Mission Specialists Stephanie Wilson and Clay Anderson and Expedition 16 Flight Engineer Daniel Tani are at the controls of the station’s Canadian-built robotic arm. The spacewalkers have removed and stowed the S-band Antenna Structural Assembly. They also secured a Payload and Data Grapple Fixture onto Harmony that could not be in place during launch, removed contamination covers and disconnected the power cables linking Harmony to Discovery. The station robotic arm operators are removing Harmony from the payload bay and will move it toward its position on Unity. It also allows the addition of international laboratories from Europe and Japan to the station. Image to right: This graphic shows the International Space Station's U.S. Node 2. Harmony provides a passageway between three station science experiment facilities: the U.S. Destiny Laboratory, the Kibo Japanese Experiment Module, and the European Columbus Laboratory. It also provides connecting ports for Multi-Purpose Logistics Modules, the Japanese H II Transfer Vehicle and the Pressurized Mating Adapter 2 to which space shuttles dock. The Space Station Robotic Arm, Canadarm2, can operate from a powered grapple fixture on the exterior of Node 2. Under contract of the Italian Space Agency, Alenia Spazio in Turin, Italy, led a consortium of European sub-contractors to build the node. It was built for NASA under a barter agreement with the European Space Agency in exchange for the launch of the European Columbus Laboratory by the space shuttle to the International Space Station. Node 2 arrived at Kennedy Space Center, Fla. on June 1, 2003 to begin final preparations for its launch on shuttle mission STS-120, station assembly flight 10A. An STS-120 ARISS school contact has been planned with participants at IIS Deambrosis-Natta Sestri Levante, Italy and the Faculty of Engineering, University of L'Aquila, L'Aquila, Italy on 29 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 08:23 UTC. The contact will be a direct between station IZØJPA (Nespoli) and ground stations IK1XHI and IZ6BAJ. The contact should be audible in most of Europe. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The participants are expected to conduct the conversation in Italian. Live audio from this contact can be heard on the EchoLink AMSAT (101 377) and JK1ZRW (277 208) Conference Rooms, and on the IRLP Discovery Reflector 9010. For further information, please check the calendar of events on www.amsat.org. The IIS Deambrosis-Natta school is located in Sestri Levante, near Genoa. It consists of 900 students and 140 teachers. The Deambrosis-Natta is a high school specializing in scientific and technological subjects. Students can choose among several courses: mechanical, electronics, electro-technological focusing on automation. It also specializes in telecommunications. The school is a member of the national networks "The radio at school" and "Radio transmission experiments for educational purposes". The Engineering Faculty of the University of L'Aquila was founded in 1964 and now offers 10 different undergraduate degree programs at the level of Bachelor of Science in Engineering, 12 graduate degree programs at the level of Master of Engineering, one single-stage degree program, and a number of advanced graduate courses leading to the degree of a PhD. In the field of Information Engineering there are specific degree programs in Electronics, Telecommunications, Automation and Computer Science. The faculty is located on the hill-top of Roio a few km from the city of L'Aquila. Presently there are 5000 students enrolled, who reach a high level of preparation through the coordinated action of 164 faculty professors. They used Discovery’s robotic arm and an attached boom extension to check the spacecraft’s underside, nose cap and leading edges of the wings as well as hard to reach shuttle surfaces. The inspections are performed to check if any damage occurred to the heat shield during the climb to orbit that began when Discovery lifted off Tuesday from Kennedy Space Center, Fla. Docking is scheduled to occur at 8:33 a.m. Thursday. Earlier today, the STS-120 crew checked out spacesuits to be used during the mission’s five scheduled spacewalks at the space station. One of the major objectives of the spacewalks is the temporary installation of the station’s newest component, the Node 2 module, also known as Harmony. In addition, the crew will relocate the station’s P6 truss and solar arrays. Crew members will use Discovery’s robotic arm and orbiter boom extension to check out the spacecraft’s nosecap and the leading edges of its wings. The inspections are conducted to see if any damage occurred to the heat shield during the climb to orbit that began when Discovery lifted off at 11:38 a.m. EDT Tuesday from Kennedy Space Center, Fla. In preparation for Thursday’s activities, the crew will extend the shuttle’s docking ring and check out tools they will use to rendezvous and link up with the station. Discovery and its crew will arrive at the station at about 8:30 a.m. Thursday. The crew members are also slated to check out spacesuits they will use during the mission’s five scheduled spacewalks at the station. One of the major objectives of the spacewalks is the temporary installation of the station’s newest component, the Node 2 module, also known as Harmony. In addition, the crew will also relocate the station’s P6 truss and solar arrays. Discovery lifted off from Kennedy Space Center, Fla.’s Launch Pad 39A at 11:38 a.m. EDT Tuesday to begin a two-day chase of the station. The STS-120 mission will continue the on-orbit construction of the station with the delivery and installation of the Harmony module. Also traveling with STS-120 is a new Expedition 16 crew member, astronaut Daniel Tani, who will replace Flight Engineer Clayton Anderson. Launch Director Mike Leinbach said the launch team at NASA's Kennedy Space Center was able to study a potential problem of ice buildup without jeopardizing the shuttle while still launching on time. "It was one of the cleanest countdowns we've had since I've been launch director," Leinbach said. Discovery and its seven astronauts have a tight schedule that calls for placing the new Harmony segment to the International Space Station, moving a tower of solar arrays already in space to a new location and overseeing the station crew rotation that will see Discovery astronaut Dan Tani and station resident Clayton Anderson switch places. "(There is) just a tremendous set of challenges in front of us," said Bill Gerstenmaier, NASA's associate administrator for Space Operations. There won't be much time to savor the liftoff, though, because preparations are already under way to get Atlantis over to the launch pad for a Dec. 6 launch. The lift off capped a flawless countdown on a brilliant Florida morning and began Discovery's chase of the International Space Station. Discovery and its seven astronauts will add a new module called Harmony to the orbiting laboratory during the STS-120 mission. They will also reposition a station segment already in orbit and crew member Dan Tani will move into the space station for a long-duration mission. Discovery is scheduled to land at Kennedy following the 14-day mission.

Weather is the main concern leading up to launch. The forecast calls for a 40 percent chance of acceptable conditions at the 11:38 a.m. EDT launch time. Because launch times are earlier each day, the forecast improves slightly for Wednesday and Thursday, with a 40-percent probability of weather prohibiting liftoff. She explained that they continue tracking a frontal boundary that may now arrive on Wednesday, earlier than previously predicted. The front should be out in the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday, but the timing of the front's arrival could cause problems for a Wednesday launch attempt should Tuesday's launch not occur. Weather should improve once the front passes through the area. There is still only a 10 percent chance that weather could prohibit tanking for Tuesday's liftoff. After bidding farewell to the Expedition 16 crew Saturday night, the Expedition 15 crew, Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and Flight Engineer Oleg Kotov, boarded their Soyuz TMA-10 spacecraft for the return to Earth.
