When I had my QSO with Kjell on the ISS back in July 2022 it all happened suddenly and as a total surprise. I had wanted to have an ISS QSO for some time but a little research shows that it's pretty difficult and unlikely - so I never burned any calories trying. July 24, 2022 was just another typical ISS pass - typical pileup over the US. I was just fighting to get in a contact or two for the pass and out of the blue Kjell came on and started having short QSOs with whoever happened to be on. It took me a few frantic tries to make contact. Let me say, it's a real rush to hear "thanks and 73 from the International Space Station"! Fortunately I was able to find someone who recorded the audio of the pass and got a copy of it. After Kjell was back on Earth I was sent a signed picture of him, a short note and a couple of mission stickers, which I have framed on my shack wall (picture on QRZ).
I indeed count myself very lucky - especially given I wasn't even trying. Good luck to all that are trying, I wish you all can have the experience. N7AY

My radio has 145.800 in the scan list 24/7 just in case someone calls a CQ, the crew onboard are active and supporting school contacts which is great and I appreciate , I still remember hearing those CQ's from Richard Garroitt (W5KWQ) and Bill McArthur (KC5ACR), Bill logged 1.8 K QSO's with Radio Hams around the world. Still waiting for a CQ call from the ISS.

Mark,
I fully agree and this is the basis of my request. If anyone have a QSO with an ISS astronaut just please tell him that we in the Indian Ocean would really like to have a chat with him hopefully it make work out as the first ever HAM contact with the ISS from 3B8.

It doesn't matter where you are on the planet, casual ham contacts with astronauts are exceptionally rare unless there happens to be a crew member aboard who is particularly interested in getting on the air. Most of the astronauts only have the ham license because it's part of their mission training for use of ARISS for school contacts. Only on the occasions when we have someone such as Kjell Lindgren, KO5MOS, aboard are you likely to hear the ISS operating casually. -- Mark D. Yes, same for me as VE3SVF over Toronto. The ISS is never active here. However, the it appears to only be active over Europe when the downlink from the crew is on. Same request essentially, except Toronto as well please!! 73! In case you make a contact with astronaut on board the ISS could you please ask him to try to listen or call when over Mauritius during his free time. I will try to call each time possible in the next 2 weeks.
