According to a revised schedule, U.S. astronaut Michael Lopez-Alegria and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin of the Expedition 14 crew, who began working on the world's sole orbital station September 20, will return to Earth in April instead of March. They will be joined by the fifth space tourist on their return trip, Hungarian-born American software billionaire Charles Simonyi, who is expected to arrive at the ISS with the 15th crew. The flooding makes it "extremely hard to find a dry place for a capsule with astronauts to land on, and landing on a flooded steppe may be quite dangerous," he said. European Space Agency astronaut Thomas Reiter of Germany, who has been on board the station since July, will work as part of the Expedition 14 crew until December and will then hand off to astronaut Sunita Williams.

FUTURE LIFE SUPPORT FOR ISS

SUBMITTED BY ARTHUR N1ORC - AMSAT A/C #31468 Sci-fi Life Support 10.30.2006 Oct. 30, 2006: In Frank Herbert's epic ecological novel Dune (1965), set on the fictitious desert planet Arrakis in another star system, water is so precious that even perspiration and breath moisture are captured and purified for drinking. On real-life voyages to the Moon and Mars, science fact may end up imitating science fiction. Indeed, scientists and engineers at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) are putting the finishing touches on systems for capturing exhaled carbon dioxide and urine and turning them into breathable oxygen and drinking water. "Early space missions—Mercury, Gemini, Apollo—took with them all the water and oxygen they needed and discarded liquid and gaseous wastes into space," explains Robert Bagdigian of the MSFC. In short, the astronauts' life-support systems were "open-loop"—meaning they relied on resupply from Earth, something still true for the International Space Station, today. But for any long-duration missions to the Moon or Mars, "it makes sense to close the loop"—that is, to recycle air and waste water instead of just discarding them. Soon the ISS will be testing just such a regenerative system. Sign up for EXPRESS SCIENCE NEWS delivery The name of the project is Environmental Control and Life Support Systems--better known by its acronym ECLSS (pronounced"EE-cliss"). Bagdigian is the ECLSS project manager. "The Russians are ahead of us," says Robyn Carrasquillo, engineering manager for ECLSS. "The original Salyut and Mir spacecraft were able to condense humidity right out of the air and use electrolysis—an electric current run through the water—to produce oxygen for breathing." NASA's new regenerative ECLSS, to be launched to ISS in 2008, goes further: "it can recover urine in addition to humidity." Urine recovery is an engineering challenge: "Urine is so much dirtier than ordinary humidity," Carrasquillo explains. "It can corrode hardware and clog hoses." ECLSS uses a purification process called vapor compression distillation: urine is boiled until the water in it turns to steam. The steam—essentially clean water vapor except for some traces of ammonia and other gases—rises into a distillation chamber, leaving behind a concentrated brown soup of impurities and salts that Carrasquillo charitably calls "brine" (which is discarded). The steam is cooled and condenses back into liquid. This steam distillate is then mixed with the humidity condensate, and the water further purified to become potable. ECLSS can recover 100 percent of moisture in the air, and 85 percent of the water in urine, resulting in a net overall recovery efficiency of about 93 percent. Stepping-stone to the stars. Regenerative ECLSS will get a field test onboard the ISS That's how it works on Earth. In space, there's an additional challenge: "steam doesn't rise." Buoyancy requires gravity, and in the microgravity of a spaceship, steam just "sits there." It doesn't rise naturally into the distillation chamber. So in the version of ECLSS being completed at Marshall for ISS, "we spin the entire distillation system to create artificial gravity to separate the steam from the brine," says Carrasquillo. Moreover, in microgravity human hairs, skin cells, lint, and other impurities float around in the air instead of falling to the floor. Thus, the processor requires an impressive filtration system. When clean water emerges at the end, iodine is added to retard the growth of microbes (chlorine, used to purify water on Earth, is too reactive and hazardous to store and handle in space). ECLSS hardwareThe regenerative water recovery system for ISS, weighing about a ton and a half, will "produce half a gallon an hour, more than the current of crew three needs," Carrasquillo says. "This will enable the space station to support a total of six astronauts continuously." The system is designed to produce potable water "meeting purity standards better than most municipal water systems on the ground," Bagdigian adds. In addition to providing drinking water for the crew, the water recovery system will supply water to the other half of ECLSS: the oxygen generation system (OGS). The OGS operates by electrolysis. It splits water molecules into oxygen for breathing and hydrogen, which is vented outside the spacecraft. "The air loop needs pretty clean water, so the electrolyte cells don't get contaminated and foul," Bagdigian points out. "Regeneration is far more cost-effective than resupplying the station with water from Earth," Carrasquillo says, especially after the space shuttle is retired in 2010. Recycling up to 93 percent wastewater is impressive. But for missions of months or years to the Moon or Mars, some later version of ECLSS must achieve closer to 100 percent efficiency. Then, astronauts would be ready to survive on our own solar system's versions of Dune. