A possible route for RX: cheap LNB ($15 USD) such as the FTW 200 on eBay, some retuning of the input filter to move it down into the amateur band, and a RTL-SDR dongle.
Seems like there is a lot of 2.4 GHz hardware around (hihi) for the TX side.

A group of use are hoping to use the Lime / bladeRF SDR transceivers to work the satellite, obviously with a LNB on receive. So far, so good, software is working more or less.
The SDR solution should offer maximum flexibility as long as the programmers gets there act together.
