Commander Mike Lopez-Alegria and flight engineers Mikhail Tyurin and Suni Williams boarded their Soyuz TMA-9 spacecraft and undocked it from the Earth-facing port of the station's Zarya module at 6:30 p.m. EDT Thursday. With Tyurin at the controls, the craft was maneuvered to the aft port of the Zvezda module and docked at 6:54 p.m. The move was made to clear the Zarya port for the arrival of Expedition 15 Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and Flight Engineer Oleg Kotov, along with spaceflight participant Charles Simonyi on April 9. + Read more about the Soyuz relocation <http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/expeditions/expedition14/exp14_so…> On Tuesday, the unpiloted Progress 23 cargo craft was undocked from the aft port of the Zvezda service module. The cargo craft, filled with trash and unneeded items from the station, was commanded several hours after undocking to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere and burn up over the Pacific Ocean. The crew also continued science research aboard the orbital outpost this week, including a successful run with the Synchronized Position Hold, Engage, Reorient, Experimental Satellites (SPHERES) experiment. During a session with SPHERES, Williams set up a test in which three of the bowling-ball sized satellites flew together in formation within the station cabin for the first time.

SUBMITTED BY ARTHUR N1ORC - AMSAT A/C #31468 *International Space Station Status Report #07-16* *6:30 p.m. CDT Thursday, March 29, 2007* *Expedition 14 Crew* HOUSTON - The Expedition 14 crew continued preparations for the April arrival of a new station crew by boarding their Soyuz TMA-9 craft and taking a 24-minute flight from one station docking port to another. Flight Engineer Mikhail Tyurin guided the Soyuz away from the Earth-facing port of the station's Zarya module and docked it to the aft port of the Zvezda module. The move frees the Zarya port for the arrival of the Expedition 15 crew aboard the Soyuz TMA-10, scheduled to dock to the station on April 9. Tyurin undocked the Soyuz from Zarya at 5:30 p.m. CDT and redocked to the Zvezda port at 5:54 p.m. CDT as the station and the Soyuz flew 210 miles above the east coast of South America. Minutes later, hooks and latches engaged between the Soyuz' docking probe and Zvezda's docking port to attach the craft firmly to the station. During the time from undocking to redocking, the crew traveled about a third of the way around the world. To prepare for Thursday's undocking and relocation, Commander Michael Lopez-Alegria and flight engineers Tyurin and Sunita Williams shut down key station systems and configured the complex for autonomous operations in the unlikely event they would not be able to redock. Prior to undocking, Tyurin activated the Soyuz’ backup battery as a precaution when the prime spacecraft battery indicated a slightly lower voltage reading. It was quickly determined that the voltage drop was due to the activation of some Soyuz systems, and the prime battery soon returned to its normal voltage output. Late Thursday into early Friday, the crew will open the hatch to the Soyuz, re-enter the station and reactivate systems for regular activity. Friday will be an off-duty day for the crew as they readjust their sleep cycles, which were changed to accommodate the Soyuz move. Further preparation for the Soyuz relocation included the undocking and discarding of the ISS Progress 23 cargo craft from the aft Zvezda port on Tuesday, March 27, making room for the Soyuz to redock. That activity went smoothly; the ISS Progress undocked at 1:11 p.m. CDT and re-entered Earth's atmosphere at 5:44 p.m. Additional work for the crew this week included a first for the Synchronized Position Hold, Engage, Reorient, Experimental Satellites (SPHERES) experiment. The experiment uses 8-inch diameter spherical satellites that fly within the station cabin. The satellites test the basics of formation flight and autonomous docking that could be used in future spacecraft. This was the first time three satellites flew together in tests. Investigators for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, deemed the experiment highly successful. An International Space Station Expedition 14 ARISS school contact has been planned with students at St. Michael's Primary School in Daceyville, NSW, Australia on 02 April. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 23:35 UTC. The contact will be a direct between stations NA1SS and VK2KVE. The contact should be audible in Eastern portions of Australia. