All,
Tried with a handheld with a whip, heard a couple calls but couldn't make them out. Anyone have success with a like setup?

Hi Tim: I listened to that pass, heard several stations but was not able to make a single contact. Using full duplex, I know I reached the bird, as I heard myself loud and clear. I guess the other stations had lesser luck with the downlink side. I did not hear your callsign though.
I sometimes use a whip, a Pryme Al-800 telescopic one, but rarely with SO-50 as it is a tougher bird to work. If you are looking for better antennas, I recommend the Arrow and the Elk ones.

Tim, check with N5AFV. Allen has had good success using the larger AL800 antenna on his handheld. I've worked him from quite a few Texas grids. He may have tips on using this setup on a website and is always anxious to help.

You could work it even with a standard rubber duck and 1.5 W. You can see it in this video http://eb4dka.batcave.net/so50.html working with a VX-2R "out of the box".
