SUBMITTED BY ARTHUR N1ORC - AMSAT A/C#31468 *Soyuz Move Caps Busy Week Aboard Space Station* The Expedition 15 crew members enjoyed a light-duty day Friday aboard the International Space Station after a busy week culminating in the relocation of their Soyuz spacecraft on Thursday. The Zarya module's starboard solar array wing was retracted Friday morning, with the retraction of the port solar array planned for Saturday. The Zarya arrays must be completely retracted to avoid contact with the station's radiators. The starboard radiators will be deployed during STS-120 space shuttle mission in October, followed by the port radiators after the shuttle departs. The crew moved the Soyuz TMA-10 spacecraft on Thursday to free up the Zarya nadir, or Earth-facing, port for the arrival of Expedition 16 on Oct. 12. After the Soyuz undocked at 3:20 p.m. EDT, Flight Engineer Oleg Kotov piloted the spacecraft 80 feet for a 27-minute trip to the aft docking port of the Zvezda service module. + Read more about the Soyuz move <http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/expeditions/expedition15/soyuzmov…> On Monday afternoon, the Zvezda service module's engines were fired for about two minutes to raise the space station's altitude an average of about 5.3 nautical miles. SUBMITTED BY ARTHUR N1ORC - AMSAT A/C #31468 *Discovery Prepares to Roll to the Pad* In preparation for the targeted Oct. 23 launch, Discovery is set to roll from the Vehicle Assembly Building out to the Launch Pad 39A aboard the crawler transporter this weekend. Earlier in the week, the orbiter was attached to the external fuel tank and twin solid rocket boosters atop the mobile launch platform. In the predawn hours Thursday, the payload canister for mission STS-120 arrived at Launch Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. The Italian-built U.S. Harmony module destined for the International Space Center will be transferred to Discovery's payload bay once the space shuttle reaches the pad. An International Space Station Expedition 15 ARISS school contact has been planned with participants at Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, Washington, DC., USA on 29 Sep. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 16:28 UTC. The contact will be a telebridge between stations NA1SS and WH6PN. The contact should be audible in Hawaii. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. In addition, the audio should be available via IRLP and EchoLink. The participants are expected to conduct the conversation in English. The Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum maintains the largest collection of historic air and spacecraft in the world. It is also a vital center for research into the history, science, and technology of aviation and space flight, as well as planetary science and terrestrial geology and geophysics. This ARISS contact is part of the family day events Commemorating 50 Years in Space. This event is made possible by the generous support of the Charles Simonyi Fund for Arts and Sciences. This will be a live public event. Persons selected from the audience (mainly students) will be asking the questions so no advance copy is available. Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin spent Wednesday morning working with PLASMA-ISS, a Russian experiment that measures the plasma environment on the exterior of the International Space Station. Yurchikhin later joined with Flight Engineer Oleg Kotov to close the hatches between the Progress cargo craft and the Pirs docking compartment. Also on Wednesday, Flight Engineer Clay Anderson talked by ham radio with students at Art and Pat Goforth Elementary School in League City, Texas. On Tuesday, the crew members tagged up with Russian flight controllers to review the relocation of the docked Soyuz TMA-10 spacecraft Thursday. The crew will move the Soyuz to the aft port of the Zvezda service module, freeing up the Zarya nadir, or Earth-facing, port for the arrival of Expedition 16 on Oct. 12. + Read more about the Soyuz move <http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/expeditions/expedition15/soyuzmov…> Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and Flight Engineer Oleg Kotov conducted a motion control system test on the Soyuz Tuesday. Flight Engineer Clay Anderson checked the seals on the hatches of the U.S. segment of the station. The hatches will be closed during Thursday's Soyuz move to protect against depressurization. Later, Kotov and Anderson moved the station's robotic arm, Canadarm2, into position to view the retraction of the Zarya module's starboard and port solar array wings on Friday and Saturday. While space shuttle Discovery is docked to the station during the STS-120 mission in October, the station's starboard radiators will be deployed, followed by the port radiators shortly after Discovery departs. To avoid contact with the radiators, the Zarya arrays must be completely retracted. On Monday afternoon, the Zvezda service module's engines were fired for about two minutes to raise the space station's altitude by an average of about 5.3 nautical miles. On Monday afternoon, the Zvezda Service Module's engines were fired to raise the space station to the correct altitude for the upcoming Soyuz TMA-11 and Space Shuttle Discovery dockings in October. Earlier Monday, Flight Engineer Clay Anderson conducted a ham radio session with students at the Heidelberg University for Applied Sciences in Heidelberg, Germany. Over the weekend, Anderson conducted a "Saturday Science" session with the Analyzing Interferometer for Ambient Air (ANITA) payload. Developed by the European Space Agency, ANITA determines concentrations of up to 32 different trace gases in the station's atmosphere. With the Progress 25 undocking on Sept. 18, the aft port of the Zvezda service module is open and ready for the relocation of the Soyuz TMA-10 on Thursday. NASA's Expedition 16 Commander Peggy Whitson, Soyuz Commander and Flight Engineer Yuri Malenchenko and Malaysian spaceflight participant Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor are set to launch Oct. 10 at 9:21 a.m. EDT from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Their Soyuz TMA-11 craft is planned to dock to the station on Oct. 12. Shukor will fly to the station under an agreement with the Russian Federal Space Agency. NASA Flight Engineer Clay Anderson, who has been on the station since June, will remain with Whitson and Malenchenko until the arrival of space shuttle Discovery on the STS-120 mission. An International Space Station Expedition 15 ARISS school contact has been planned with participants at Art and Pat Goforth Elementary, League City, Texas USA on 26 Sep. