I've successfully been working the Falconsat-3 PBBS, downloading files and uploading text messages. However, when I try to upload a bigger file, like an image, I can't get it to complete even across a number of passes. I've been trying to upload a 20 kB jpeg, but the most I can get uploaded is around 18%. Some passes it doesn't start to upload anything, even though I'm capturing other data coming down and it acknowledges my callsign on the system. After a few unsuccessful passes, it starts to upload again from 0%.
I'm trying to figure out which part of the link is the problem. I switch from my TH-D72 to my TM-V710 so that the uplink is 50W, so maybe my downlink is not consistent enough to hold the connection? My UHF side is only 5 elements, so maybe not as much gain as others are using.
Does it restart the upload from scratch because of how the satellite software is written or is it something with the ground station software?
Any advice would be appreciated.
-Stephen N8URE
Stephen,
For an upload the spacecraft remembers how far you got through the upload process. It stores the file offset for the last byte that it received. When you login and request to upload of the same file on the next pass it tells you the offset number to start from. The ground station software should then begin uploading from that point. So in theory it should complete over several passes as needed.
One common issue is having too much uplink power so that you can't receive while uplinking. The full duplex nature of the channel means that you need to be able to receive responses from the spacecraft when your receiver might be desensitized. So make sure either your antennae are isolated enough or you are not using too much power. 10 -25 watts should be sufficient into a yagi.
But tell us a bit more about the setup you are using, Which software, tnc, radio, antenna and we can try to help.

Chris lays it out well! My first thoughts:
1-transmitter desensing receiver Turn down the power, use filters to clean up, separate antennas 2-software issue. If using PSGS, get the latest version! 3-here's a little trick. I find uplinking better at 145.841 MHz

Thanks guys. I'll try going to medium power (10W).
I'm using the latest software, Kenwood TM-D710 connected via USB to a Linux laptop, and a homemade arrow with 4 ele VHF and 5 ele UHF. I think 5 kHz steps are the smallest it has, so I can't fine tune the doppler that much.
-Stephen N8URE
I have the same problem however using a D72A and Elk antenna. Will try the suggestion for diff uplink freq that Mark suggested

I had also noticed that when I switched to the D710 from the D72, even the downloading wasn't working as well. On the last pass, I lowered power to 10 W and that seemed to improve it, so I do think de-sense was part of the problem.
Now we'll see if it continues my upload tomorrow, or if it gives it a new file number again.

Hi Mark,
Trying to upload a 19kB image today, after checking well all the settings per your mail below, last pass was a few minutes ago and 19.4% uploaded. Leaving the station on automatic and see how it goes through.
Actually to note that I was putting too much power out previously and this morning (after reducing it) I got your message (20/03/2021) through the bird, also from others (thank you guys), text is working fine, great. Wish to experiment with the images as it is a great way for motivating students to satellites, space and engineering.
Send also a text message today which was uploaded successfully.
Thanks and I will continue to experiment on the images.

It looks like if it doesn't complete the upload in a certain amount of time or passes, the file gets lost. This must be a housekeeping function on the satellite side. For example, today I get:
Open ABCD: Ready to upload file: N8URE18.jpg.out B: 715788744. U>> From:PFS3-12 to N8URE Ctrl: 63 Type: UA Res PF: 0 NR: 0 NS: 0 I>> SUCCESSFUL LOGIN to PFS3-12 by N8URE I>> UL ERROR 4: ER_NO_SUCH_FILE_NUMBER Bad File Number, will ask Pacsat for a new number on next attempt: /home/scalar/Falconsat_data/FalconSat-3/N8URE18.jpg.out Open ABCD: Ready to upload file: N8URE18.jpg.out B: 715788744.
It got to the "Ready to upload" point a number of times on the pass, but then wouldn't get past that stage. For example
Ready to upload file: N8URE18.jpg.out B: 715789771. PB: Empty..
and then it moves on to something else. There were a lot of stations on the pass, which I'm sure didn't help.

Hi Jean Marc,
I don't know how long it took to download the file since the station is automated and I have PSGS set to download every file from the satellite :) I usually get all new files in about 5 mins worth of a pass, easy to keep up. It's quick, especially when all users have good operational stations and keep the queue moving along.
I find, and think most will as well, downloading to happen much faster than uploading.

Stephen,
You are right. A partial upload will be deleted after a few days. Probably something like 3 days, I can't recall.
Keep at it. Maybe drop the file size of your upload attempt and see what you can do on a single pass, and try more as you optimize?
It's all about signal to noise...the good news is that FS-3 has a great receiver, so it doesn't take a whole lot of uplink gain. Adjusting for Doppler on both uplink and downlink is important, as is deviation of the uplinked signal. Try lowering the audio level until it's just audible. On a receiver, it should sound like "half" of just an open squelch, rule of thumb/ear!

Tacking onto the conversation. Are you suggesting to add at least some squelch? I usually have it wide open with the D72A. Uplink I usually leave fixed and adjust for Doppler based on the rudimentary RX meter within the D72A.
Another question, I see CON flash on the D72A. Do we always need to be logged onto the PBBS or is log on/off normal? It’s hard to keep a CON especially for a non fixed portable station. Not sure how the PBBS treats this connection and the CON is only for uploading ?

Stephen,
You are right.

It looks like if it doesn't complete the upload in a certain amount of time or passes, the file gets lost. This must be a housekeeping function on the satellite side. For example, today I get:

Hello Brian, sorry to mislead with my remarks. When receiving FS-3, keep the squelch open. I was giving some advice on how to use another local receiver to listen to your own uplink audio, with some rules of thumb when deviation of the uplink signal can't be measured. So i was speaking about listening to one's own uplink with a second radio (HT for example) with open squelch, to say that an audio level at 9600 bps on FM usually is about "half as loud" as an open channel when it's close enough to work.
When you are trying to copy the bird, keep the squelch open. Now, as for the CON light, i don't know what that is actually showing you on the D72, since I don't own one. Is it DCD? If so, then yes, you need to try to keep the LED lit.
Some of us that make it look easy on Falconsat-3 have pretty decent fixed stations, with full computer control of antennas (both transmit and receive) and radio Doppler correction of both uplink and downlink (SatPC32 to the rescue!); have mast mounted preamps, and have worked through the desense issues so we have pretty good throughput.
I download every single file from the PBBS on FS-3. It's easy to keep up with the current station. M2 Leo-Pack, G5500/LVB tracker, good low noise preamp, bandpass filter on 2M to reduce desense on uplink, using TS-2000X, Paccom TNC, PacSat Ground Station software. This station is at the university where I work; it's on the penthouse of a 4 story science building. So it can print packets down to 1 deg elevation. It's a strong signal--relatively speaking!
Keep at it ;)
