Maintenance depot or individual to repair an ICOM IC-821
Hello,
A fellow ham in my radio club has an ICOM IC-821 that has developed a problem. The transmit power on 2M has dropped from its nominal 45 Watts to 18 Watts. He has already attempted to obtain service through ICOM and some other repair services without success. Is anyone aware of a repair outlet or an individual that is knowledgeable of the IC-821 in order to perform repairs?

Are you sure it is bad? The radio may be folding back due to high SWR. Water or bad connections can do this. If you have already checked this then ignore my 2 cents worth. Good luck.

He needs to send it to MTS. Former Icom repair tech who does outstanding work at reasonable rates.

Mac,
I also recommend MTS. I had some issues with my IC-821, including low output power. I called Scott and he made a series of suggestions that solved my problems.
For the low output power, check the SWR. The IC-821 will detect high SWR and reduce the output to save the finals. Fix the SWR and the RF power returns.

Mac,
Ask the person realizing the repair to check Q42 and Q43 (RN2425) in the main unit. Many IC-821H presented a problem with low power, including mine. The problem is normally due to a partial damage of Q42 and/or Q43 transistors in the power control circuits (for both VHF and UHF). It is advisable to replace both transistors by a part that can tolerate higher power levels. A p-channel switching mosfet can do the job.