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ECLSS in Iraq--Since April 2006, an Earth-bound application of a portion of the ECLSS water recovery system has been being trucked from one rural village to another in northern Iraq to filter particulates and contaminants out of dirty groundwater or well water to provide residents with clean drinking water. That portable system—about half the size of a refrigerator including all its pumps and computer controls—purifies water at a good clip of 4 gallons a minute, for a cost of only about two cents a gallon. After several hours of checking that the cargo ship was securely docked to the station, mission control gave the go-ahead for the crew to begin unloading fuel, food and water from the cargo ship, which blasted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan earlier this week. The move was only possible after it was determined the unmanned Russian spacecraft had properly latched onto the orbiting outpost. During an initial docking attempt Thursday, the supply craft failed to latch completely. Russian Space Agency official Nikolai Sevasteenov says the concerns stemmed from Mission Control's inability to determine whether the cargo ship's antenna had folded properly, as is required for a secure docking. With the trouble solved, the three-man crew of the International Space Station was happy to open the hatches and begin unloading. Russian space agency officials stress similar problems have been encountered before. They say, at no time was the crew in any danger. Friday's delivery means the crew can look forward to enjoying videos and letters from home. American astronaut Michael Lopez-Alegria, Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin, and German astronaut Thomas Reiter have logged a little over a month in space as part of a six-month tour to the International Space Station.

SUBMITTED BY ARTHUR N1ORC - AMSAT A/C #31468 *International Space Station Status Report #06-47* *4:30 p.m. CDT, Thursday, Oct. 26, 2006* *Expedition 13 Crew* New supplies arrived at the International Space Station Thursday as an unpiloted Russian cargo spacecraft docked to the aft port of the Zvezda Service Module. With almost 2.5 tons of food, fuel and supplies for the station's Expedition 14 crew, the ISS Progress 23 automatically docked to Zvezda at 9:29 a.m. CDT as the spacecraft and the station flew 220 miles above Italy. The 23rd Progress to visit the station was launched Monday from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Following the initial docking, the final latching of the Progress craft to the station was delayed by about three and a half hours as Russian flight controllers evaluated potential interference by an antenna on the spacecraft. At the time of docking, flight controllers could not confirm that the antenna used by the Progress' Kurs automated docking system had retracted as commanded. If the antenna had remained extended, it could have interfered with the final latching of the supply ship to the station. After reviewing data, Mission Control Moscow commanded the Progress' docking probe to slowly retract, pulling the ship firmly into the port and aligning the hooks and latches that hold it secure. Latches for the craft on the station were secured at about 1 p.m. CDT. Flight controllers will command additional latches on the Progress to close Friday. This allows the operation to be completed in a normal manner over Russian communications sites. During the hours between initial docking and final latching, the station's orientation was allowed to drift to avoid any disturbance of the softly docked cargo ship. The station's drift resulted in lower power generation by the solar arrays. The crew then powered off several pieces of non-critical equipment as outlined in a standard procedure that reduces power consumption. Soon after the latches were closed, however, the station's attitude control was restored and power generation was returned to normal. Due to the long operations Thursday, Expedition 14 Commander Mike Lopez-Alegria and flight engineers Mikhail Tyurin and Thomas Reiter will open the hatch to the supply ship on Friday. Supplies on the Progress include food, fuel, oxygen and air, clothing, experiment hardware and spare parts, as well as personal items from the crew's families. The new Progress joins an older Progress supply ship that arrived at the station’s Pirs Docking Compartment in June. Progress 22 will remain docked until mid-January. It will be used to stow trash, and its supply of oxygen will help replenish the station’s atmosphere when required. ISS Progress 23 holds 1,918 pounds of propellant for the Russian thrusters, 110 pounds