I new member to our club who holds a tech license asked me if I knew,if any of the Baofeng HTs were capable of satellite operation. I know this has been discussed to death and I think the answer is no, but I don’t want to mislead him.

Many have used a CCR (Cheap Chinese Radio) on FM satellites. Personally I have used a Btech on transmit for quite a while, and another radio on receive.

Yes you can use Baofeng HT for satellites. I personally use Baofeng UV82, Ksun H2 and Fastcom UV88 with Arrow antenna to talk thru IO-86 and AO-91.

Hi Rick,
I think the key question here is “what is the actual question?” – if the club member is asking whether he can use a single Baofeng handheld in full duplex mode, the answer is almost certainly no, but if he’s asking if Baofeng handhelds can be used to work a satellite, the answer is inevitably “if you grab two of them and run one on each band, you can work the FM satellites fairly easily”. They aren’t going to be the cleanest of transmitters, and their receive may not be the most sensitive, but when you can pick up two of them for $30 or so, they’re a cheap way of getting yourself started.
So it’s worth clarifying the question – are we talking about a single FDX handheld, or a pair of them in standard HDX?

I have done this numerous times. Here's a little more information to pass on.
I've done it with a single UV-5R and an Arrow antenna. The downside of this is that you can only operate half-duplex. The problem with that is that you often transmit on top of other operators trying to make a contact and you earn, at best, a bad reputation. The FM birds are full enough. If you really want to try it this way then please do it very early in the morning or very late at night when the birds have less people.
The best way to proceed is with two radios. I have done it with two UV-5Rs - one for transmit and one for receive. This way you can operate full-duplex and not walk on top of other operators.

My only comment even with two of those radios is you will probably get desense on the VHF up UHF down birds like SO 50 and AO 27. AO-91 and P0101 may work the best in that configuration because of UHF up and VHF down. Just do not use 91 on it’s after midnight overnight passes to save its batteries. 101 is also on an erratic schedule so it’s not always available.
The drawback with those radios also is some have a better front end receive than others. So a good antenna like an arrow with its dual separate feeds is helpful. For the VHF up feeds, you might consider using the duplexer that the aero has specifically to go on the VHF radio output to antenna feed only to help get rid of some of the third harmonic interference that those radios will put out. That can assist with clearing up the UHF downlink.

When I added a MFJ-916B to my setup it helped SO much. I have since moved to the Mini-circuits BLP-200+, as it is so much lighter.

I have two I got at hamvention some years back for like $25 each and they were barely sensitive enough to hear the ISS. Like, I could only hear the ISS (probably at 50 watts) at TCA. So some of them are unusable, but I have not heard any other reports of insensitivity like what I experienced.
On the plus side, if you only use one you can program crossband memories, unlike most (all?) Japanese radios.

David,
Fully agree, we have an expert here in 3B8 (Francois 3B8GZ) who used 2 UV-5R to do many QSO's through AO-85, AO-91, AO92 and SO-50 with and home brew arrow type of antenna. he got so good (pointing) at it that most would realize that he was portable. It works really great for FM birds with a setup which cost less than $100.
Also here there is not much traffic so one can experiment a lot without doing QRM to others.
Just for info.

Adding to the other replies, I recommend doing a web search for posts by WD9EWK, he has reviewed a number of these radios and identified models that may be less susceptible to desense on V/U satellites. Agree that best approach is better receiver on downlink band and the Baofeng for TX. The FM birds can get VERY busy, so ability to monitor the downlink all the time is essential.
Good luck!
