Several of us that talk on the linear birds in the morning have noticed that SatPC32's Satellites, Update Keps, selected keps file, routine returns either a 'No Keplerian data found!' or a 'Download failed' error. I had to manually copy and paste the kep data from the AMSAT site to get a fresh set. I tried this on two different PC's here. As I haven't updated any of my s/w on this end I'm assuming this is an issue on the AMSAT kep site. Anyone know what's going on here ?

Hi Jeff,
I noticed that as well.
If you open the path for the data, there you will notice new data at the top above the actual kep data, and I believe that this data is confusing SatPC32

Hmm...it looks like extra LFs have been added to the file. NASA.ALL has always included the headers, so that won't cause SatPC32 any issues.
Try using http://www.amsat.org/tle/current/nasabare.txt until the file can be corrected

Use the ”bare elements” file. The “bare elements” are just that bare elements.
Paul is correct the “bulletin format elements” should not be a problem ether. Bhut, they are designed for bulletin boards systems.

Hi Ray. I always ran nasa.all , or at least for the last few years at this location. So there was a change or an error in the nasa.all file that several long time uses have noticed in the last few days. I switched over to nasabare, but it would be a good idea to send out a notice to let people know if the format of any of the kep files are being changed...

Just a suggestion to all:
I send all updates (“bulletin format” elements and “bare elements”) in plain text format in order to eliminate any unseen “formatting codes” from the text.
If you are having issues loading the TLE, it might be a good idea to handle the TLE file only with Notepad (with word wrap off).
This will eliminate any hidden format code issues as best we can.

I assume the files are automatically generated by a server somewhere. Perhaps when these files were generated they need the dos2unix treatment or perl -i -p -e 's/\r//g' file command executed against them?

Thanks for all the comments and heads up on the AMSAT website format issue. It seems that things in the server world are subject to continual change.
I create the files myself with no server generation involved and send them directly to the email distribution system and the AMSAT Webpage. I decided years ago that too many servers spoil the soup. It should be data in - data out with no issues and that is how it has been for many years.
I am on the AMSAT email TLE distribution list and I receive the same email TLE distribution that everyone gets each week. I also watch the AMSAT webpage each week.
But … I did see the double space issue with the “bulletin format elements” this week on the AMSAT website. Note that the AMSAT email distribution of the same data this week was correctly formatted (with no double space).
We will investigate the “bulletin format elements” issue on the AMSAT website.
Again thanks for your comments.

I assume the files are automatically generated by a server somewhere. Perhaps when these files were generated they need the dos2unix treatment or perl -i -p -e 's/\r//g' file command executed against them?

I send all updates (“bulletin format” elements and “bare elements”) in plain text format in order to eliminate any unseen “formatting codes” from the text.
If you are having issues loading the TLE, it might be a good idea to handle the TLE file only with Notepad (with word wrap off).
This will eliminate any hidden format code issues as best we can.

Hi Ray. I always ran nasa.all , or at least for the last few years at this location. So there was a change or an error in the nasa.all file that several long time uses have noticed in the last few days. I switched over to nasabare, but it would be a good idea to send out a notice to let people know if the format of any of the kep files are being changed...

Paul is correct the “bulletin format elements” should not be a problem ether. Bhut, they are designed for bulletin boards systems.

Hmm...it looks like extra LFs have been added to the file. NASA.ALL has always included the headers, so that won't cause SatPC32 any issues.
Try using http://www.amsat.org/tle/current/nasabare.txt until the file can be corrected

Brian you are correct. I used the nasabare keps when I copied them to my kepler directory direct. Now I always used nasa.all so I never did the name change the Celestrak kep files. I did the org name change and they do indeed work. This explains the two different errors I was getting. Now running with nasabare renamed nasa.all.

Jeff et al, I have been using the nasabare file. I think it’s because someone once told me it’s updated more frequently than whatever I had been using. There have been no problems with nasabare. I could be mixed up here (often the case), but think I heard Keplerian connoisseurs dine on elements from Celestrak. Those are updated every 15 minutes(?) But I don’t know how to cook them in SatPC32 so I just go the fast-food route. :-) Ray KN2K

Hi Ray. I used Celestrak for many years. For some reason several years ago I switch to nasabare, then to nasa.all. I unfortunately don't recall why I made those choices, but at the time there was a good reason to do so. Maybe I will remember :-)

Celestrak changed their site to a .org. You need to change the SatPC32 config file to account for this.

Jeff,
It appears that this week's Keplerian bulletin, stored as the file "nasa.all" on the AMSAT web site, included extra carriage returns and line feeds, and that evidently is not acceptable to your tracking software. The plain file "nasabare.txt" without the bulletin header does not suffer from this issue.
We will investigate the cause of this problem and expect that it will be corrected for next week's bulletin.

While fixing the source is a good idea, it seems to me that the software in question should be corrected in such a way as to be more tolerant of minor variations in what it's asked to parse. It's not a complicated format.

Or abandon the TLE format for something modern like JSON, YAML or XML. Surely it isn’t hard to produce it in a multitude of formats automatically with a script.