of oxygen and almost 2,800 pounds of spare parts, experiment hardware and life support components, including parts for the Russian Elektron oxygen-generation system. The system has been inoperable since last month, and Tyurin is expected to resume repairs on the unit next week. Engineers continue to review data from the station’s S-band communications system, which experienced dropouts late last week in the transmission link of one of two redundant channels used for voice and commanding capability. After collecting data last weekend from “string 1” of the S-band system, its transmitter was reactivated Wednesday, but the communications problem occurred once again. “String 2” of the system is being used for voice and commanding with no impact to station activities. Flight controllers are analyzing the problem to determine if any procedural adjustments must be made for the upcoming flight of Discovery to the station on the STS-116 mission. In other activities, the crew conducted sound level measurements in the station’s modules and installed cables in the Russian segment of the station. They performed regular station maintenance and took time to chat with a reporter from the Orange County Register in California on Tuesday. Reiter continued his work with European plant growth experiments while throughout the week Lopez-Alegria did log entries for a sleep experiment. In two weeks, the crew will begin preparations for a spacewalk Nov. 22 by Tyurin and Lopez-Alegria in Russian Orlan suits from the Pirs Docking Compartment to replace and retrieve several science experiments from the hull of the Zvezda Service Module. Tyurin also plans to hit a golf ball from a bracket on Pirs as part of a Russian commercial activity. The next station status report will be issued Nov. 3 or earlier if events warrant. Expedition 14 Commander Michael Lopez-Alegria and Flight Engineer Mikhail Tyurin practiced using the manual docking system for the Russian Progress cargo ship. They rehearsed rendezvous, flyaround maneuvers and approach and docking with an on-board simulator. During the training, technicians at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan completed preparations for the launch of a Progress cargo craft on Monday at 8:40 a.m. CDT. It is scheduled to dock to the complex Thursday at 9:28 a.m. Live coverage on NASA Television will begin at 9 a.m. The Progress, which will make its way to the launch pad Saturday, is filled with more than two tons of food, fuel and supplies for the station and its crew. Also aboard are new spare parts for the Russian Elektron oxygen-generation system, which has been shut down since last month. Earlier Friday, Lopez-Alegria replaced equipment in the Carbon Dioxide Removal System, used to remove impurities from the station's atmosphere. Only one of its two systems designed to purge carbon dioxide from the air has been operating due to particulate matter clogging an air valve. Lopez-Alegria installed a new air flow regulator valve and a filter to recover the use of the second of two adsorbent beds in the device. He also joined Tyurin to inspect and photograph the Zvezda Service Module windows and conducted a video tour of the station for training of future Expedition crews. Lopez-Alegria, who also serves as the NASA science officer, collected his second set of blood and urine samples for the Nutrition Experiment. This is NASA's most comprehensive in-flight study of human physiological changes during long-duration spaceflight. The experiment measures bone metabolism, oxidative damage, nutritional assessments and hormonal changes. It also will help to define nutritional requirements and develop food systems for future missions to the moon and Mars. Lopez-Alegria and Tyurin also completed a medical officer proficiency training session. European Space Agency Flight Engineer Thomas Reiter began the first of three runs of the Analysis of a Novel Sensory Mechanism in Root Phototropism, or TROPI experiment, in the European Modular Cultivation System. Seeds will sprout next week in the EMCS facility where plants and other small organisms can grow in variable gravity conditions using a centrifuge. By sprouting seeds under different levels of partial gravity and different frequencies of light, this study will increase the understanding of the different systems plants use to determine what direction their roots and shoots should grow and which genes are responsible for successful plant growth. NASA’s payload operations team at the Marshall Space Flight Center coordinates U.S. science activities on space station. Other science work this week included sessions of the Profilaktika and Urolux Russian experiments. The station remains under the control of three gyroscopes after one was shut down more than a week ago. On Monday, flight controllers conducted a test of Control Moment Gyro 3, which was turned off due to excessive vibrations. Monday’s test, looking at the health of the accelerometer, spun the CMG up to 500 rpm and then let it coast down to zero while acceleration data were taken with the MAMS (Microgravity Acceleration Measurement System) to correlate and compare with data from the internal CMG accelerometer. An initial review indicated no