Thinking about it I’m skeptical, but I’m still wondering if anyone has tried using the IC-R30 as a small, portable receiver for use with either linear or FM sats. Its claimed sensitivity is in the 0.3 microvolt range, so I am curious if, with a 6dB or so handheld yagi, it would have good enough ears for receiving downlink signals.
Still looking for a DE QSO, by the way. I’m always happy to pass out FN54/Maine if anyone needs it.

It’s reviewed in the latest QST. ARRL labs measured the 12 dB SINAD for FM on both 2m and 70cm at 0.14 uV, which should be plenty fine.
The one thing that I think may be problematic with the R30 is overload from nearby RF in urban areas.

I've used the IC-R30 for the Rx side of SATs for years. It is a good receive only radio. The built in recorder is a great feature. As you point out, it's not the most sensitive receiver ever made but it is fully adequate for both FM and Linear/ssb/cw operation. My only issue with it is the audio Amp gain. When picking up weak signals on SSB the audio level can be too low for my deaf ears, but if you have good hearing that won't be a problem. Another thing to note is that it is an analog radio, no digital modes or APRS. I use it primarily with a Arrow yagi. So there are definitely a lot of better radios out there but the IC-R30 put me on the sats in the first place and I never stopped using it. Have Fun!
