ISS equipment for VHF and UHF

Greetings to the group First, a million thanks to all who make ISS amateur radio possible. I am grateful Pardon the idea, but how about sending up a less complicated dual band VHF/UHF rig to replace the D700 instead of going to all the trouble of sending up bandaids and software. The D700 has had a long useful life and replacement may not be a bad idea. The old ericsson equipment and original TNC could be used for packet digipeating. I use a yaesu FT-8800 dual band VHF/UHF rig that doesnt require a computer to program, just the front panel buttons. It is also capable of cross-band operation and has selectable wide or narrow FM. The wide FM transmission might be easier to recieve on the ground. I chose this rig carefully before buying for satellite operation. Food for thought, 73, pat

ISS SECOND WEEK CONTINUES

SUBMITTED BY ARTHUR N1ORC - AMSAT A/C #31468 *Science and Maintenance Continue During Second Week of Expedition 15* - MAY 8TH, 2007 Marking the second week working together, the Expedition 15 crew wrapped up a week of various maintenance tasks, science experiments and preparations for the May 15 arrival of the Progress 25 supply ship. The week included work on a wide array of science experiments. Flight engineer Suni Williams completed the fifth run of the Elastic Memory Composite Hinge experiment which studies the performance of a new hinge composite in space. Williams also did a test run of a handheld device for rapid detection of biological and chemical substances on board the station. This study is meant to provide an early warning system to protect the health and safety of station crew members. NASA astronaut Michael Foale and NASA Administrator Mike Griffin hosted the queen and introduced her to the Expedition 15 crew members as they orbited the Earth. Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and flight engineers Oleg Kotov and Suni Williams greeted Queen Elizabeth from the International Space Station. The crew members each spoke briefly to the queen describing life on the space station and the importance of human space flight.

Space Day 2007

http://n4hy.smugmug.com/gallery/2819832#150794625 The crowd was large, enthusiastic, and makes you wonder what in the HECK is the matter with politicians not understanding that this interest in space is NOT limited to people who are old enough to remember who Neil Armstrong is. They are not lily white. They are not exclusively American. They are "every man" or "every person" is you insist. The young man in this photo had a great time talking to Sunny Williams (as did the others in the photos) and the T Shirt you see him wearing while standing with his beaming family was his winning design in the T shirt contest. The parents were jumping up and down clapping, crying their eyes out, and in general, just beside themselves with emotion watching their kids talk to Sunny. Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and Flight Engineer Oleg Kotov have been measuring their calf volume and body mass. They have also been counteracting the effects of microgravity with preventive health maintenance fitness tests on a stationary cycle ergometer. They will continue these tests on a treadmill Tuesday. The cosmonauts also worked inside the Progress cargo craft dismantling gear for return to Earth on the space shuttle. Flight Engineer Suni Williams activated and conducted operations on an Air Force Research Laboratory Experiment that is studying elastic memory technology. She also gathered air samples for bacterial and fungal analysis. ARISS event - Escola Secundaria de Estarreja, Estarreja, Portugal, Wednesday (May 09) 15:06 UTC

An International Space Station Expedition 15 ARISS school contact has been planned with students at Escola Secundaria de Estarreja, Estarreja, Portugal on 09 May. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 15:06 UTC. The contact will be a direct between stations NA1SS and CT6ESE. The contact should be audible in western portions of Europe. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The participants are expected to conduct the conversation in English. The Estarreja Secondary School is one of the largest in Central Portugal with 1200 students and 57 classes that range from the scientific areas of IT, Mechanics, Electronics and Robotics Engineering, to Chemistry and Biology. The school also has a tradition in the teaching of foreign languages with departments of English, German, French and Spanish. There are classes from the 7th to the 12th grade (pre-university) and the school issues European Union Level 4 professional qualifications in the Engineering classes. The school also hosts an Aveiro University branch with a class of 20 students from Electronics and Automation Engineering. Students will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What do you have to do to become an astronaut? 2. What do you feel during the lift-off and the trip to the ISS? 3. What is the sensation of being in orbit? 4. What kind of experiments are you doing right now? 5. How is it like to experience a zero-gravity environment? 6. What limitations do you have while you are in Space? 7. Have you done any EVA during this mission? If yes, for what purpose? 8. How do you spend your spare time? 9. How many astronauts are on-board right now? 10. What radio and antenna equipment are you using to communicate with us right now? 11. Have you faced any problem that could endanger your mission? 12. How is it like to have visitors on-board with you and how do they react to life on-board the ISS? 13. How do you get protected from solar flares and radiation? What is the temperature inside the ISS? 14. When you come back to Earth, do you feel like you have to relearn how to live here? 15. Is there something that you really miss from Earth? 16. What would you say to a little kid who wants to become an astronaut? 17. What is the sensation when you are looking down to Earth? 18. What are the dangers while you are in Space? 19. If traveling throughout the Universe were possible, would you offer yourself to go there? 20. In your opinion, where do humans and the life on Earth come from? Do you believe in life somewhere in the infinity of the Universe? Please note, the amateur equipment on the ISS is not functioning in the automatic modes properly and may be silent more than usual.
