If you go the "secondary battery in the boot" route, consider using a battery designed for the task rather than a regular car/lorry battery which is designed for short bursts of high current with minimal discharge before recharge. Also consider a battery boost device such as the MFJ-4416C so your radio sees 13.8 volts even if the battery is discharged to a lower value.
Of course if you already have an extra battery available and your radio is happy at 12.2VDC, this is unnecessary.
