ARISS Events - Three contacts - Switzerland, Washington D.C. and Illinois, Fri (Sept 22)

Several International Space Station ARISS school contacts have been planned for Friday, Sept 22. Thomas Reiter will speak with students at the Gymnase Intercantonal de la Broye, Payerne, Switzerland on Friday, 22 Aug 2006 beginning about 10:44 UTC. Students at George Washington University in Washington D.C will speak with Anousheh Ansari about 16:49 UTC under control operator privileges of a US licensed crew member. On the very next orbit at about 18:25 UTC, students at Crete-Monee Middle School in Crete, IL will speak with ISS Exp 13 crew member Jeff Williams. The contacts will be direct between stations DP0ISS and HB4FR for the first event. The next two events will have NA1SS contacting KE4GDU and then AJ9N for the third event . The contacts should be audible to anyone in portions of Europe for the first pass and then Eastern Canada and the Eastern United States for the last two events. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. Information about the three schools follows: The Gymnase Intercantonal de la Broye is located in the town of Payerne, 40 km southwest of Bern, in the French speaking part of Switzerland. It first opened in August 2005 with 300 students. The class M1d , having the ARISS QSO is composed of 23 students (17 girls and 6 boys), aged between 15 and 17 years. Their studies will end up with a Certificate of Maturity. The class is conducted by Mrs. Florence Lamon, and the school director is Mr. Thierry Maire. The QSO will be held in the museum "Clin d'Ailes", located on the Payerne Swiss Airforce Base. The museum "Clin d'Ailes" shows the military aeronautics of the second half of the 20th century. The president of the Museum Foundation is Mr. Claude Nicollier, first Swiss Astronaut. Mr. Nicollier will be with the students during the QSO. After the QSO, the students will follow the Swiss Space Days activities organized by the Swiss Astronautics Association in the Gymnase and the museum "Clin d'Ailes". The George Washington University had its beginning in 1821 as The Columbian College in the District of Columbia. The name of the institution was changed in 1873 to Columbian University and in 1904 to The George Washington University. The debt of the University to George Washington, whose name it bears, is an intangible one. The George Washington University, an independent academic institution chartered by the Congress of the United States in 1821, dedicates itself to furthering human well-being. The event will be broadcast live on NASA TV. Reporters may ask questions from NASA's Johnson Space Center, Houston; Kennedy Space Center, Fla.; and NASA Headquarters in Washington during the 20-minute conference. Media interested in participating should contact their preferred NASA location by 5 p.m. EDT Thursday. Members of the 14th crew of the station, Expedition 14 Commander and NASA astronaut Mike Lopez-Alegria and Flight Engineer and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin, docked their Soyuz spacecraft at the station early Wednesday. With them is Spaceflight Participant Anousheh Ansari, a U.S. businesswoman visiting the complex for eight days under a commercial agreement with the Russian Federal Space Agency. The new arrivals were greeted by the 13th station crew, Expedition 13 Commander Pavel Vinogradov, Flight Engineer Jeff Williams and European Space Agency astronaut Thomas Reiter. Vinogradov and Williams have been on the station since March. Reiter joined them in July, arriving on the Space Shuttle Discovery. Vinogradov, Williams and Ansari will undock from the station and land Sept. 28. Reiter will remain aboard, joining Lopez-Alegria and Tyurin for Expedition 14. The station news conference may be rescheduled if the shuttle Atlantis' Thursday landing is delayed until Friday. What's up with AO-51?

Observations from AO-51 passes on 9/19 and 9/20: 1. Do others sense that AO-51 V/U is currently weaker on downlink that it normally was when in the usual medium power mode (not comparing to the recent high-power mode)? 2. Are others hearing a "buzz/fuzz/hash" on the AO-51 downlink signal? 3. If so, does anyone understand what's going on? Thanks and 73, Richard N1ASA

