An International Space Station Expedition 17 ARISS school contact has been planned with participants at Scuola Media Statale Donato Forlani, Conversano, Italy on 07 October. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 1129 UTC. The contact will be a direct contact between stations OR4ISS and IZ7MKW. The contact should be audible over Europe. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The participants are expected to conduct the conversation in English. The Scuola media D. Forlani is a middle school in the suburb of Conversano, a small town located 30km from Bari in South-east Italy The school has 30 classrooms and various laboratories, including an astronomy lab. About 250 pupils attend the school, aged from 11 to 14. Extracurricular activities include English conversation, sport, theatre, the environment and other research activities. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What is the most ambitious spatial project for the future? 2. What do you see at the moment when you are looking outside the ISS? 3. How does it feel to be in space? 4. Is it difficult to get used to zero gravity? 5. What do you think about extraterrestrial life in the universe? 6. How many years ago did you start your career as astronaut? 7. What studies are necessary to become an astronaut? 8. Where does the electric power come from on board the ISS? 9. Was it your childhood dream to become an astronaut? 10. At what age did you discover your passion for space? 11. What do you miss most from Earth during the mission? 12. How long can a human being stay in orbit without any physical problems? 13. What happens if an astronaut gets seriously ill in space? 14. What do you think about future projects of living on the moon? 15. What systems do you use for the communication to the Earth? 16. Is there any danger for the ISS module to be hit by Space debris? 17. How are the daily astronauts´ duties organized on board the ISS? 18. What kind of optical instruments have you on board to watch the space? 19. What are the main scientific experiments during Expedition 17? 20. The ISS cross band repeater is on and working extremely well. The 06.50utc UK pass was accessible during the full period of visibility however there were few stations and only one contact was made with DL0SP, thank you Mario. Can I stress the importance of the Doppler correction on the uplink. It was apparent that there were at least two other stations that would have been perfectly readable had this been correct. All, I received the following e-mail today from Owen Garriott, W5LFL and wanted to share this with the Amateur Community. Please post this and pass it to others in the amateur radio community, as appropriate. 73, Frank H. Bauer, KA3HDO AMSAT-NA V.P. for Human Spaceflight Programs ARSIS International Chairman --------------------------------------------- Richard, W5KWQ, landed in Kazakhstan on Friday, 24 October 2008 at about 0936 local time and was met there by his father Owen, W5LFL. They became the first American "second generation" father/son combination to have both flown in space and the first cosmonaut/astronaut-trained pair in the world. They returned to Star City near Moscow that afternoon for medical evaluation and this is the first interview provided by Richard the very next day. It is transcribed and delivered by Owen to the ham community. "On my recent flight I had the great opportunity to speak directly with and trade call signs with hundreds of hams around the globe. For me it was a unexpected joy to find so many enthusiastic hams, who were so well informed and interested in my activities in orbit. When I began my transmissions with preplanned SSTV images including "pirate messages", test patterns and family images, I did not know how they would be received. But it seemed that fellow hams really enjoyed seeing this beginning to my time on the International Space Station (ISS). Throughout the bulk of my 10 days on the ISS I tried to be speaking by voice or transmitting SSTV images whenever possible. After my first 100 or so QSOs, I understood how well "networked" the global ham community really is. I received specific reports back through Mission Control-Moscow about technical aspects of my work and how the community was enjoying the transmissions. This redoubled my enthusiasm to do quality work for the amateur radio legions around the world as I realized how much it meant to those with whom I had the chance to talk. By late in my flight I had contacted many hundreds of hams by voice and I have good records of these contacts. Finally I sent some "Goodbye" images on my last day in space. I also contacted many hams that had listened to or contacted my father from space 25 years ago. Some hams I contacted 2 to 4 times on my flight. On those last days I was very moved when sent many "soft landing" messages from individuals and classrooms full of children as I passed by. The ham community has added greatly to my personal feelings of success on my flight. I can only hope that you enjoyed it as much as I did. Thanks so much and 73, Richard, W5KWQ"

ISS crossband repeater active

Mike Fincke elected to activate the U/v crossband repeater on ISS today. Enjoy while it is up. Reminder, uplink is UHF (437.800 MHz) which can have up to 10 KHz of Doppler either side of the center frequency. Downlink is 145.800 MHz. No PL tone. Kenneth - N5VHO

Luc, I have a 11 minute recording that starts about 1819utc. I don't have any software except Windows sound recorder. As far as I know, it will only make short recordings. (one minute) I can edit out the dead air and make a few recordings for you. I use audacity software for recording and editing. Ok . I guess i can put my 1kw 2m amp away. I made 47 voice contacts with Richard, did I win the contest? For some reason I didn't get any mail back from anyone who copied any of my pic's even with the kilowatt into my KLM 22c ant. I tried every pass. Seriously it was the most fun I've seen everyone have with ISS in a long time. As I mentioned in a previous post, I didn't get anything that day (technical difficulties)... and I have some friends who have good QSO's, or some just partial callsigns coming back... but they would really like to get an audio clip. Hi all, Wow! Awesome, wasn't it? I guess its now over, as Richard announced this was his last pass (1818 UTC, 23 Oct) before shutting down the radios to prepare for departure. I would like to express my thanks to all of those involved who helped Richard make this mission such a "radio-active" experience on both voice and SSTV. It was a blast! ISS SSTV - My Last Image Just Received

Well that's it for me and the UK. Pass 12.09utc, the last visible here in the UK before Richard leaves, and another picture to add to the collection. Seems to have been a small problem up there as the first image started before the TX keyed up and only a quarter of the second image was sent before the TX went off.
