BCON button, TH72A
Had some glitches with my 72A, so I did a hard reset on the unit.
Now, when pressing the BCON button on the keypad, BCON does not appear on the display screen.
I've gone through the set-up for adding callsign, date/time, etc, but still no luck in enabling the BCON icon. (Unit receives APRS just fine.)
Am I overlooking something simple?
Thank you Philip N4HF
I should add that the internal GPS is turned on, and I've left the rig outside with a clear path to the sky for several minutes to get a GPS lock. Hasn't made any difference to BCON showing up on the display

Is the TNC on? Is the squelch closed? By default Data Carrier Detect (DCD) is enabled and that won't let you send packets if the squelch is open.

I vaguely remember an issue about the bands. Does it only work with VFO A and B on the same band? Or maybe you have to be in single VFO mode? I don't remember but I do remember seeing something similar.

I actually recently reset mine and hadn't used it for APRS yet. I just turned on the TNC and tried to beacon and it didn't work. I changed the callsign in the APRS Basic Set menu from "NOCALL" to my callsign and it worked.
There is a setting to select which side of the radio is the "data" side but you can press beacon while the radio is on either side and it will beacon on whatever side is selected as the data side.

Check please the path. Is it SQL open. If busy then no TX.
Instead of GPS use constant position. You can set it manuslly eg. JO82he.

I just read that Philip already set his callsign. Not sure then. I am not sure what beacon icon you're talking about. When I press it I see "STA" and the radio transmits. That has always worked for me in the past.

Check the Beacon TX Algorithm (that’s menu 611 on the D710, not sure if it’s the same on the 72). That might be set for manual, so it only beacons when you press the BCON button.

I just remembered that Armand has the answer that was causing me problems a couple years ago. APRS will not beacon if someone else is transmitting on the frequency, and on the D72, it determines that by looking for open squelch. If you are used to doing satellites, you may have adjusted the squelch to be always open, in which case APRS will never beacon!
Thanks for the reminder Armand!

You can disable DCD sense in menu 320 and it will TX regardless of whether or not there is a signal/squelch is open. You might flood the digipeater and miss decodes, though.

I always manually BCN when operating APRS satellites as it allows me to send retries. Not sure if this is best practice. Waiting for auto beacon seemed unreliable

You can disable DCD sense in menu 320 and it will TX regardless of whether or not there is a signal/squelch is open. You might flood the digipeater and miss decodes, though.

Check the Beacon TX Algorithm (that’s menu 611 on the D710, not sure if it’s the same on the 72). That might be set for manual, so it only beacons when you press the BCON button.

I just read that Philip already set his callsign. Not sure then. I am not sure what beacon icon you're talking about. When I press it I see "STA" and the radio transmits. That has always worked for me in the past.

I vaguely remember an issue about the bands. Does it only work with VFO A and B on the same band? Or maybe you have to be in single VFO mode? I don't remember but I do remember seeing something similar.

Is the TNC on? Is the squelch closed? By default Data Carrier Detect (DCD) is enabled and that won't let you send packets if the squelch is open.
