original message from "Andrew Glasbrenner" glasbrenner@mindspring.com: --------------

I just watched and recorded a pass of FO-29 over the US on my SDR-IQ. Recall FO-29 has a linear transponder with an input from 145.900 to 146.000. There were some rather strong carriers that would roughly correspond to 145.920 or thereabouts. I'll try to better identify them and post a screenshot tomorrow. They did not look like the typical FM interference we see on the other end of the transponder.
Meanwhile, I'd like to ask everyone to take a listen on 145.920 around your local area, and maybe we will get lucky and find out what and where this QRM is coming from.

Then can we eliminate the QRM with AO-51's Orbital Laser Gun? ;)

OpSec and ITAR prevent me from commenting.

P.S. I generally prefer the rail guns set to auto cycle.

This is a capture of FO-29 last night that shows the carriers on and around the 145.920 uplink. There may be some low level modulation on some of them. My guess is they are some of the same long distance phones that were plaguing AO-27 and SO-50 a few years ago. Observations from myself and others indicate they go LOS about the time the edge of the footprint crosses the mid Atlantic states. Notice the Doppler curve is different between the three on the right.
Meanwhile, we plan to temporarily move the AO-51 main uplink to 145.88, our normal 2nd channel uplink. We'll post a message to the -bb as soon as the change is made.

Drew,
Thanks a bunch for doing this. Thanks to the whole control team for the ongoing diligence and efforts.