If SatPC32 was open source, we could pitch in and help fix the problem on the consumer end. But it's not, so we have to rely on the single closed-source author if we need changes there. This also, of course, means that if anything ever happens to the author, or if he or she simply loses interest in maintaining it, the users are screwed. (This is why I personally prefer to depend on open source.)
Changing the produced format, or adding more formats, doesn't really help unless the authors of the consuming software can be convinced that their software should adopt something new. If said software is open source, people can contribute to make that happen. It's a different story if the software is closed source, though.
You're right, Mark, that it would be good for people to step up when things need to change. It's unfortunate that the changes we're talking about here, though, are driven by issues with the consuming software, over which we have no control.
Perhaps someone could write either a validation script or a creation script for use by Ray or whoever, before updates are made public - but it would need to be done in a way that *easily* integrates with the process that Ray (or someone else) is already using, so that there's minimal impact on the way things are done now. If that process is documented, a link would be helpful.

For the record I wasn't 'bitching' I was simply making note of it as I realized several other people ware having the same issue. So I made my post not to complain but to simply mention the workaround that I found, just in case someone needed help with a temporary fix. I at this point would like to thank Ray and Joe for all that they do...

Brian,
The future of orbital data will be indeed be changing away from the traditional TLE format as described by TS Kelso at :
http://celestrak.org/NORAD/documentation/gp-data-formats.php
It remains to be seen how the amateur community adapts to this change once the Space Force starts using object numbers that don't fit in the aging TLE format. Hams hate to retire old software... we have the web site configured to allow HTTP access for ancient tracking clients that can't do encrypted HTTPS, and we still get about a dozen downloads a week of the "amsat.pdb" to support PocketSat on PalmOS.

That’s good to hear that they will be producing it in multiple formats. If this was say posted to GitHub where we could inspect the source openly then we could help. I don’t know how these TLEs are produced that led to this problem where we could help.

Careful Brian, you are getting dangerously close to volunteering 🙂
The production of the AMSAT Keplerian bulletin is a semi-automated process that uses an ancient Windows program - source code and author no longer available. Ray Hoad cuts and pastes the output of this program into an e-mail and then posts it to the Keps mailing list. The AMSAT Web server checks the mailman archive once an hour - if it sees a new bulletin, it fires the update script to make nasa.all, nasabare.txt and amsat.pdb current.
The time is right to redo this system because.
1. Matt KM4EXS is putting finishing touches on GitLab access to some other parts of our server, so we have a place for source 2. All TLEs presently come from Space-Track - we no longer have "specials" from Cal Poly or Johnson Spaceflight Center 3. I can't prove it, but I think the Microsoft Outlook Web Application is doing weird things with line feeds sometimes. 4. I have to fuss with the scripts as it is to strip out the extra line feeds and carriage returns, why not do a little more work
The essence of what needs to be done is to maintain a curated list of object numbers, pull the current TLEs from Space-Track.org replace the Space Force name with the AMSAT name (e.g "AO-7" instead of "OSCAR 7") and generate the bulletin text.
Should be pretty straightforward. I'm thinking of a Python 3 script using the https://pypi.org/project/spacetrack/ module. Perhaps the trickiest part of the effort is determining the best way to give Ray a nice secure web page he can log into for maintenance of the list of object number/AMSAT name pairs.

I see the problem. To fix the "download failed" problem, you need to change the "amsat" URL to https://www.amsat.org/tle/current/nasabare.txt. To update this you need to edit the Celestrak.SQF file. You can find this from the "?" in the main menu. Then select "Auxiliary files" and you will see "Celestrak.SQF" at the bottom. This should open in "Notepad" and allow you to edit the file. Save it, then close and restart Sat32PC. This should fix the "download failed" problem. And you can leave it at that.

I see the problem. To fix the "download failed" problem, you need to change the "amsat" URL to https://www.amsat.org/tle/current/nasabare.txt. To update this you need to edit the Celestrak.SQF file. You can find this from the "?" in the main menu. Then select "Auxiliary files" and you will see "Celestrak.SQF" at the bottom. This should open in "Notepad" and allow you to edit the file. Save it, then close and restart Sat32PC. This should fix the "download failed" problem. And you can leave it at that.

Hi Jeff, SatPC32 reads Keplerian data files that conform to the TLE standard (now also files with the new CSV, KVN and XML formats, which can be downloaded from the Celestrak website). As you know, SatPC32 has been working with nasa.all for about 20 years. Recently, however, the format of nasa.all has changed:So far, the data record looked like this (in editors or text programs): ISS 1 25544U 98067A 22230.93505244 .00004937 00000-0 93709-4 0 9996 2 25544 51.6434 25.7288 0005501 134.7627 332.5275 15.50223534354917
This is also the format of all other TLE files I know, e.g. nasabare.txt or the Celestrak TLE files.
The current nasa.all files look like this: ISS
1 25544U 98067A 22230.93505244 .00004937 00000-0 93709-4 0 9996
2 25544 51.6434 25.7288 0005501 134.7627 332.5275 15.50223534354917
Because of the blank lines between the satellite name and data line 1 and between data lines 1 and 2, SatPC32 does not recognize the file as a valid TLE file.So far I do not know why the change was made and whether it will stay that way and also not whether the format still corresponds to the TLE standard. Since there are replacement options - e.g. nasabare.txt contains exactly the same satellites as nasa.all - I will not change anything on SatPC32 for the time being.

Hi Erich. Good to hear from you. I switched over to nasabare yesterday when I realized something was amiss with nasa.all. I was just letting everyone know what I had found. Everything is back to working 100% as usual...
