US Hams, don’t forget that there is a new process for US school proposals.
For US schools to have an ARISS contact, they must fill out a proposal,
submit it to NASA, and see if they are approved or not. Once a school is
approved and put on the list, an ARISS mentor will be assigned to assist the
school.
NASA will have two open windows a year for schools to submit a proposal.
The first window for contacts during the first half of 2012 has already
closed. Look for the second window for second half 2012 contacts later this
year. You must go through NASA to get the proposal material. Contact
Teaching From Space, a NASA Education office, at JSC-TFS-ARISS(a)mail.nasa.gov or
by calling them at (281) 244-2320.
The following US states and entities have never had an ARISS contact:
Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Kansas, Minnesota, North Dakota, Rhode Island,
South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, Wyoming, American Samoa, Guam,
Northern Marianas Islands, and the Virgin Islands.

Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report
April 30, 2012
1. Upcoming School Contact
The Mariners' Museum, Newport News, Virginia has been scheduled for an
Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on
Wednesday, May 2 at 16:14 UTC via telebridge station IK1SLD in Italy. The
ARISS contact is part of a comprehensive education plan which will pique
students' interest in STEM.
2. Calolziocorte, Italy Contact Successful
On Tuesday, April 24, students from Istituto Comprensivo di Calolziocorte -
Scuola Media in Calolziocorte, Italy spoke with Don Pettit, KD5MDT via an
Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact. Telebridge
station LU8YY in Argentina provided the radio connection. An audience of 200
students, visitors and media were present for the event and listened as
Pettit answered eighteen questions and exchanged greetings with the youth. A
presentation on ARISS and amateur radio was also given to the students. The
contact highlighted a curriculum covering astronautics, astronomy, radio
techniques and English.
3. New Proposal Cycle for ARISS-US Contacts
NASA Teaching From Space (TFS) office has announced a new proposal cycle for
ARISS-US contacts. Proposals may be submitted through July 2, 2012 for
contacts that will be scheduled in the November 1, 2012 - May 1, 2013
timeframe. Four informational sessions will be held to answer any questions
concerning the proposal process. To attend a session or to have questions
answered, contact TFS at JSC-TFS- ARISS(a)mail.nasa.gov or call 281-244-1919.
For more information, see the TFS Web site:
http://www.nasa.gov/audience/foreducators/teachingfromspace/students/ariss.h
tml
4. ARRL QST
In the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) May QST column titled "Up Front"
is a short article about the upcoming Dayton Hamvention. The article
features the highlight of last year -- where Doug Wheelock, KF5BOC,
participated in ARRL and AMSAT activities at Hamvention, in particular,
spending a lot of time with young people to interest them in technology and
Amateur Radio. There is a good-sized photo of Doug with a crowd of kids.
Please join us in listening to an International Space Station school
contact with participants at The Mariners Museum, Newport News,
Virginia, USA on 2 May. The event is scheduled to begin at
approximately 16:14 UTC.
The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds.
The contact will be a telebridge between OR4ISS and IK4SLD. The
contact should be audible over Europe and adjacent areas. Interested
parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The
contact is expected to be conducted in English.
The Mariners’ Museum is a non-profit museum with a mission to “educate,
engage, and inspire people around the globe to embrace the rich and diverse
maritime world.” We do this through exhibitions and programming including
lectures, in-house and outreach school classes, and educational programs
presented via Interactive videoconferencing. We are thrilled to connect
with the International Space Station as this connection continues the story
of exploration, carrying it from the sea to the stars. Our goal is for
students across the country to see that the exploration of mankind is
ongoing, and can be part of their story as well.
Audio from this contact will be available on the:
EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers
IRLP Node 9010 Discovery Reflector
On the web at: https://sites.google.com/site/arissaudio/
Audio on Echolink & Web Stream is generally transmitted around 20 minutes
prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the
preparation that occurs. IRLP will begin just prior to the ground station
call to the ISS.
Please note that on Echolink there are automatic breaks of 1.5 seconds in
the audio transmission. These occur every 2.5 minutes during the event.
Breaks on IRLP are manual and occur approximately after every third
question.
** Contact times are approximate. If the ISS executes a reboost or other
maneuver, the AOS (Acquisition Of Signal) time may alter by a few minutes

approved and put on the list, an ARISS mentor will be assigned to assist the

There have been rumors in the past indicating that the ISS was having
direct contacts on the 40 meter band. There is no HF radio equipment on
board
and available yet. The HF antenna is mounted. Sometimes WA3NAN will
retransmit shuttle audio.

The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and LU8YY. The contact should be audible over Argentina and portions of S. America. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English.
Comprehensive institute with three different levels: kindergarten, primary school and secondary school. Secondary School was founded in the 60s. About 600 students attend it, divided into four seats, with a total of 26 forms. Calolziocorte is a small town of about 15.000 citizens not far from Lecco, in the heart of a beautiful area called Val San Martino.
Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows:
1. What was the most exciting moment of your mission?
2. Is it stressful to stay for such a long time in the space station?
3. How can you distinguish between day and night?
4. What are your feelings when you are out in space during an EVA?
5. Has it been difficult to adapt to the weightlessness environment of the
ISS?
6. Which was the hardest challenge you faced in your career?
7. What do you do when you feel homesick?
8. How are differences of opinions dealt with during a mission?
9. How do you feel living in zero g?
10. What did you think when you entered the space station for the first time?
11. How are the astronauts selected?
12. How do you spend your free time in the space station?
13. How do you feel during the lift-off?
14. Do astronauts ever have stress attacks? How do they manage them?
15. What are your feelings seeing the earth from such a special perspective?
16. How would butterflies fly in zero g?
17. What does your daily routine look like onboard the ISS?
18. What are the physical requirements to become an astronaut?
19. What do you do if you get ill?
20. What are the best studies to become an astronaut?

Next planned event(s):
TBD
ARISS is an international educational outreach program partnering the participating space agencies, NASA, Russian Space Agency, ESA, CNES, JAXA, and CSA, with the AMSAT and IARU organizations from participating countries.
ARISS offers an opportunity for students to experience the excitement of Amateur Radio by talking directly with crewmembers on-board the International Space Station. Teachers, parents and communities see, first hand, how Amateur Radio and crewmembers on ISS can energize youngsters' interest in science, technology, and learning. Further information on the ARISS program is available on the website http://www.ariss.org/ (graciously hosted by the Radio Amateurs of Canada).
Thank you & 73,