unusual vibrations, but engineers continue to analyze the results. On Monday, flight controllers will begin a five-day checkout of the Thermal Radiator Rotary Joints (TRRJ) on the S1 and P1 trusses that will rotate once the station’s upgraded external thermal loops are activated on the STS-116 mission. The TRRJ test will enable the radiators to “autotrack" or revolve when required to dissipate heat from the trusses’ avionics equipment. The next status report will be issued on Monday, Oct. 23, following the launch of ISS Progress 23, or earlier if events warrant. Photo credit: NASA ***http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/main/index.html On Wednesday the crew conducted a test of the Space Video Gateway to be used in November for the first HDTV interactive downlinks with the Discovery Channel and NHK (Nippon Hoso Kyokai). The hardware was provided by NASA and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency for temporary installation on the space station. Launch of the ISS Progress 23 cargo craft is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 23, at 9:41 a.m. EDT and docking on Thursday, Oct. 26, at 10:28 a.m. EDT. The cargo consists of propellants, oxygen, food, crew provisions and maintenance gear. Water will not be delivered this time. High-priority items include Elektron parts, research payloads and EVA equipment. One of the station's four Control Moment Gyroscopes (CMGs) used to maintain the station's orientation in space was shut down last week after exceeding the allowed vibration limit. Engineers tested the problematic CMG Monday to gather performance data and conduct diagnostic checks. An initial review of the available data indicated no vibration events. Engineers continue analyzing the data to determine troubleshooting plans.

The test is a routine part of astronaut training and launch preparations, and allows astronauts to get hands-on with the equipment and flight hardware that will be used during the mission. During the STS-116 mission, Discovery will deliver the P5 integrated truss structure to the International Space Station, and carry the SPACEHAB module and other key components. Discovery is slated to roll over to the Vehicle Assembly Building on Nov. 1 for mating with the external tank and solid rocket boosters. Launch is scheduled for no earlier than Dec. 7.

SUBMITTED BY ARTHUR N1ORC AMSAT AC #31468 \ International Space Station Status Report #06-44 3 p.m. CDT Friday, October 13, 2006 Expedition 13 Crew The International Space Station’s Expedition 14 crew went for a short ride this week, performed maintenance and experiments aboard the growing outpost and celebrated one crew member's 100th day in space. Station Commander and NASA Science Officer Mike Lopez-Alegria, along with flight engineers Mikhail Tyurin and Thomas Reiter, boarded their Soyuz spacecraft and flew it from one docking port to another on Tuesday. The relocation was a routine procedure conducted ahead of the launch and arrival of the next Progress supply ship scheduled late this month. With Tyurin at the controls, the Soyuz undocked from the aft position of the Zvezda module at 2:14 p.m. CDT and docked to the Zarya control module’s Earth-facing docking port at 2:34 p.m. The 23rd Progress vehicle will launch Oct. 23 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. It will dock to the vacated Zvezda port three days later, delivering supplies to the crew. More than three weeks into a six-month stay, Lopez-Alegria and Tyurin are settling in to the routine of life in microgravity. They joined Reiter in celebrating his 100th day in space since his launch aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery in early July. Reiter, a European Space Agency astronaut, will return home aboard Discovery when it returns in December and brings NASA astronaut Suni Williams as his replacement. Oxygen is being supplied in the station cabin by tanks on the outside of the U.S. Quest Airlock while an onboard Russian oxygen generation system, called the Elektron, is not working. Additional parts to repair the Elektron are expected to be among the supplies arriving late this month on Progress. The station’s orientation is being managed by three of the four electrically-driven Control Moment Gyroscopes (CMGs). One gyroscope, designated CMG 3, was shut down after exhibiting intermittently high vibrations early on Monday. Three gyros are sufficient, and there has been no impact to the safety or operation of the station due to the shut down of CMG 3. Flight controllers are evaluating future plans for CMG 3 and any changes that might be needed to assembly operations during the next shuttle mission, STS-116, as a result. During that mission, set for December, alternating systems on the station will be powered off as the complex is rewired to bring on line new supplies of electricity from the recently added solar arrays. Steering jets could be used to control the station's orientation if needed as gyroscopes are powered down during those procedures. This week the crew performed routine medical checks and took water samples while loading the docked Progress vehicle with unneeded items. Lopez-Alegria swapped a water separator in the Quest Airlock’s Common