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The participants are expected to conduct the conversation in English. St Michael's Primary School Daceyville is situated in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney. It is a Catholic Systemic Primary School that serves the immediate community of Daceyville; with a number of students attending from outlying areas. The school has a population of 161 students ranging from Kindergarten (5 years old) to Year 6 (11 years old). The school delivers a wide curriculum across 7 key learning areas to ensure that children have access to a range of experiences and opportunities to develop knowledge, skills, understanding and values. As a school community we endeavor to instill in children a love of learning, a keen awareness of the world they live in and the important role they play as members of society. The curriculum capitalizes on the natural curiosity of children and the way they perceive the world. It is our hope that the students make the most of the educational opportunities which they are provided with. Students will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Do you suffer from travel or motion sickness when you're an astronaut? Does it cause you much discomfort? How do you cope with being sick in space? 2. Do you think that humans will eventually conquer space? And, does outer space have an end? What is at the end of space? 3. How do you wash and go to the toilet in space without making a big mess? 4. Is it fun to work in space? Will you go on a space walk outside the International Space Station? 5. Can you please explain what it feels like to be weightless. 6. What features on the earth can you see from space? 7. Have you ever seen or experienced anything you cannot explain? 8. Can you describe some of the experiments you are involved in aboard the International Space Station? 9. Do you believe there is life in outer space without any evidence? 10. How fast are you traveling and how long does it take to orbit the earth? 11. Is it true that black holes can swallow planets and suns? And, if the planet earth was swallowed by a black hole, would we die or still be alive? 12. Can you see other planets and stars from the International Space Station? And, why is our galaxy called the Milky Way? 13. Can you describe what it feels like to be blasting off on the space shuttle? Is it noisy? Is there much vibration? Is it like a fun-park ride? 14. Which scientists do you most admire? That is, which scientists would be your greatest inspiration and why? 15. Have black holes been observed from earth? What is the difference between a black hole and a worm hole? 16. In an ordinary earth day how many sunrises and sunsets will you see? And, how long do they last? 17. What has been the biggest set back in space travel? And, do you think much about the dangers of being an astronaut? 18. How long will you be in space for on this trip? And, will you miss the changing seasons? What sort of climate is on the International Space Station? 19. How do you sleep on the International Space Station? And, is it difficult to fall asleep? 20. Do you ever orbit close to satellites? Have you seen one close up? Or have you seen comets or meteors close up? 21. Approximately how many women are in the astronaut corps? How many have traveled to space? Is the training harder for women? 22. What does it feel like when you enter the earth's atmosphere and become weightless? What are the effects of weightlessness on your body after a long period? Going back to December 1990 when I started communicating with Musa Manarov on Mir and carried on bridging for the space shuttles, I have always had the pleasure and the honour to communicate with and for the Cosmonauts and Astronauts. This is now 16 years and without distracting from the dedication, expertise and friendship of all those involved, I am so impressed by the polished, warm, efficient and so much to the point, of Sunita Williams' - KD5PLB, conduct of her ARISS sessions, that I feel very strongly that she deserves some sort of unique recognition from AMSAT, for her outstanding, dedicated and polished performance. Such expertise must result in influencing some of her young listenenrs to enter the field of Amateur Radio or Space Exploration. Thursday afternoon, Commander Mike Lopez-Alegria and flight engineers Mikhail Tyurin and Sunita Williams will board their Soyuz TMA-9 spacecraft and move it from the Earth-facing port of the station's Zarya module to the aft port of the Zvezda module. The move is being made to clear the Zarya port for the arrival of Expedition 15 Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and Flight Engineer Oleg Kotov, along with spaceflight participant Charles Simonyi. When a Progress cargo craft is undocked and jettisoned, the valuable electronics are retained to be recycled on a future vehicle. Crew members will also check for hatch seal leaks. The cargo craft will be full of trash when it leaves to burn up in Earth's atmosphere. Tuesday's undocking from the aft port of the Zvezda service module is scheduled for 2:11 p.m. EDT, clearing that port for the flyover relocation of the Soyuz TMA-9 craft by the Expedition 14 crew on Thursday afternoon. Images of the Jamestown, Va. region were captured Saturday to fulfill a request associated with the upcoming 400th anniversary of the settlement of the city in May. The National Historical Site is situated on a small island near the north shore of the James River Estuary.

