"To see if I can make it" is fine. But once you see that you have made it, why not leave some air time for other folks?
Why would a person keep transmitting once the person has accomplished his/her purpose?

The point that I think others are trying to make is: Don't use up potential channel time when you're not actively making a QSO with the ISS. Someone else, who may be using far less power than you do, may be trying to make that elusive contact.