Cabin Air Assembly to ensure a filter doesn’t become clogged. The maintenance procedure was previously performed by the Expedition 5 crew. Also this week, equipment setup began for the Space Video Gateway checkout, which will demonstrate the station’s ability to transmit television in high definition. But if you ask the astronauts and engineers which of the final 14 assembly flights may be the most complex, many would point to Discovery's next mission, set to launch in December. Image credit: NASA Since it went into orbit in 1998, the space station has been running on a temporary electrical system. Lead Space Station Flight Director John Curry compared it to the way you might build a house on the ground – until your electricity is hooked up, you probably plug your saws into a generator. That's basically what the astronauts building and living on the station have been doing for the past eight years. But with the installation of two new electricity-generating solar array panels in September, all the pieces are now in place to switch to the permanent system. At your house, it would just be a matter of unplugging the saw from the generator and plugging it back into the wall. But in space, it's not that easy. "Everything will be fine – if nothing breaks," Curry said. The plan is to send astronauts out on two spacewalks, each devoted to rewiring half of the station. Though it sounds complicated, that part shouldn't be too difficult. Spacewalks are inherently dangerous and should only be done if there is no alternative, Polansky said, but as spacewalks go, these are pretty straightforward. The astronauts will head outside, wait for the team on the ground to send commands to switch off the power, and then unplug the power cables and plug them in new places. There might be the occasional stiff cable to deal with – that can happen in the minus 200 degrees Fahrenheit of space – and the process will likely be slow, but not especially complex. The real pressure, Polansky said, will be on those back in Houston. "I hold my breath every time we do spacewalks because you never know what can happen," he said. "So I'll definitely be watching. But I don't think I'll be as worried as the guys in Mission Control and the folks who have been working on the hardware will be. I think I'll have a lot of company in the worry department." Curry confirmed that suspicion. He's been training for this mission for six years, and he said his team couldn't be any more prepared. But when asked what about the mission keeps him awake at night, he had no trouble coming up with a list. "My team is the one that has to turn everything back on and get it running," he said. Several of them have to do with the unpredictability of equipment that's been in space for years. For instance, before any of the rewiring can be done, half of the solar array that's been providing the temporary electricity must be folded up to make room for the new solar arrays to rotate. That's never been tried before, and it may not be as easy as it sounds. "It's been sitting out there taking thermal cycles (moving from minus 200 degrees Fahrenheit to plus 200 degrees Fahrenheit every 45 minutes) since November 2000," Curry said. "It's like a map – if you keep a map out in your car for six years and then you decide to fold it up again, you may get some waves in it or it may not fold back the same way at all." Many of the main components of the electrical system have been flying that long and could cause similar large headaches. It's impossible to know for sure if the equipment will work until the power has been turned off, rewired and turned back on. And if it doesn't work, the astronauts can't leave it like that – the essential systems on the station would be running on whichever half of the station has power, but without both halves they won't have any backup. That's not a position anyone wants to leave the station in for any longer than necessary. So, if Mission Control flips the switch and the lights don't all come on, the astronauts will have to try and fix whatever the problem is before they run out of time. If they can't, then it's back to square one. "Then I have to tell the crew, stop what you're doing and undo everything," Curry said. To avoid that, plans addressing possible problems are made well in advance. "You put all your energy into being successful and doing it safely, while making sure you do it efficiently," Lead Shuttle Flight Director Tony Ceccacci said. "And then you step back after you get that completed and say, ‘What if?'" You look at the most probable failure, impact to mission, complexity of recovering, then determine if you should spend the resources to develop the fix. If the old solar array won't fold up, the astronauts won't be able to do any of their rewiring spacewalks until they either fold it up manually or jettison it. If the pump that keeps the electrical system cool doesn't work, there would only be enough time to rewire half of the station after replacing it. But he believes NASA is up to the challenge. "Everyone has stepped up, is prepared, and is confident that this mission will be very successful," Ceccacci said. "As with all complex assembly flights, it's going to be interesting."

