An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Guilford County Schools, Greensboro, NC on 02 May. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 14:52 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and W4GSO. The contact should be audible over portions of the eastern US and Canada. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English.
Ronald E. McNair Elementary is a K-5 public school located in Browns Summit, N.C. McNair Elementary is a part of Guilford County Schools, North Carolina's third largest school district, which serves more than 72,000 students. The school is in its first year and recently moved into a brand new facility. The 88,900 square-foot school building features sustainable materials, natural lighting in hallways, solar panels for water heating, light sensors, a light-colored roof to reduce heat gain, an integrated fresh-air system, sun shades for large windows and low-flow plumbing fixtures. All classrooms have access to outdoor learning environments. Vegetation has been planted to grow up green screens that will provide shade over outdoor patio areas. Additionally, the art and science labs are equipped with movable exterior wall systems, allowing the classrooms to literally open up to the outdoors when weather permits and facilitate an indoor/outdoor classroom space. Students attended their first day in the new school on Feb.4, 2013. The school is named for astronaut and physicist Dr. Ronald E. McNair, who received his bachelor's degree from nearby North Carolina A&T State University. He was one of seven crew members killed on the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1986. Currently, about 488 students are enrolled.
Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows:
1. Why do you wear a white suit and what is it made of?
2. How would you handle an emergency in space, like if someone gets really
sick or injured on board the space station?
3. How does the day being only 92 minutes affect living and working on ISS?
4. Do you think there is something in outer space that could cure diseases
and save lives?
5. Was there any class that you took in elementary or middle school that
influenced your decision to become an astronaut?
6. What are the sacrifices made to become an astronaut and do you ever have
any regrets or worries about the amazing adventures and time in space?
7. What is the most incredible thing you have seen while in space?
8. How has the experience of being in space and learning the science of
space helped you appreciate what it means to be human?
9 How did your family and friends feel about you going into space?
10. What are some of the experiments running on the International Space
Station and how are they related to society on Earth?
11. We used the Drake Equation to find the percentage of the chance of
intelligent alien life. Do you believe in alien life? If yes, why? If
no, why? How can we know for sure?
12. What dangers could you face living at the Space Station and what drills
or procedures are in place if something happens?
13. Does zero gravity affect the things you dream about and how long you
sleep? If yes, what ways is it different than sleeping on Earth?
14. What and how do you eat on the space station?
15. Please tell us about one interesting experiment you are currently doing.
16. Did you have any fears about going into space? If so, how did you
overcome those fears?
17. How do you fix the equipment without floating out into space?
18. You astronauts work hard. What do you do for fun?
19. What is the most interesting thing you do in a day?
20. Why do you take your shoes off when you are in space?

US Hams, don’t forget that there is a new process for US school proposals.
For US schools to have an ARISS contact, they must fill out a proposal,
submit it to NASA, and see if they are approved or not. Once a school is
approved and put on the list, an ARISS mentor will be assigned to assist the
school.
NASA will have two open windows a year for schools to submit a proposal.
The window for contacts during the second half of 2012 has already closed.
Look for the window for first half 2013 contacts later this year. You
must go through NASA to get the proposal material. Contact Teaching From
Space, a NASA Education office, at JSC-TFS-ARISS(a)mail.nasa.gov or by calling
them at (281) 244-2320.
The following US states and entities have never had an ARISS contact:
Arkansas, Delaware, Kansas, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont,
West Virginia, Wyoming, American Samoa, Guam, Northern Marianas Islands,
and the Virgin Islands.

The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 14:34 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between OR4ISS and IK1SLD. The contact should be audible over Italy and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English.
Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik (MUI) is located in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut (Population Approximately 3000) on the North west side of Hudson Bay. It is one of three schools in the Rankin Inlet system and hosts grades 7 - 12. The current Maani Ulujuk building is approximately 32 years old and is the second of two buildings with the same name; the first being destroyed by fire. MUI was named after an Elder( Maani Ulujuk), who at the time of its naming, was the oldest elder in the community. There are 353 students, 24 teachers, 6 Student Support Assistants, 1 Secretary, 1 School Community Counsellor and 2 caretakers.
Even though we don't have a space club, we do have a vibrant Science program which hosts a science fair annually and students have been exposed to the space program in the curriculum. Students and staff were excited last year when we were slated to do a space hookup in April; however, it did get cancelled and we are pleased that it is on again for this year.
Students at MUI are great young leaders and they love to participate in novel events such as contacting the astronauts on the Space Station. This will be an awesome event and we look forward to participating.
Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows:
1. Is it different breathing on Space Station than on earth?
2. How many toilets are on space station and how long does it take to train
to use them?
3. What do you eat and can you eat everything you do on earth?
4. How long did you train to become an Astronaut?
5. What do you wear daily and does your Space Suit need to be near in case
of emergencies?
6. How long did it take you to travel to Space Station and is coming back
the same?
7. How many people are on board with you and what is the most amount of
people at one time?
8. How long will you be on Space Station and how long could you stay?
9. How do you wash and how often?
10. How fast is the Space Station travelling and can you feel it?
11. Can you see the Northern Lights from up there?
12. Do you see sunsets and sunrises?
13. What's the coolest or most interesting thing you have seen so far?
14. How often do you contact Family and/or Friends?
15. Will you ever go back into Space after this mission?
16. Did you have fun singing with the Bare-naked Ladies Band?

ARISS is an international educational outreach program partnering the participating space agencies, NASA, Russian Space Agency, ESA, CNES, JAXA, and CSA, with the AMSAT and IARU organizations from participating countries.
ARISS offers an opportunity for students to experience the excitement of Amateur Radio by talking directly with crewmembers on-board the International Space Station. Teachers, parents and communities see, first hand, how Amateur Radio and crewmembers on ISS can energize youngsters' interest in science, technology, and learning. Further information on the ARISS program is available on the website http://www.ariss.org/ (graciously hosted by the Radio Amateurs of Canada).

One of the ARISS operation team mentors
Please join us in listening to the ISS contact with participants at the
Bates College Museum of Art, Lewiston, ME, USA on Tuesday April 23rd. AOS
is anticipated at 14:38 UTC
The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The
contact will be a telebridge between OR4ISS and IK1SLD in Italy. The
contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. Interested
parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is
expected to be conducted in English.
Audio from this contact will be fed into the:
EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers
IRLP Node 9010 Discovery Reflector
Streaming Audio at: https://sites.google.com/site/arissaudio/
Audio on Echolink & web stream is generally transmitted around 20 minutes
prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the
preparation that occurs. IRLP will begin just prior to the ground station
call to the ISS.
Please note that on Echolink there are automatic breaks of 1.5 seconds in
the audio transmission. These occur every 2.5 minutes during the event.
Breaks on IRLP are manual and occur approximately after every third
question.
** Contact times are approximate. If the ISS executes a reboost or other
manoeuvre, the AOS (Acquisition Of Signal) time may alter by a few minutes
