ISS Crew Prepares for Return Home, Shuttle Visit

Credit: NASA TO VIEW IMAGE GO TO:http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/main/index.html Preparations continued Wednesday as the clock counts down to a crew change aboard the International Space Station and a visit by space shuttle Discovery. The Mobile Transporter and Mobile Base System, a movable platform that allows the station’s robotic arm to move back and forth along the truss, was commanded from the ground to move to the port side of the station in preparation for the STS-120 shuttle mission. The railcar traversed the 74-foot distance at a rate of about one inch per second. Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and Flight Engineer Oleg Kotov opened the hatches to the Progress cargo craft. The hatches were closed last week for the relocation of the Soyuz TMA-10 spacecraft as a contingency measure in case the crew was unable to return to the station. Flight Engineer Clay Anderson collected air samples and surface swabs throughout the station. The samples will be incubated and analyzed for bacterial and fungal contamination. The Expedition 15 crew members continue with preparations for their departure and the arrival of the next crew. The Expedition 16 crew, Commander Peggy Whitson and Flight Engineer Yuri Malenchenko, will launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Oct. 10 and arrive at the station on Oct. 12. Accompanying Expedition 16 is Malaysian spaceflight participant Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, who will return to Earth on Oct. 21 with Yurchikhin and Kotov. STS-120 Payload in Place

SUBMITTED BY ARTHUR N1ORC - AMSAT A/C#31468 3 OCTOBER 2007 *Payload in Place* On Launch Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the payload for mission STS-120 has been installed in space station Discovery's cargo bay. The payload includes the Italian-built U.S. Harmony module, which will be delivered to the International Space Station during the mission. The module will serve as the future connecting point between the U.S. Destiny lab, the European Space Agency's Columbus module and the Japanese Kibo module. The seven STS-120 crew members are due to arrive in Florida on Sunday evening in advance of next week's launch dress rehearsal activities. During the week, the astronauts and ground crews are scheduled to participate in various simulated countdown activities and training exercises. Launch of Discovery is targeted Oct. 23. An International Space Station Expedition 15 ARISS school contact has been planned with scouts at the Prairielands Council, Boy Scouts of America, Space Jamboree Camp Robert Drake (Oakwood, IL), Champaign, Illinois USA on 06 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 19:11 UTC. The contact will be a telebridge between stations NA1SS and VK4KHZ. The contact should be audible along Eastern portions of Australia. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. In addition, the audio should be available via IRLP and EchoLink. The participants are expected to conduct the conversation in English. Space Exploration and Radio Merit Badges form the core of our Space Jamboree program. Mars exploration, Moon base design and studying the International Space Station are some of the things we are learning about. Pioneering skills are traditional Scouting activities, yet Science and Technology have always been at the forefront of exploration and we are looking forward to a telebridge phone call from a modern pioneer on the edge of space exploration. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. We are taught about "Leave No Trace" here, on Earth. I hear about 'space junk' and 'space trash'. How do astronauts deal with trash and 'other stuff' in space? 2. When you get back to Earth, do you ever dream that you are floating? 3. What do you like to do in your free time? 4. How did your parents react when you told them you were going into the space program? 5. What type of exercises do you have to do because of zero gravity? 6. Have you given any thought to what games we might play in space, like Harry Potter "Quidditch," for instance? 7. How do you store stuff when you have no gravity? 8. What kinds of emergencies did you train to handle? 9. Is the space life better than earth life? 10. What are your favorite Russian foods? 11. Why would you launch Luke's Light Saber? If Spielberg doesn't want it anymore, can I have it? 12. I heard that some astronauts get sick when they take off and land. How do you clean the helmets or do you have spares? 13. What do you do at the space station? 14. In your training to become an astronaut, what did you enjoy most? What did you enjoy least? 15. How many times do you get out of your shuttle with a space suit? 16. I know you like music, can you sing louder, longer, with a wider vocal range in space? 17. What games/sports do you or can you play? 18. How do you cope with living in such close quarters with people you only met recently? 19. Is there any season in space? 20. An International Space Station Expedition 15 ARISS school contact has been planned with participants at the Town of Anamizu ARISS School Contact Executive Committee, Anamizu-town , Housu-gun Ishikawa, Japan on 06 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 09:23 UTC. The contact will be a direct between stations NA1SS and 8J9ISS. The contact should be audible in most of Japan. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The participants are expected to conduct the conversation in English. On June 6, 2006, the Town of Anamizu ARISS School Contact Executive Committee was established and started operations toward its implementation. This committee is led by the Superintendent of the Anamizu Town Board of Education and also includes teachers from the six elementary and junior high schools in Anamizu, the Ishikawa Polytechnic College, and members from the Anamizu Town Board of Education. Past activities began with the application submission for ARISS School Contact in July of 2006 and continued with student activities in July of 2007, including building lessons (making and launching of water rockets from soft drink bottles), the Tanabata gStar Festivalh night sky observation, webpage creation lesson and a rehearsal for communication with the space station. Introduction of Anamizu Town The town of Anamizu is located on the Noto Peninsula and is a place abundant with nature that is surrounded by mountains and the ocean. In 1889, Percival Lowell became interested in the Noto Peninsula and visited Anamizu, which he introduced in his book titled Noto. As a commemoration of the last point on Lowellfs journey, a monument was constructed and to commemorate Lowell himself, a telescope has been provided for this town with starry skies. At the end of March this past year, the nature-filled town of Anamizu was hit by the Noto Peninsula Earthquake and suffered a large amount of damage. The success of this dream project will most certainly give local citizens a sense of strength to help recover from the earthquake. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Do you have any free time? 2. What do shooting stars look like from space? 3. Can you see the forest destruction and desertification from space? 4. Can you tell when it is night or morning in space? 5. What does it smell like in the space station? 6. Do you miss your family? 7. How do you throw away trash from the space station? 8. Do raw foods get spoiled in space too? 9. Is the starlit sky the same in space? 10. Is it true that you will lose your balance after you come back from space? 11. Have you ever seen an UFO? 12. Is it possible for us to go to space without training? 13. What would you do when you are sick or get injured? 14. Is it true that meteorites are flying around in space? 15. How do you get rid of carbon dioxide in the space station? 16. What is beautiful in space? 17. Is it tiring to float? 18. How much monthly trash is there in space? 19. What do you do at the space station? 20. Credit: NASA \TO VIEW IMAGE GO TO:http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/main/index.html The Expedition 15 crew members Tuesday began a test of a new oxygen-generating system and continued with preparations for their return to Earth and the arrival of the next crew to the International Space Station. Flight Engineer Clay Anderson activated the Oxygen Generation System (OGS) in the Destiny lab. He then took readings with a sound level meter to measure its noise levels. While the OGS operates at 50 percent capacity, flight controllers will evaluate its performance. The OGS is designed to supply oxygen for a full station complement of six crew members. Anderson, Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and Flight Engineer Oleg Kotov continue with preparations for their departure and for the arrival of the next crew. Image credit: NASA/George Shelton + View larger image <http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/170419main_07pd2636.jpg> On Sunday, space shuttle Discovery arrived at Launch Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, resting on the hardstand by 1:15 p.m. The shuttle began its slow 3.4-mile journey to the pad atop the crawler transporter at 6:47 a.m., leaving the Vehicle Assembly Building as the sun began to rise. Also at the pad is the payload canister containing the Harmony module that the STS-120 crew will deliver to the International Space Station. Harmony will be installed in Discovery's payload bay as launch preparations continue at the pad.
