Hi all,
If you could only afford one of the above, which one would you go for? If you have both I'm interested in which one you currently use the most? I'm a few weeks away from setting up a simple az/ele system on 2 and 70 having moved house 18 months ago, so have not worked the birds for a while and am out of touch with what's available / popular. Can only afford the one, at least to start with so could do with the wisdom of this group to help the choice.
Many thanks for any advice,
Dominic G6NQO
70cm.
2m satellite signals are generally stronger and less likely to need a preamp due to 9dB less path loss and less losses in your coax at the lower frequency.

Thanks all for your great and detailed responses - many direct to me and all much appreciated. Of all the criteria I had’t considered the increased loss of the coax at the higher frequencies which should have been obvious, and I think FO-29 and SO-50 would most benefit from the amp initially. I’m going to go for UHF to start with and keep saving for VHF later.
Thanks again,
Dominic G6NQO

I for one do not recommend the Mirage 2 or 70cm pre-amps unless they are the older models or you are not using them in full-duplex satellite mode. The newer versions are in a plastic box with stainless steel mounting bracket. No shielding and as a result strong intermod in full-duplex.
I'm in the market myself for another 2-meter mast mounted to replace the newer Mirage KP-2 that I once had since I use them primarily for satellite work.
To answer your other question, I would, when possible, use mast mounted pre-amps instead of in-shack due to that they amplify noise as well as signals. Mount near the antenna you'll have more of the signal amplified and less noise. This is more prevalent when going higher in frequency such as 70 cm.
