Thanks John. Very informative post.
Just took a 15 minute, 8 deg max elevation pass and the beacon was exactly where it should be (time wise) and solid for the entire pass. Pity I don't copy morse by ear. I'll get fldigi connected perhaps for the next pass.

You're welcome.
Glad to hear the beacon sounds good on your end and is at the right frequency.
Hope to work you on the birds sometime.

John,
Just worked another pass on XW-3. More observations:
My current setup is as follows: FT-847 RHCP 12 elements on 2m for uplink running 50W thru LM400 RHCP 26 elements on 70cm for downlink thru LM600 along with a 20dB LNA with 0.8dB NF
I can barely hear my downlink (or any other downlink for that matter). The beacon is stronger – but not booming. This last pass was 38.8 degs at max elevation…. And was barely even tickling the S-meter. I slewed the beam (while listening to the beacon) to make sure I was pointed correctly and found no improvement except where MacDoppler said I should be pointing (i.e. the Keps are correct).
As for the comment in the article when comparing the beacon to other CAS satellites (I believe they are on 2m) that only equates to only 4.7dB (10*log(145.9Mhz/435.2MHz). While I agree that there is additional path loss, it is not even an S unit (6-dB) on the rig so is barely noticeable in this instance.
Herb