SUBMITTED BY ARTHUR N1ORC - AMSAT A/C #31468 *International Space Station Status Report #07-15* *3:30 p.m. CDT Friday, March 23, 2007* *Expedition 14 Crew* HOUSTON - The Expedition 14 crew continued work this week on scientific experiments and increased the bandwidth on the International Space Station's computer network. Commander Michael Lopez-Alegria and Flight Engineer Suni Williams spent time working with experiments that may hold the key to several aspects of long-duration space flight as NASA looks forward to missions back to the moon and on to Mars or other destinations. Each served as test subject and operator for the Anomalous Long Term Effects in Astronauts' Central Nervous System experiment that examines how cosmic radiation affects brain waves. As test subjects, they wore an electroencephalograph cap that records readings of their brain functions, and over that, a special helmet with Italian-designed instruments that records the amount and types of cosmic rays passing through the station. Since cosmic radiation is even more prevalent at greater distances from Earth, the research could lead to countermeasures important to the safety and productivity of future explorers. Lopez-Alegria and Williams also worked with the Nutritional Status Assessment experiment tracking how their bodies process nutrients in space and how food supplies are affected by storage in that environment. Additionally, Lopez-Alegria provided the final samples associated with the Renal Stone Risk during Spaceflight: Assessment and Countermeasure Validation investigation, which is looking at the space effectiveness of a drug used on Earth to prevent kidney stones. Flight Engineer Mikhail Tyurin worked with three Russian experiments that monitor cosmic rays and background radiation as they relate to long-duration flights and documented the condition of the Earth below from the unique vantage point of the station. The crew worked on an upgrade to the laptop computer network. The new, integrated station computer network will be 10 times faster than the current network, using Ethernet connectivity over a router and either cables or wireless equipment. This will eliminate drag-through cables from the U.S. segment into the Russian segment. The work was accelerated because of the STS-117 launch delay. They also continued preparations for the undocking and discarding of the ISS Progress 23 cargo ship, which will be full of trash when it departs Tuesday, March 27. Russian flight controllers sent commands Friday that piped the last of the Progress 23 oxygen supplies into the station, and vented the Progress' propellant and oxidizer lines overboard to ensure a safe departure. The Progress is scheduled to undock at 1:11 p.m. CDT next Tuesday. The station traffic schedule includes next Thursday's relocation of the Soyuz TMA-9 spacecraft from the Earth-facing port of the Zarya module to the aft port of the Zvezda Service Module. All three crew members will undock the Soyuz at 5:25 p.m. and redock at 5:53 p.m. This will make room for the arrival of the Soyuz TMA-10 spacecraft carrying the Expedition 15 crew and U.S. spaceflight participant Charles Simonyi. The new crew is scheduled to launch from the Baikanour Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan April 7 at 12:31 p.m. and dock with the station April 9 at 2:15 p.m. Following a week of joint operations, Lopez-Alegria, Tyurin and Simonyi will climb into Soyuz TMA-9 and head for home April 20. They will leave Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and Flight Engineer Oleg Kotov on board with Williams to start Expedition 15. An International Space Station Expedition 14 ARISS school contact has been planned with students at International School of Brussels, Brussels, Belgium on 27 Mar. The teleconference followed a meeting to assess the ongoing work. Managers decided that more testing and analysis are needed to determine whether the tank will be used for the upcoming STS-117 flight or whether the tank will be replaced. On April 10, the teams expect to have the necessary data to make that decision and to establish a potential target launch date. All the hail damage spots on the tank have been mapped out. Repair work has been completed on the bottom portion of the tank, the liquid hydrogen section. The damage on the middle part of the tank, or innertank, was superficial and will require little or no repair. There are 2,500 dings, mostly in the top of the tank, that will be reviewed to determine what type of repair technique may be required. During the STS-117's 11-day mission, the six-member crew will install a new truss segment, retract a set of solar arrays and unfold a new set on the starboard side of the station. Lessons learned from two previous missions will provide the astronauts with new techniques and tools to perform their duties. Another experiment measures details about cosmic radiation and its interactions with astronauts’ central nervous systems. The crew also made preparations for Thursday’s and Friday’s installation of network cabling, clearing out stowage gear to provide the necessary access. The crew members also stowed trash and discarded equipment in the ISS Progress 23 cargo ship which is scheduled to undock from the station and burn on re-entry on March 27.

