Hi folks, I am real close to getting the OLPC To run a tnc and rig. I found A software called PICOCOM/MINICOM Thats similar to hyperterm in windows. Just type yum install picocom or yum install minicom at the terminal acitivity root. Then type the name to start it. anyone want to work with me on it contact me off list. Now we can use them for sat work, packet, aprs. emcom,, etc.

Brings up the question, what is an OLPC? I do a google search and end up with "One Laptop Per Child". I don't think that is the proper context.

You buy one and get one free that gets donated to some 3rd world kid. They ran a one month special last year in Nov. Rumor is that they will repeat the offer this november. I was super gung ho. Bought 3 of them. Fantastic HAM radio laptop, has WIFI built in, runs linux, cheap, color display designed for visibility outside in the sun, low power, solar power or hand crank, etc. The ideal ham radio application machine for field/disaster work.
But after I invested $1200 in my three, darned if the greedy USA companies then canceled the offer because they don't want these nearly perfect, ultimately $100 laptops to undercut their high-cost USA sales of comparable consumer laptops. So now only a few of us have them. But again, rumor is they will repeat the sale this november?

What USB to serial port device do you use?

"OLPC" *is* the "One Laptop Per Child" project. These are small, low-powered "kid sized" laptops that run a version of Linux, and are extremely rugged. I had one for a few months and then sold it as it didn't meet my needs. I'm not knocking it, but it was too small for me to use comfortably. Jim KQ6EA

I think most folk with "OLPC" are referring to the linux distribution rather than the actual laptops. You can download it and get the same thing. I guess the reasoning would be that it's got a simple UI and mesh networking, etc, etc.

It's fully described as a OLPC XO laptop. I've got one, and find it painful to use, although it's got some useful and interesting features. I don't have time for that difficulty.
This one shows some possible problems with charging, so I sometimes had to use plugged in, mostly for the two months I was traveling with it. It does attract attention, though. Make an offer if you're interested in buying it.

OLPC produced a user-repairable (to a degree!), 2-watt laptop with built-in wifi, mesh networking, and a screen viewable indoors or out... so it's easy to see the ham radio potential. The laptops are designed for children (ages 6-12) in third-world countries, the Sugar interface is a bit awkward, and there have been some serious blunders along the way. These have dampened enthusiasm in the USA.
The official website is at www.laptop.org. Solid information is in the wiki: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Home Unofficial but useful source: http://www.olpcnews.com/
The second 'Give One, Get One' (G1,G1) program starts in November and ships through Amazon.

I had mine on display at the NASA openouse outside in my Ham radio idisplay and had it hooked to a 1 watt solar panel. I was surprised when it went dead a few hours later (initial state of battery unknown)..
So overnight, I put it on a power supply and observed that the run current is 480 mA and the sleep current is 360 mA. That surprised me. At 12 volts, that is more like 6 watts than 2. No wonder my 100 mA solar panel didn't help much... Yes, the internal battery is runnning around 6 volts which means about 3 watts, but still you have to give it at least 11.8 volts or so before the switching regulator kicks in and draws much at all...
So to me it is a surprising 6 watts of etxternal power consumption to power it...
Still I love it. Bob, WB4APR