Atlantis Cleared for Re-Entry

SUBMITTED BY ARTHUR N1ORC - AMSAT A/C #31468 Atlantis Cleared for Re-Entry; Crew Eyes Thursday Landing Mission Control Houston gave the STS-115 crew good news this morning: Mission managers cleared Space Shuttle Atlantis for landing. The first available landing opportunity is at 6:21 a.m. EDT (1021 UTC)Thursday at Kennedy Space Center, Fla. The word came after engineers reviewed heat shield inspections performed by the crew. The inspections were conducted to ensure all of Atlantis’ critical equipment is in good shape. To get ready for landing, the crew packed up gear and stowed the Ku-Band antenna, which is used for most shuttle television transmissions. Forecasts for Thursday call for acceptable weather at the Florida landing site. Atlantis’ first and prime landing opportunity begins with a de-orbit burn at 5:14 a.m.(0914 UTC), to start the descent to Florida. A second opportunity is available, beginning with a de-orbit burn at 6:50 a.m. leading to a landing at 7:57 a.m. in Florida. The STS-115 mission has resumed the construction of the International Space Station. Atlantis delivered the P3/P4 integrated truss to the station on Sept. 11. The STS-115 and Expedition 13 crews used the shuttle and station robotic arms to attach the truss to the orbital outpost. Then STS-115 astronauts conducted three spacewalks in four days to prepare the truss and its solar arrays for operation. SUBMITTED BY ARTHUR N1ORC - AMSAT A/C #31468 2 a.m. CDT Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006 Mission Control Center, Houston, Texas 09.20.06 STATUS REPORT: STS-115-22 STS-115 MCC Status Report #22 The Space Shuttle Atlantis crew began another survey of the spacecraft's heat shield late Tuesday after mission managers decided the orbiter would spend another day in space. That decision was made after cameras detected a piece of debris near the shuttle early Tuesday. The survey is to make sure Atlantis is ready for re-entry and its landing at the Kennedy Space Center. Florida weather also was questionable for a Wednesday landing. The crew woke up at 8:45 p.m. CDT Tuesday to “Beautiful Day” by U2, played for Heide Stefanyshyn-Piper. After some routine personal time, they began the survey at about 11:30 p.m. Pilot Chris Ferguson and Mission Specialists Dan Burbank and Steve MacLean are using the shuttle's robotic arm and its cameras to get a full look at Atlantis' thermal protection system. The task could take up to five hours. Specialists on the ground will review the imagery as it is available and determine if a more detailed survey using the 50-foot orbiter boom sensor system (OBSS) is warranted. The OBSS survey, if needed, would take another three hours. Atlantis Commander Brent Jett and Mission Specialists Joe Tanner and Piper will help as needed with the survey and continue with other tasks including waste and water dump, exercise, downlink of imagery and stowage of the Payload General Support Computer. Atlantis' next landing opportunity is Thursday with a deorbit engine firing at 4:14 a.m. CDT and touchdown at 5:22 a.m. Atlantis has enough supplies to stay in orbit until Saturday. Early Wednesday International Space Station Expedition 14 Commander Michael Lopez-Alegria and Flight Engineer Mikhail Tyurin, and spaceflight participant Anousheh Ansari arrived at the orbiting laboratory. Their Soyuz docked at 12:21 a.m. The hatch opening and welcoming ceremony with the Expedition 13 crew, Commander Pavel Vinogradov and Flight Engineers Jeff Williams and Thomas Reiter, is scheduled for 3:30 a.m. The next STS-115 mission status report will be issued Wednesday afternoon, or earlier if events warrant.

The decision to pursue additional inspections was made this morning after video from cameras aboard the shuttle showed a piece of debris in close proximity to the vehicle. Also, the weather forecast for a landing on Wednesday had called for poor conditions, and Atlantis has plentiful supplies aboard to allow multiple landing attempts as late as Saturday. Atlantis is now aimed toward a landing on Thursday at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, Florida. Engineers are concerned the debris seen could be something that came loose from Atlantis. They will use the extra time to verify the shuttle is in good shape for the trip home. Atlantis' crew -- Commander Brent Jett, Pilot Chris Ferguson and mission specialists Joe Tanner, Dan Burbank, Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Steve MacLean -- will use the shuttle's robotic arm on Wednesday to inspect the spacecraft. The crew began a sleep period at 12:45 p.m. CDT today and will awaken at 8:45 p.m. CDT. Before going to sleep, the crew positioned the arm above the payload bay, and Mission Control has used its cameras to survey the top side of the shuttle. The cameras on the robotic arm will later be used by the crew to inspect areas on the underside of Atlantis. Atlantis' primary landing opportunity to Kennedy on Thursday begins with a deorbit engine firing at 4:14 am. CDT and culminates in a touchdown at 5:22 a.m. CDT. Meanwhile, the International Space Station's next crew, Expedition 14 Commander Mike Lopez-Alegria and Soyuz Commander and Flight Engineer Mikhail Tyurin are closing in on the complex. With them is Spaceflight Participant Anousheh Ansari, a U.S. businesswoman who will spend eight days on the station under a commercial agreement with the Russian Federal Space Agency. They will dock their Soyuz spacecraft to the station at 12:24 a.m. CDT Wednesday. Aboard the station, Expedition 13 Commander Pavel Vinogradov, Flight Engineer and NASA Science Officer Jeff Williams and Flight Engineer Thomas Reiter, a European Space Agency astronaut, will open hatches to greet their new arrivals at 3:10 a.m. CDT Wednesday. The station crew spent some additional time earlier today gathering data on the Elektron oxygen generating system's overheating malfunction. Russian engineers are continuing to evaluate the system's malfunction and future repairs. Repair work is not planned to be performed while the crew hands over operations of the complex to Expedition 14. Oxygen supplies on the station are plentiful, and the cabin air will be refreshed using oxygen canisters and tanks until the Elektron is repaired.

Expedition 14 Commander Michael Lopez-Alegria and Flight Engineer Mikhail Tyurin are scheduled to enter the station when the hatches are opened at around 4:30 a.m., where they will be greeted by the Expedition 13 crew. Accompanying Expedition 14 is American Anousheh Ansari, who will be the first female spaceflight participant to visit the station. She is flying under contract with the Russian Federal Space Agency. Lopez-Alegria and Tyurin will replace Expedition 13 Commander Pavel Vinogradov and NASA Science Officer Jeff Williams. European Space Agency Astronaut Thomas Reiter will remain on the station and join Expedition 14.
