If you say

"get rssi" it is read from the register right then and there.  It looks like (need to ask Chris) it also checks the RSSI before it accepts a package, and in that case it also prints it out only moments after it took it.  And it looks like it is only accepting (and printing) it if it is greater than 170 (raw value) which I think is -85dBm.
