An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Bates College Museum of Art, Lewiston, ME on 23 Apr. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 14:38 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between OR4ISS and IK1SLD. The contact should be audible over Italy and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English.
In an arrangement proposed by the Bates College Museum of Art in conjunction with our 2012 exhibition Starstruck: The Fine Art of Astrophotography, local 8th Grade students are preparing to talk with astronauts on the International Space Station in April through the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station program (ARISS). Please keep up-to-date on contact details through bates.edu/museum/events/Students from the Auburn and Lewiston middle schools will take part in the live radio communication. Members of ARISS were excited by how our project brought the world of art and creativity into a program aimed at science, technology, engineering and math classrooms. To prepare for the contact, students visited the exhibition as part of their space science unit, researched comets and geomagnetic storms, modeled the solar system, explored citizen-science projects like Galaxy Zoo, and, using NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day as a model, researched Starstruck images and wrote paragraphs explaining their significance. It is gratifying to see an art exhibition ignite so much interest in such a wide variety of subjects, and especially to see a reunification of art and science achieved through this exhibition and the ARISS program.
Senators Angus King and Susan Collins and Congressman Michael Michaud have been invited to attend the event.
Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows:
1. What are the biggest struggles of living on the Space Station?
2. What would you like to see NASA accomplish soon such as a manned mission
to Mars to extensive zero-gravity experiments?
3. In your opinion, what are the most beneficial or useful experiments in
space?
4. Does all of the electricity come from the solar panels or is there
another natural resource that the ISS uses?
5. How will determining the accuracy of the MRI help doctors here on Earth?
6. After all of your training, what was your hardest task in space, and
whats your greatest achievement?
7. Have any of the algorithms made by students to operate the spheres
satellite on board the space station been successful?
8. Explain the training that takes place underwater and its similarity with
the feeling in space.
9. Has there ever been a surprise illness or emergency, what happened?
10. If I wanted to become an astronaut when I grew up, what advice would you
give me?
11. Can any diseases or disabilities be caused by going to space?
12. Are there ISS experiments that deal with the psychological stresses of
being in space or away from loved ones for extended periods?
13. What would be the challenges to having a baby or doing surgery in space?
14. What does everything look like outside of the space station? What do the
planets, sun and stars look like?
15. What animals are allowed on the ISS?
16. When you launched into space, how many "G"s did you experience on the
way up? What does it feel like?
17. How is working in limited gravity interesting and challenging?
18. What is your biggest fear in space?
19. How do you keep the ISS clean?
20. How exactly would you describe the sensation of suddenly going
weightless from passing through Earth's atmosphere?
21. What kinds of disagreements happen on the ISS and how do you resolve
them?
22. How difficult is it to sleep in space?

An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Gray Mountain Primary School, Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada on 20 Apr. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 18:47 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between OR4ISS and IK1SLD. The contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English.
The incredible opportunity to speak with the I.S.S. and Chris Hadfield has sparked a frenzy of space related themes and ideas throughout our school and inspired the community. Our small school has been transformed into a space education station with student-created learning displays and artwork throughout. The kids have been reading and writing using space to inspire imaginations and incorporating space exploration into math and science lessons. We have a local artist who is coming to build a life size Soyuz spacecraft out of recycled materials with the Grade 2s and 3s and the media is incredibly excited. The entire process is being documented with pictures and video from the ground, which will lead up to the contact and everyone involved is on pins and needles.
Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows:
1. Can you see the Great Wall of China and other famous landmarks and which
is your favorite to view from the space station?
2. What things can't you do in space that you can do on earth?
3. How big is the space station and do you have enough room to dance?
4. What would happen if there was a fire on the space station, and do you
have an escape plan?
5. Does your body respond to exercise the same way in space, like your heart
rate and sweating?
6. I was wondering if there is a television on the international space
station and do you get many channels?
7. How much water do you keep on the space station and how do you keep it
from freezing?
8. If you took a plant with you to the space station would the quick changes
in light and dark help it or hurt it?
9. Have you ever walked on any planet or moon other than Earth and do you
want to?
10. How long do you sleep for each night and does the sun keep you awake?
11. What kind of exercises do you do to keep fit on the space station?
12. How long can you stay up in space without fresh supplies?
13. Can you see and hear the northern lights from in the space station?
14. How do you go in and out of the space station without wasting air?
15. Do you have to be in a military branch to be an astronaut, and what other
things do you have to be able to do?
16. What kinds of things do you do to entertain yourself when you don't have
to work?
17. What would happen to a balloon if you blew it up on the space station and
took it outside with you on a spacewalk?
18. How do you play music in space and what do you like to listen to?
19. When are you coming to the Yukon to visit our school?

ARISS offers an opportunity for students to experience the excitement of Amateur Radio by talking directly with crewmembers on-board the International Space Station. Teachers, parents and communities see, first hand, how Amateur Radio and crewmembers on ISS can energize youngsters' interest in science, technology, and learning. Further information on the ARISS program is available on the website http://www.ariss.org/ (graciously hosted by the Radio Amateurs of Canada).

US Hams, don’t forget that there is a new process for US school proposals.
For US schools to have an ARISS contact, they must fill out a proposal,
submit it to NASA, and see if they are approved or not. Once a school is
approved and put on the list, an ARISS mentor will be assigned to assist the
school.
NASA will have two open windows a year for schools to submit a proposal.
The window for contacts during the second half of 2012 has already closed.
Look for the window for first half 2013 contacts later this year. You
must go through NASA to get the proposal material. Contact Teaching From
Space, a NASA Education office, at JSC-TFS-ARISS(a)mail.nasa.gov or by calling
them at (281) 244-2320.
The following US states and entities have never had an ARISS contact:
Arkansas, Delaware, Kansas, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont,
West Virginia, Wyoming, American Samoa, Guam, Northern Marianas Islands,
and the Virgin Islands.

73,
Charlie Sufana AJ9N
One of the ARISS operation team mentors
Please join us in listening to the ISS contact with participants at
the *Innalik
School, Inukjuak, Nunavik, Quebec, Canada* on Friday April 12th. AOS is
anticipated at 17:30 UTC
The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The
contact will be a telebridge between OR4ISS and IK1SLD in Italy. The
contact is expected to be conducted in English, French and Inuktitut.
Inukjuak is a remote, fly-in Inuit community located on the Hudson Bay in
Northern Quebec. Its population is approximately 1 600. The Inuit of
Inukjuak still partake in many cultural practices, for example;
constructing sleds or harpoons, sewing traditional garments, training
dogsled teams, hunting, fishing and berry picking. However, they also have
a window into the modern world and are current on fashion trends, popular
music, and breakout phenomena like “Gangnam Style”. The primary language in
the school and in the village is Inuktitut; English and French are
secondary languages.
Audio from this contact will be fed into the:
EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers
IRLP Node 9010 Discovery Reflector
Streaming Audio at: https://sites.google.com/site/arissaudio/
Audio on Echolink & web stream is generally transmitted around 20 minutes
prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the
preparation that occurs. IRLP will begin just prior to the ground station
call to the ISS.
Please note that on Echolink there are automatic breaks of 1.5 seconds in
the audio transmission. These occur every 2.5 minutes during the event.
Breaks on IRLP are manual and occur approximately after every third
question.
** Contact times are approximate. If the ISS executes a reboost or other
manoeuvre, the AOS (Acquisition Of Signal) time may alter by a few minutes
