Many of theses adaptor are not made to withstand pressure/push pull twisting from the coaxial cable. I used a lot of them and found the barrel was dismantling from the connector body (Cheap workmanship). They also break if you put too much pressure with pliers when you tighten them.
The coaxial cable should be attached firmly at least at 7 inches before the connection point and making them in the middle of 2 coaxial free floating run of cable is not also a good idea. PL otr N type female to female adaptor are more stronger for that use.
I find some in the used boxes at some hamfest that are made in steel instead of aluminium, you can see they are made stronger as they weight more. Those resist more than the usual cheap one.

Pliers? They're only designad to be finger tight.

I know but with our weather temperature variation here minus 25C up to +34C hand tightening is not enough it came loose and moisture penetrate if connection are not tighten enough. When i wrote " too much pressure" that's what i have in mind but the higher quality adaptor resist much more than the cheap aluminium available on the wall. If i one day i can get a torque meter i will be able to confirm how much difference they can tolerate before dismantling.
BTW i'm only giving about 1/4 turn pass the hand tightening point. I measure with a caliper the barrel thickness of the cheap metal adaptor at .5mm and the higher quality barrel are at 1.5mm. I suspect instead of using an O ring barrel blocking the high quality seems to have thicker blocking ring.

Hi Randy, N2CUA
For my needs with the adapters I use a TPI Coax Adapter Connector Kit model TPI 3000A Using the above Kit you can built your adapter by yourself screwing an Universal Interface with all type of connectors like BNC male ,BNC female, N male,N female, UHF male, UHF female, TNC male, TNC female, SMA male, SMA female, Mini UHF male ,Mini UHF female, F male, F female, RCA male, and RCA female.
Into the above KIT there are 30 silver plated pieces and teflon PTFE insulated suitable for any adapter combination
6 Universal Interfaces 2 BNC male 2 BNC female 2 N male 2 N female 2 UHF male 2 UHF female 2 TNC male 2 TNC female 1 SMA male 1 SMA female 1 Mini UHF male 1 Mini UHF female 1 F male 1 F female 1 RCA male 1 RCA female
At the end of your needs you can unscrew the universal interface between the two pieces of the combined adapter and reuse all of tree pices for another combination in the future both in the lab or outside at the antennas.
Just to remember where I have employed any combined adapter I use to put a note on paper and save it into the adapters box.
The above Kit was advertised by QST many years ago by the TEST PROBES INC TPI toll free 1-800-368-5719 but I don't know if this is still a valid phone numbar but probably you can find the above Company searching in internet by Google.
I am sure that many old timers reading AMSAT-BB are using the above TPI Adapter Kit and they can help you to find the TPI address in USA.

Before you go ordering through the mail (most efficient way) Check your local Radio Shack. I went in there and was surprised at the selection on the wall. 73, Dee, NB2F

And, I would guess, the lack of quality. Unlikely to get PTFE insulation and silver and gold plate there.

Yes, Quality and Radio Shack items are not #1, however, if you need something ASAP--Find another place to walk into and find something amateur radio related except the local Ham stores (far and few between...) That's why I like the internet purchases. Pick what you want. Dee, NB2F

Unfortunately, the quality of the vast majority of r.f. connectors sold at Radio Shack has to improve considerably to even make a rating of "dismal"! For example, I have run into PL-259 connectors with over 1 dB of loss PER connector on 450 MHz.
Mouser ( http://www.mouser.com ) has various adapters as well as other sources that have been given.

The best supplier that I found on the web - from E-Bay is http://www.daveshobbyshop.com/
They have a very large selection of RF adaptors, their prices are quite good, and they ship immediately.
Have ordered both Male and Female to SO-239 connectors from them.