As NASA embarks on a series of space flights as complex as any in history to complete assembly of the station, station operations facilities needed an upgrade. The previous station control room, designated the Blue Flight Control Room, had been in operation since the first station component was launched in 1998. The newly remodeled facility is just down the hall at NASA's Johnson Space Center, Houston. Known as Flight Control Room 1, it was first used to control a space flight 38 years ago today, the mission of Apollo 7 launched Oct. 11, 1968. It was one of two original control rooms for NASA's manned missions. Among historic flights the room controlled during its previous use were missions to America's first space station, Skylab, in the 1970s, and the first space shuttle mission, STS-1, in April 1981. Fittingly, the last full flight controlled from the room was the first time a shuttle visited a space station, the STS-71 mission to the Russian Mir station in June 1995. Following that, shuttle flight control transitioned to a new room, and the last service in FCR-1 was control of the ascent to orbit only of space shuttle mission STS-76 in March 1996. Since then, the room has been a science center. After nine months of remodeling, including changes to existing hardware to minimize expenses, the station team moved in on Oct. 6. They now staff the room around the clock and will continue to do so throughout the life of the station. The relocation was coordinated by Lead Station Flight Director John McCullough. A team of employees from across Johnson completed the renovations and systems testing on a tight schedule with no interruption of critical station operations. Today, that team gathered in FCR-1 for a ribbon cutting to commemorate the project's completion. At the ceremony, the team was joined by Johnson Director Mike Coats, Mission Operations Director Allen Flynt and Mission Operations Deputy Director Milt Heflin. Former Johnson Director and Project Mercury Flight Director Christopher Kraft, who is credited with developing NASA's original concepts of human space flight control, was a special guest. The old room had about 16 consoles for flight control disciplines, such as space station electrical and environmental systems. Several disciplines had to share consoles depending on station activities under way. "When we were doing complex operations, such as spacewalks, launches or rendezvous and dockings, we had to relocate to the larger shuttle flight control room or use back rooms," said McCullough. "In that configuration the team didn't have the best possible situational awareness of what was going on." The new room has 20 consoles and more space for safety and comfort. Its existing consoles and individual monitors were updated. Where the old room had only two front screens, the new facility has three large front screens to display information for the entire team and mounted high definition television cameras. To ensure a smooth transition, the station team has had temporary quarters in the Shuttle Flight Control Room since the last shuttle mission was completed in September. The temporary quarters allowed equipment to be moved and full check out of the new facility without interference to ongoing station expeditions. The walls of the new room reflect its long history, with 61 mission plaques displayed from flights supported there. New plaques will be added now for each mission the station team supports as the room again makes history. "I like to hearken back to the Apollo operations and think that the ghosts from that time are still in the room," said Chief Flight Director Phil Engelauf of the new station flight control room. "The symbolism is not lost on the new generation of flight controllers working there." The first new plaque to be added will be for shuttle mission STS-116, targeted to launch in December. EXP 14 Crew Relocates Soyuz Spacecraft

With Soyuz Commander Tyurin at the controls, they undocked from the Zvezda port at 3:14 p.m. EDT and redocked to the Earth-facing Zarya module port at 3:34 p.m. This relocation frees the Zvezda's docking port for the arrival of a new Russian Progress cargo spacecraft later this month. One of the station's four Control Moment Gyroscopes (CMGs) used to maintain the station’s orientation in space was shut down early Tuesday after exceeding the allowed vibration limit. Only three CMGs are needed to properly maintain the station's orientation. Ground controllers will monitor the CMG and perform additional diagnostic testing.

