An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Rakuyo Technical High School, Kyoto, Japan on 12 Dec. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 08:36 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and 8N3LR. The contact should be audible over Japan and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English.
Since 2012, Kyoto Municipal Rakuyo Technical Senior High School has launched a project called “The Closest High School to Space” and conducted natural science education dealing with “space.” This project covers various subjects from astronomy –the observation of annular solar eclipse –to space engineering –rockets and artificial satellites. This March we succeeded in launching a rocket with a hybrid engine up to 300 meters high. We also work on robots and electronic handicrafts as scientific technology education.
We plan to participate in ARISS program for this time as part of our project “The Closest High School to Space.” Some students of our school and children from a nearby elementary school are to participate in the program. Specifically, 21 elementary school children –fifth and sixth graders from Karahashi Elementary School, who are especially interested in space –will communicate with the International Space Station with the assistance of our high school students.
Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows:
1. Why did you decide to become an astronaut?
2. What was the hardest training to become an astronaut?
3. If aliens do exist, on what planets do you think they are?
4. What was the greatest trouble you’d had before you were chosen as the
commander?
5. How did you feel when you were appointed commander?
6. Is there anything you carry with you whenever you go to space?
7. How heavy is the spacesuit when you wear it on the earth?
8. What was your impression when you first saw the earth from outer space?
9. How does the earth look when it’s seen from space 400 km away?
10. How can stars be seen from the ISS?
11. Do constellations look the same from the ISS as they do from the earth?
12. Where and how do you sleep in the ISS?
13 Do you have a good sleep in space?
14 Don’t you feel sick with the ISS revolving around the earth?
15 Of the experiments you’re going to try in this mission, what do you
expect to be the most interesting?
16 What do you enjoy doing while you’re in space?
17 Which do you like better, staying in space or on the earth?
18 What would you like to do or try to do while you’re in the ISS?
19. What was the hardest operation you’d ever engaged in?
20 In a poster of EXP 38, you’re watching the earth through a magnifying
glass. Is this an idea of your own?
21 What is it about space that makes you feel amazed or excited?

ARISS is an international educational outreach program partnering the participating space agencies, NASA, Russian Space Agency, ESA, CNES, JAXA, and CSA, with the AMSAT and IARU organizations from participating countries.
ARISS offers an opportunity for students to experience the excitement of Amateur Radio by talking directly with crewmembers on-board the International Space Station. Teachers, parents and communities see, first hand, how Amateur Radio and crewmembers on ISS can energize youngsters' interest in science, technology, and learning. Further information on the ARISS program is available on the website http://www.ariss.org/ (graciously hosted by the Radio Amateurs of Canada).