An International Space Station Expedition 14 ARISS school contact has been planned with students at Juvenile Space Club in Tatsuno, Tatsunomachi, Nagano-pref, Japan on 24 March. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 00:39 UTC. The contact will be a direct between stations NA1SS and 8J0T. The contact should be audible in Japan and portions of Eastern Asia. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The participants are expected to conduct the conversation in English. This rather smaller sized town has about 22,000 in population, is located about 2,450ft above sea level and surrounded by several mountains. These mountains are called part of the roof of Japan. In the town, there are 5 elementary schools and one junior high school. Because plenty of nature remains, it is good habitable place, but most children are living in a closed or isolated area, geographically and even from the information lines. Under these surroundings, 20 children, gathered from 3 elementary schools, are now ready to make contact with an astronaut on the ISS, after about 7 months of extra studies. Before August 2006, they did not know that the ISS existed and several astronauts are working in space. Of course there was no opportunity to speak English. After starting extra classroom work, they opened their eyes for space and took in much knowledge concerning the ISS, Space Shuttles, Space and English as well, like a sponge sucks up water. The members consist of 8 girls and 12 boys, who are from 10 years to 12 years old. As you can see, queries made by boys are focused on the Hardware of ISS and many queries by girls are regarding the human life in the ISS. Beginning in April, all 12 year-old children will go to the same junior high school in the town and subjects like natural science and English will be started for them. However, those children, who are member of this Space Club, will enjoy for learning the new subjects because they already have opened the first door by themselves. The extra classroom studies were assisted by 8 Amateur Radio Operators who all of them are quite familiar with the satellite communications. A special lecture, given by JAXA personnel in the September 2006 has brought a confidence for them to start new school life. Students will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. On the ISS, can you watch normal television programs on the earth? 2. In the ISS, is the bath system installed? 3. How do astronauts in the ISS deal with heavy stress built up? 4. How will you do in case of the ISS gets damaged and faces breaking up? 5. On the ISS which country's time zone is used? 6. Display of the fire works are held on the earth. Can you see those fire works from the space? 7. After your return to the earth, what will be the very first thing you do? 8. What is the room temperature inside of the ISS? 9. Do you always wear the same clothes while you are living in the ISS? 10. During your stay for almost half a year in the space, do you not feel lonely? 11. Has the ISS had ever been struck by meteorites? 12. What is the hardest thing about your work on the ISS? 13. How do you dispose of waste from the ISS? 14. Does you body weight fluctuate during your stay in the ISS? 15. Is it possible to make a phone call from the ISS to anyone on the earth? 16. How often do you talk to your family over the phone? 17. Have you ever seen shooting stars from the ISS? 18. Do you have time to read books during your stay in the ISS? 19. Was it your dream to be an astronaut when you were a kid? 20. Do you have any wish to have another variety of space foods in the future, over? 21. Can you now cultivate and eat any vegetable on the ISS? 22. Is it possible to catch other satellite by hand during the space walk? 23. Did you take any special celebration on the last Christmas day in the space? 24. I am 12 years old. If I have decided to be an astronaut in my mind, are there any particular things which I have to do now for it? 25. Why ISS does not maintain more higher altitude from the earth? Image credit: NASA TO VIEW IMAGE GO TO: http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/main/index.html The first solar eclipse of 2007 occurred Sunday and was visible from eastern Asia and parts of northern Alaska, with the largest part of the eclipse for the station taking place at 9:54 p.m. EDT. During that period the space station passed through the Moon's shadow once and lost some ability to generate power. The cumulative sunlight available was 84% compared to the “no eclipse” case, i.e., available sunlight during this orbit was 16% lower. On Monday, Flight Engineer Sunita Williams had an amateur radio ham session with students at East Aurora Middle School in East Aurora, New York. Monday was also Williams’ 100th day in space. She was part of the STS-116 crew that arrived to the station in early December.