SUBMITTED BY ARTHUR N1ORC - AMSAT AC #31468 Smoking Out Space Fires: NASA Study Helps Prevent Fires in Space If you've ever burned your dinner, you know how startling a smoke alarm can be. Now, imagine you're 220 miles away from Earth in an orbiting lab when the alarm sounds. Fires are no laughing matter on Earth, but in space they could be even more devastating. "If a chair is on fire in your home, you have time to get out. In a spacecraft, you don't," said NASA scientist Dr. David Urban. "You have to detect smoke in an early pre-fire state, so you can stop it before it starts." This may not sound like a major challenge. After all, household smoke detectors are mass produced and inexpensive. But detecting smoke in space isn't quite so simple. Smoke detectors work by looking for particles in the air that are about the same size as the particles normally found in smoke. However, a 1996 NASA Glenn study showed that smoke particles in space are bigger than those on Earth. "Smoke particles form differently in microgravity than they do on the ground," said William Sheredy, project manager for the Smoke Aerosol Measurement Experiment (SAME). "When smoke is created in microgravity, the particles have more time to gather together, producing larger particles or particle chains than in normal gravity." So far, nobody knows exactly how big those particles are. That's why the NASA Glenn team created SAME. This space station experiment will burn samples of materials normally found in space -- like Teflon, silicon, cellulose and Kapton -- and then measure the size of the particles in the smoke. Engineers will use this information to design the next generation of spacecraft smoke detectors. As NASA often does, the team used several commercial parts to build the experiment. One of those parts, the P-Trak, was made by Minnesota company TSI. Designed to measure air quality, this small handheld device is capable of counting individual smoke particles. It's also the perfect size and weight for a space station experiment. There's just one catch: It wasn't designed for space. P-Trak works by passing air through a heated chamber of vaporous alcohol. When the air is cooled, the alcohol condenses around dust particles much like water condenses on a cold glass. This makes the particles large enough that an optical sensor can detect them as they scatter light from a laser beam. "We were concerned because gravity assists in the circulation of the alcohol inside the device," Sheredy said. "We weren't sure it would work properly in the absence of gravity." So the scientists modified the device by carving tiny grooves inside its chambers to improve the flow of alcohol in microgravity. Of course, the scientific method requires every theory to be tested, and this experiment was no exception. Before they could use the device in SAME, the team had to be sure the modification would work. To do so, they created another space station experiment called the Dust and Aerosol Measurement Feasibility Test (DAFT), to test the modified P-Trak. In September, astronaut and Expedition 13 Flight Engineer Jeff Williams operated DAFT on the station. Urban, Sheredy and other DAFT team members watched in real time as Williams called in the recordings to Payload Communications. The results showed that the commercial particle counter works in space. "It was really exciting. For people who work on projects like we do, days like this are highlights in our careers," said Sheredy. "From beginning to end, DAFT took about 3.5 years, and it all came down to about six hours of operation." Those crucial six hours brought the team one step closer to understanding the nature of space smoke and improving NASA's detectors. They look forward to another career highlight next summer when their primary experiment, SAME, is scheduled to travel to the station aboard the space shuttle. SUBMITTED BY ARTHUR N1ORC - AMSAT AC #31468 *International Space Station Status Report #06-43* *3 p.m. CDT – Friday, Oct. 6, 2006* *Expedition 14 Crew* Expedition 14 completed its first full week solo on the International Space Station performing standard early mission checks and drills plus some equipment troubleshooting. Expedition 14 Commander Michael Lopez-Alegria and Flight Engineer Mikhail Tyurin have been aboard the station for 19 days, while Flight Engineer Thomas Reiter of the European Space Agency is in his third month in orbit. Along with other work, the crew members prepared this week for a short trip away from the station next week, when they will fly the Soyuz spacecraft from one docking port to another. Early in the week, the crew conducted a check of procedures required to exit the station in an emergency, ensuring all necessary equipment is in place. Throughout the week, time was set aside for Lopez-Alegria and Tyurin to familiarize themselves with the station and its operations. They started several new scientific activities and medical checks. Lopez-Alegria began his first session with the nutrition experiment. He collected blood and urine samples and began logging all of his food