ISS Crew Prepares for Soyuz Move

On Tuesday, the crew members tagged up with Russian flight controllers to review the relocation of the docked Soyuz TMA-10 spacecraft Thursday. The crew will move the Soyuz to the aft port of the Zvezda service module, freeing up the Zarya nadir, or Earth-facing, port for the arrival of Expedition 16 on Oct. 12. + Read more about the Soyuz move <http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/expeditions/expedition15/soyuzmov…> Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and Flight Engineer Oleg Kotov conducted a motion control system test on the Soyuz Tuesday. Flight Engineer Clay Anderson checked the seals on the hatches of the U.S. segment of the station. The hatches will be closed during Thursday's Soyuz move to protect against depressurization. Later, Kotov and Anderson moved the station's robotic arm, Canadarm2, into position to view the retraction of the Zarya module's starboard and port solar array wings on Friday and Saturday. While space shuttle Discovery is docked to the station during the STS-120 mission in October, the station's starboard radiators will be deployed, followed by the port radiators shortly after Discovery departs. To avoid contact with the radiators, the Zarya arrays must be completely retracted. On Monday afternoon, the Zvezda service module's engines were fired for about two minutes to raise the space station's altitude by an average of about 5.3 nautical miles. On Monday afternoon, the Zvezda Service Module's engines were fired to raise the space station to the correct altitude for the upcoming Soyuz TMA-11 and Space Shuttle Discovery dockings in October. Earlier Monday, Flight Engineer Clay Anderson conducted a ham radio session with students at the Heidelberg University for Applied Sciences in Heidelberg, Germany. Over the weekend, Anderson conducted a "Saturday Science" session with the Analyzing Interferometer for Ambient Air (ANITA) payload. Developed by the European Space Agency, ANITA determines concentrations of up to 32 different trace gases in the station's atmosphere. With the Progress 25 undocking on Sept. 18, the aft port of the Zvezda service module is open and ready for the relocation of the Soyuz TMA-10 on Thursday. NASA's Expedition 16 Commander Peggy Whitson, Soyuz Commander and Flight Engineer Yuri Malenchenko and Malaysian spaceflight participant Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor are set to launch Oct. 10 at 9:21 a.m. EDT from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Their Soyuz TMA-11 craft is planned to dock to the station on Oct. 12. Shukor will fly to the station under an agreement with the Russian Federal Space Agency. NASA Flight Engineer Clay Anderson, who has been on the station since June, will remain with Whitson and Malenchenko until the arrival of space shuttle Discovery on the STS-120 mission. NASA astronaut Dan Tani will arrive on that mission to replace Anderson, who will journey home on Discovery. Expedition 15 Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin, Soyuz Commander and Flight Engineer Oleg Kotov and Shukor will return to Earth Oct. 21 at 6:32 a.m. in their Soyuz TMA-10 spacecraft now docked to the station. An International Space Station Expedition 15 ARISS school contact has been planned with participants at Art and Pat Goforth Elementary, League City, Texas USA on 26 Sep. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 16:52 UTC. The contact will be a telebridge between stations NA1SS and WH6PN. The contact should be audible in Hawaii. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. In addition, the audio should be available via IRLP and EchoLink. The participants are expected to conduct the conversation in English. Goforth Elementary, one of 24 elementary schools in Clear Creek ISD, is a K-5th grade campus of approximately 915 students. We are an Exemplary rated campus. Our beautiful elementary school is named for longtime Clear Creek ISD educators Art and Pat Goforth. Mrs. Goforth was the first female high school assistant principal in Clear Creek ISD. Mr. Goforth was the first assistant principal in the district and served as Clear Creek High principal for 10 years. Clay Anderson, ISS astronaut, is the parent of one of our First Grade students. His daughter will be asking the first question during the contact. Her class and the 5th grade classes have been working hard developing questions for our upcoming contact with Clay Anderson.
