Harmony will provide the docking ports for new research laboratories from the European Space Agency and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. The laboratories will be delivered to the station on upcoming shuttle missions. The crews are also preparing for Sunday’s spacewalk, the second of the mission. The spacewalk will be conducted by Mission Specialist Scott Parazynski and Expedition 16 Flight Engineer Daniel Tani. Harmony was attached to the station at 11:38 a.m. EDT during STS-120’s first spacewalk. The addition of the Harmony module sets the stage for the arrival of new research laboratories from the European Space Agency and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency during upcoming shuttle missions. Four more spacewalks will take place during STS-120’s stay at the station. The two crews will also transfer cargo between Space Shuttle Discovery and the station. STS-120 is the 23rd shuttle mission to visit the station. An STS-120 ARISS school contact has been planned with participants at Liceo Scientifico G.Galilei, Civitavecchia, Roma, Italy and ITI-LST Mottura Caltanisetta, Italy on 31 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 07:33 UTC. The contact will be a direct between station IZØJPA (Nespoli) and ground stations IZØLSG and IT9YBA. The contact should be audible in most of Europe. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The participants are expected to conduct the conversation in Italian. Live audio from this contact can be heard on the EchoLink AMSAT (101 377) and JK1ZRW (277 208) Conference Rooms, and on the IRLP Discovery Reflector 9010. For further information, please check the calendar of events on www.amsat.org. Galileo Galilei is a high school with a scientific focus in Civitavecchia. There are 650 students aged between 14 and 19 attending our school. The main subjects are math, physics, natural sciences, Italian, English, history and philosophy. Our school is situated in Civitavecchia near Rome. It is famous for its most important harbour in Italy. Marconi conducted experiments on microwaves, RADAR, radio mobile telephone and the use of the moon as a natural satellite. He sent waves to the moon and received their reflections. ITI - LST Mottura is the oldest mining school in Italy, founded in 1862. It offers three different specialized courses which are the scientific and technological orientation, electrical engineering and automation and the geo-environmental course. Among its extra activities there are the following courses: sound technology, aeronautic technology and virtual aviation, radio-astronomy, astrophysics and astronomy. There is a "Science Festival" every year. The school has a telescope and a radio telescope on the school roof. The number of students enrolled is 998. The excursion is scheduled to wrap up at about 12:32 p.m. Mission Specialist Paolo Nespoli is the spacewalk coordinator, assisting the spacewalkers with their tasks from inside the spacecraft. Mission Specialists Stephanie Wilson and Clay Anderson and Expedition 16 Flight Engineer Daniel Tani are at the controls of the station’s Canadian-built robotic arm. The spacewalkers have removed and stowed the S-band Antenna Structural Assembly. They also secured a Payload and Data Grapple Fixture onto Harmony that could not be in place during launch, removed contamination covers and disconnected the power cables linking Harmony to Discovery. The station robotic arm operators are removing Harmony from the payload bay and will move it toward its position on Unity. It also allows the addition of international laboratories from Europe and Japan to the station. Image to right: This graphic shows the International Space Station's U.S. Node 2. Harmony provides a passageway between three station science experiment facilities: the U.S. Destiny Laboratory, the Kibo Japanese Experiment Module, and the European Columbus Laboratory. It also provides connecting ports for Multi-Purpose Logistics Modules, the Japanese H II Transfer Vehicle and the Pressurized Mating Adapter 2 to which space shuttles dock. The Space Station Robotic Arm, Canadarm2, can operate from a powered grapple fixture on the exterior of Node 2. Under contract of the Italian Space Agency, Alenia Spazio in Turin, Italy, led a consortium of European sub-contractors to build the node. It was built for NASA under a barter agreement with the European Space Agency in exchange for the launch of the European Columbus Laboratory by the space shuttle to the International Space Station. Its pressurized volume is 75.5 cubic meters (2666 cubic feet), and its launch weight is approximately 14,288 kilograms (31,500 pounds). Node 2 arrived at Kennedy Space Center, Fla. on June 1, 2003 to begin final preparations for its launch on shuttle mission STS-120, station assembly flight 10A. The name for Node 2, Harmony, was announced on March 15, 2007.

An STS-120 ARISS school contact has been planned with participants at IIS Deambrosis-Natta Sestri Levante, Italy and the Faculty of Engineering, University of L'Aquila, L'Aquila, Italy on 29 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 08:23 UTC. The contact will be a direct between station IZØJPA (Nespoli) and ground stations IK1XHI and IZ6BAJ. The contact should be audible in most of Europe. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The participants are expected to conduct the conversation in Italian. Live audio from this contact can be heard on the EchoLink AMSAT (101 377) and JK1ZRW (277 208) Conference Rooms, and on the IRLP Discovery Reflector 9010. For further information, please check the calendar of events on www.amsat.org. The IIS Deambrosis-Natta school is located in Sestri Levante, near Genoa. It consists of 900 students and 140 teachers. The Deambrosis-Natta is a high school specializing in scientific and technological subjects. Students can choose among several courses: mechanical, electronics, electro-technological focusing on automation. It also specializes in telecommunications. The school is a member of the national networks "The radio at school" and "Radio transmission experiments for educational purposes". The Engineering Faculty of the University of L'Aquila was founded in 1964 and now offers 10 different undergraduate degree programs at the level of Bachelor of Science in Engineering, 12 graduate degree programs at the level of Master of Engineering, one single-stage degree program, and a number of advanced graduate courses leading to the degree of a PhD. In the field of Information Engineering there are specific degree programs in Electronics, Telecommunications, Automation and Computer Science. The faculty is located on the hill-top of Roio a few km from the city of L'Aquila. Presently there are 5000 students enrolled, who reach a high level of preparation through the coordinated action of 164 faculty professors.