and drinks consumed. The experiment, which tracks many vitamins and minerals essential for good health, is the most comprehensive in-flight study to date of human physiological changes during long-duration spaceflight. The information will help define nutritional requirements and food systems for future missions to the moon and Mars. Lopez-Alegria also supported the Passive Observatories for Experimental Microbial Systems in Micro-G, or POEMS experiment, by storing the next set of samples into the Minus-Eighty Laboratory Freezer for ISS, or MELFI. MELFI is a cold storage unit that maintains experiment samples at temperatures of minus 80 degrees Celsius, minus 26 degrees Celsius or 4 degrees Celsius throughout a mission. POEMS will evaluate the effect of stress in the space environment on the generation of genetic variation in model microbial cells. NASA’s payload operations team at the Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, Ala., coordinates U.S. science activities on the station. On Friday, all crew members performed a normal periodic fitness evaluation, exercising on a stationary bicycle aboard the station and measuring heart rate and blood pressure. One new scientific investigation began with Reiter as part of his evaluation. An oxygen uptake monitor provided by the European Space Agency was used to measure Reiter's oxygen consumption, a key parameter that can be used to measure fitness. The fitness evaluations are conducted once a month. Lopez-Alegria and Tyurin also checked emergency medical equipment and supplies, a check done early in each crew's flight. Tyurin spent time mid-week continuing to troubleshoot the Russian Elektron oxygen-generation system. The system converts water into oxygen to replenish the cabin air. It has not been functional since it overheated just before Expedition 14 arrived. The crew replaced components in an Elektron control panel this week, but problems with its operation persisted. Russian engineers are evaluating the system and further repairs may wait until the next supply ship arrives with additional parts. The next Progress cargo craft is set to launch later this month. Plentiful oxygen supplies are available on the station. Oxygen is now being replenished in the cabin from tanks located on the Quest airlock. U.S. flight controllers are evaluating a vibration seen in one of the station's Control Moment Gyroscopes (CMGs) this week. The electrically powered CMGs maintain the station's orientation so that thrusters and limited fuel do not need to be used for that purpose. The vibrations were first observed Sept. 28 as a station maneuver was performed using thrusters. The gyroscope, CMG-3, was taken offline to allow additional testing. Since then, controllers have run various tests with CMG-3 to better characterize the intermittent vibrations, and engineers have determined it could be put back online and in normal operation, if needed. Only three CMGs are necessary to properly maintain the station's orientation. The station crew members will board the Soyuz spacecraft docked at the rear of the Zvezda living quarters module on Tuesday to prepare for the short move. NASA Television will cover the activity live beginning at 1:45 p.m. CDT(1845 UTC). With Soyuz Commander Tyurin at the controls, they will undock from the Zvezda port at 2:14 p.m. and redock to the Earth-facing Zarya module port at 2:39 p.m. CDT. Engineers at Hamilton Sundstrand keep astronauts comfortable by calibrating systems that test environmental controls in spacecraft and space suits. Temperatures are frigid where the sun doesn’t shine and burning hot where it does. Anything that generates heat has no air to cool it. Wanted: VIDEO astronaut McArthur at AMSAT Symposium!!

Hello All, Astronaut McArthur is invited for the Amsat symposium in San Fransisco. http://www.amsat.org/amsat-new/symposium/2006Keynote.php McArthur shall talk about his amateur radio adventures during his mission in the ISS Space Station. http://spaceflight1.nasa.gov/gallery/images/station/crew-12/inflight/ndxpag… McArthur worked 130 DXCC countries, and all states (WAS) of America. http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2006/06/01/103/?nc=1 Sadly I can not join the Amsat symposium. I wonder if there is someone who can record (good quality) VIDEO + AUDIO during McArthur his speech. After the Amsat symposium I hope someone can send me the video on a CDROM so I can also put the video on my website where everyone can download the video. Keep in mind: McArthur his mission was an unique event for thousands of hams all over the world!!! (keep something from the history saved for the future!!!). In the past we helped McArthur with our NA1SS DXCC campaign. We have encouraged many (also rare) DXCC countries and asked them (via e-mail) to trie McArthur NA1SS. It was a great success, after many hams have sended enthusiast e-mails and were proud of their contact with an astronaut in a Space Station, some hams came from rare DXCC countries (or continents) where noone ever have made a contact with a Space Station before.