SUBMITTED BY ARTHUR N1ORC - AMSAT A/C #3Q1468 *International Space Station Status Report #07-14* *3 p.m. CDT, Friday, March 16, 2007* *Expedition 14 Crew* The Expedition 14 crew was busy this week moving trash into the ISS Progress 23, installing a new window and preparing for upcoming missions to the station. The new window was installed on Wednesday on the port side hatch of the Unity node. It is fitted with a berthing camera system that includes target markings on the outside of the hatch. This will help robotic operators align and dock the station’s new elements. The window’s installation was part of the crew’s work to ready the station’s Pressurized Mating Adapter-3 (PMA-3) for its relocation later this year to Unity’s Earth-facing port. This was the second hatch window installed by an Expedition crew. A similar window was installed by Expedition 6 crew members on Unity’s starboard hatch. Additionally, Commander Michael Lopez-Alegria and Flight Engineer Suni Williams temporarily relocated a “wall” of collapsible water bags to allow them access to PMA-3 and provide access to some of the station’s computer cables, allowing Williams and Lopez-Alegria to install new, upgraded cabling. Lopez-Alegria and Williams emptied all the items stowed in PMA-3 except for a spare Bearing Motor and Roll Ring Module, which was tied down for the adapter’s robotic relocation later this year. The apparatus is used to help the solar arrays swivel, or gimbal, to point to the sun for the generation of electricity. Additional work included preparations for the April 9 arrival of the Expedition 15 crew and U.S. spaceflight participant Charles Simonyi aboard Soyuz TMA-10. The ISS Progress 23 thrusters were fired on Thursday for 12 minutes, 32 seconds to lift the station into the correct orbit for rendezvous and docking of the Soyuz. This orbital boost also provided the correct trajectory for landing of the Expedition 14 crew members and Simonyi aboard Soyuz TMA-9 on April 20. Other tasks included preparation for the March 29 relocation of the Soyuz TMA-9 spacecraft from the Earth-facing port of the Zarya module to the aft port of the Zvezda Service Module. As a result, the Soyuz TMA-10 will not need to perform the maneuver to reach Zarya as its final destination. Also, the crew prepared for the undocking and discarding of the ISS Progress 23 cargo ship, the station’s giant trash can, on March 27. To ready the station for the STS-117 mission, Williams began photography practice for space shuttle Atlantis' Rendezvous Pitch Maneuver. She and her new Expedition 15 crewmates will take photos of Atlantis’ heat shield as it performs the slow, 360-degree nose-forward back flip 600 feet below the station. Flight Engineer Mikhail Tyurin this week completed photographic observations of Earth as part of the Russian “Uragan” Earth-imaging investigation, and monitored radiation inside the station for another set of experiments. He tracks data on three different experiments that monitor cosmic rays and background radiation. Next week, Lopez-Alegria and Williams will conduct some of the work required to install the station’s new integrated station computer network. This new system is ten times faster than the station’s current local area network (LAN) system. It will use Ethernet connectivity over a router through either cable or wireless equipment, thus eliminating drag-through cables from the U.S. segment into the Russian segment. Installation of the LAN originally was planned for the Expedition 15 crew. However, the STS-117 launch delay prompted station managers to advance the LAN work to save time during Expedition 15. The reboost puts the station in the proper orbit when Expedition 15 arrives at the station to begin its increment in April. Two weeks later the crew will also relocate their Soyuz vehicle to another port allowing Expedition 15 to dock in their new Soyuz TMA-10. The Expedition 15 crew launches from Russia on April 7 and will dock to the station on April 9. Expedition 14 will leave the station and return home in its Soyuz TMA-9 on April 20. The Progress 23 cargo capsule is being loaded with trash and discarded items as the crew readies it to undock then burn up in Earth’s atmosphere March 27. The Progress 23 initially delivered gear and supplies for the crew, but its removal makes way for future deliveries in Progress vehicles. The station crew is also readying Pressurized Mating Adapter-3 for relocation to the Unity Node’s Earth facing port during Expedition 15. Node 2, a U.S. module, will take its place at the end of the Destiny laboratory later this year during shuttle mission STS-120.

