FINALLY back on the air

We finally solved the major cause of the 35 year old electrical problems here at home and I am back on the air here after a 3 day absence ( 7 AM Thursday to 2:30 PM Saturday). The problems we found are direct contributers to everything from computer problems, to light bulbs burning out way too fast, to pool pumps causing the house to brown, and on and on that we have been experiencing. As I kept upgrading appliances and adding new toys, the situation deteriorated until I was forced to solve it. Anyway, I am back to where I can answer email at last. SDX, MRAM and Radiation

Hello! I have heard anecdotal assertions that MRAM (see < URL:http://www.freescale.com/mram >) is inherently SEU immune from radiation, or at least very tolerant. Does anyone have any knowledge of this? I ask because the Freescale part is pretty tempting, even if its standby current drain is a little high. Thinking in terms of SDX here... 73, Lyle KK7P

A wild thought

Team: I've been thinking about this for a while. Recent publicity for Eagle in multiple publications has resurrected the thought, so I seek your comments. I'm considering seeking, for each discrete peer review, an additional review team member from AMSAT membership at large. Heretofore we've collected peer review teams from a subset of Eagle team members with possibly a few known additions. I'm considering seeking a single at-large reivewer from within AMSAT MEMBERSHIP. In my vision, I'd go out to amsat-bb and ANS and solicit qualified volunteers. Such volunteers would have to be verifiable members of AMSAT-NA or another AMSAT organization, and would be asked to send me a resume or c.v. I would use these to select the MOST qualified volunteer for a single at-large position on the peer review team. (I say that I would make the selection, mostly to keep the additional admin burden off you; if any of you want to help me choose, thanks!) I would be responsible for forwarding that individual all necessary materials to do the peer review. I would be responsible for coordinating with Bob and Eric that that at-large member would have access to the AMSAT Engineering channel on TeamSpeak for that particularl peer review (the password changes for each discrete topic.) The advantages I see in this: -- furthers our "openness" with deeds not words -- gives motivated new talent an opportunity to share their expertise with us -- gives us a chance to evaluate, select, and motivate new talent -- advances general membership "buy-in" -- gives us a better ultimate product --may lead us to new Eale team members! I see no down-side to this. If you do, please advise ASAP. If you think this is a good idea, please let me know also. If you have any ideas on how to make the peer review process better, I'd like to hear that as well. I'd like your responses by Friday 5 January. If we decide to proceed, I'd lke to include this in my next Journal article, which will be written this weekend. Finally, I hope to convene a peer review of the UHF receiver ATP soon. For obvious reasons, I intend to use the same team which did the UHF receiver design peer review, plus a couple of additions (w2gps and n4hy) plus the at-large member, unless you convince me the latter is a bad idea. Peer Review

I think the peer review proposal is a great idea. However, I'd suggest making the request for volunteers in the journal and not on AMSAT-BB. One could argue that the statements "is qualified to conduct technical peer review" and "reads AMSAT-BB on a regular basis" are negatively correlated... Matt

Florida lab close out

Bob Davis, Drew Glassbrenner with help from Lou McFadin, Bob McGwier, Lee McLamb, and Stan Wood have mostly emptied the storage facility, reclaimed our clean room from Florida Space Institute, the equipment that was in individual homes and not being used for current AMSAT projects and begun the move to the Pocomoke City Hawk facility. The storage facility will be emptied and closed by the end of its lease on January 21. I have a picture that will finally demonstrate the scope of our new facility. It is the 24 foot Budget rental truck with 1/3 of the clean room inside it that I drove from Orlando to Pocomoke City. It is all the way inside and dwarfed by the new building. Drew and Bob Davis will follow with the rest of the trucks next Wednesday. This was a 3 truck, 3 driver move. Thursday and Friday will be "fork lift unload day" with Rick Hambly and friends coming over to help unload. Saturday will be inventory and sort day. Also in my pictures are the new walls going up where the clean room will be housed. The office space walls will be up this week and most of the lab walls will be by the weekend. Enough space is being left for now to get the air handlers and support structure in through the wall. There is very little doubt this will be the nicest lab and integration facility we have ever had in AMSAT-NA. It is larger and nicer than the fish bowl by quite a bit. The ZEL would rival it but nothing else. Let's' build a few spacecraft! Happy New Year, Bob N4HY -- AMSAT Director and VP Engineering. Ansoft University Program

All, Martha has just placed an order for 5 copies of Ansoft's HF software. The full commercial versions of the following software are included in the annual $1,000 use license cost: HFSS Q3D Designer EPhysics Optimetrics Multiprocessor Full Wave Spice CAD Translator For information, see http://www.ansoft.com/rf_microwave.cfm. These will be available on a rotating basis from a central license server, just as our Cadence (OrCAD) and Mentor Graphics software is now. That allows any number of users up to five at a time. Remember, use of this software is for AMSAT authorized activities only, in accordance with our "university" license. The learning curve will be steep but the rewards are great for the RF designer.