An International Space Station Expedition 14 ARISS school contact has been planned with students at University School, Shaker Heights, Ohio, USA on 16 March. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 16:15 UTC. The contact will be a direct between stations NA1SS and K8RBV. The contact should be audible in the central and Eastern North America. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The participants are expected to conduct the conversation in English. EchoLink - The audio from this contact will be available on the EchoLink *AMSAT* (node 101 377) and the *JK1ZRW* (node 277 208) conference rooms. Please connect to the *JK1ZRW* server to keep the load light on the *AMSAT* server. This will ensure good audio quality for all listeners. University School is a K-12 independent (private) school for boys near Cleveland, Ohio with two campuses. Our campus in Shaker Heights (grades K-8) has been operating a full size space shuttle simulator mockup since 1990. The simulator includes the flight and mid decks of the space shuttle, a mission control area, a nodule of the International Space Station, and even an airplane simulator. There are approximately 440 boys on our K-8 campus, all of whom seem very excited about the opportunity this campus has to talk to the International Space Station. The school was founded in 1890 and prepares boys for admission into college. The Shaker Heights campus is located on 32 acres in Shaker Heights, an eastern Cleveland suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. Shaker Heights is a residential community noted for having two rapid transit lines, tree-lined streets, and beautiful lakes and parks. Students will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What thing most surprised you in space - something you didn't expect? 2. Are there any fears that you got when you went to the ISS? 3. Can you see the constellations from the space station? 4. If you were on the ISS alone and none of the space suits were working and you had enough power to call, who would you call? 5. What does it feel like to hold the world record for the longest space walk for women? 6. Would you ever bring your dog into space in an experiment or just to be with you? 7. What does it feel like to be in the middle of a launch? 8. We are studying the nemotoids on the ISS through the Orion Quest Program. Have you had any contact with this experiment? 9. How will this mission help promote future space expeditions? 10. Does music sound different in space? 11. Are zero gravity conditions as fun as they look? 12. What is the one thing you miss the most in space? 13. Is it hard to sleep in space? 14. How does it feel to re-enter the earth's atmosphere. 15. What do you do if you get bored? 16. Do you ever get motion sickness when you're flying in space? 17. What does it feel like to be in zero gravity? 18. What is your favorite in space activity not including EVA's? 19. Why do you wear white space suits? 20. How much contact do you personally have with any school related projects on the space Station? 21. How will this mission be a model for new missions to look back and make changes for the future? 22. During free time do astronauts listen to music? 23. When you look out into space do you see something that looks like a television picture or does it have real depth like a 3-D picture? 24. How many times have you been to space? Thanks to many of you who tuned in on Friday morning to listen to Mission Viejo's second attempt to contact the Commander Michael Lopez-Alegria on the International Space Station! The direct connection to the station was established at 7:23 AM PST and lasted for seven full minutes before the station dropped behind our local Saddleback Mountains. Since the event, we have updated the website to include new photos, an MP3 recording of the contact, video recordings straight from the contact room, and a link to the article written about it in the Orange County Register last Saturday.