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 16:52 UTC. The contact will be a telebridge between stations NA1SS and WH6PN. The contact should be audible in Hawaii. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. In addition, the audio should be available via IRLP and EchoLink. The participants are expected to conduct the conversation in English. Goforth Elementary, one of 24 elementary schools in Clear Creek ISD, is a K-5th grade campus of approximately 915 students. We are an Exemplary rated campus. Our beautiful elementary school is named for longtime Clear Creek ISD educators Art and Pat Goforth. Mrs. Goforth was the first female high school assistant principal in Clear Creek ISD. Mr. Goforth was the first assistant principal in the district and served as Clear Creek High principal for 10 years. Clay Anderson, ISS astronaut, is the parent of one of our First Grade students. His daughter will be asking the first question during the contact. Her class and the 5th grade classes have been working hard developing questions for our upcoming contact with Clay Anderson. Earlier this month, the station crew also viewed Hurricanes Felix and Humberto as they were churning in the Gulf of Mexico. A station reboost is planned for Sept. 24. The orbital firing will put the ISS in the correct attitude for the upcoming Soyuz TMA-11 and Space Shuttle Discovery dockings in October. With the Progress 25 undocking on Sept. 18, the aft port of the Zvezda service module is open and ready for the relocation of the Soyuz TMA-10 on Sept. 27. The relocation opens up the Zarya nadir, or earth-facing, port for the arrival of Expedition 16 in its Soyuz TMA-11 on Oct. 12. Discovery arrives Oct. 25 on the STS-120 mission bringing with it the Harmony Node 2. Harmony enables the station to add two new European and Japanese space laboratories on upcoming missions. Aboard the station, Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and flight engineers Oleg Kotov and Clay Anderson continue packing items for return to Earth aboard Discovery. The crew members also measured their body mass. An International Space Station Expedition 15 ARISS school contact has been planned with children at the One Stop Richmond Hill Community Center, Richmond Hill, New York, USA on 07 Aug. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 13:25 UTC. The contact will be a telebridge between stations NA1SS and WH6PN. The contact should be audible in Hawaii. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. In addition, the audio should be available via IRLP and EchoLink. The participants are expected to conduct the conversation in English. Richmond Hill Community Center began as a block association 37 years ago. It expanded to become the One Stop Richmond Hill Community Center and serves the neighborhood with many programs including children's summer camp, citizenship and English as a Second Language courses, after school tutoring for neighborhood children, Mommy and Me preschool programs, Videoconference and Computer Technology after school and summer program for elementary school children, local civilian patrol and a Community Emergency Response Team program (CERT). The samples are part of a year-long experiment called Surface, Water and Air Bio-characterization, or SWAB. Once these tests are concluded on Saturday and the repairs have been determined successful, the way would be cleared for Discovery's move on Sunday from its processing hangar at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center to the Vehicle Assembly Building. Depending on how processing operations go, rollout to the launch pad could take place one week later. One of Discovery’s struts, which act as shock absorbers during the shuttle's landing, began leaking hydraulic fluid last week. Once Discovery is in the Vehicle Assembly Building, it will be attached to its external fuel tank and two solid rocket boosters for its upcoming mission, STS-120, to the International Space Station. An International Space Station Expedition 15 ARISS school contact has been planned with participants at Pueblo Magnet High School, Tucson, Arizona USA on 21 Sep. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 15:04 UTC. The contact will be a direct between stations NA1SS and KD7RPP. The contact should be audible in most of western North America. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. In addition, the audio should be available via IRLP and EchoLink. The participants are expected to conduct the conversation in English. The school's name, Pueblo Magnet High School, might connote a "highly developed and worldly" school. Pueblo is anything but "complicated or finely experienced and aware". Pueblo High School may be more accurately described as a pueblo: an intimate village whose inhabitants most often learn about the larger world only as it comes to them." The bias of being a "south side school" has a negative effect on teen's self-esteem, teachers' morale and the potential for our program. A large percentage of the students are basically poor, coming from undereducated environments. Administration, teachers and staff at Pueblo Magnet High School work very hard to build a positive reputation that is challenged daily by the reality of neighborhood violence, dropout statistics, low socioeconomic status and low achievement. Touch the Sky is a project that has been underway for almost two years and that has as a primary objective, Pueblo Magnet High School students communicating, via amateur radio technologies, with astronauts aboard the International Space Station. Pueblo students are already learning to apply their daily curriculum lessons by applying them to their study of electronics, Federal Communication Rules and Regulations and amateur radio operating procedures in preparation for their amateur radio license exams. Presently there are five student licensed amateur radio operators, one at the General Class level. There are 27 other members in the Pueblo High School Amateur Radio Club who will become licensed radio operators by April 2008. Pueblo High School is a registered school with the American Radio Relay League as one of only 200 schools nationwide in their "Big Project" Program. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How many times have you orbited earth since you boarded the ISS? 2. Based on your present space experiences, do you believe there is human life on another planet? 3. What is there to do in the ISS? 4. Why did you want to be an astronaut? 5. SUBMITTED BY ARTHUR N1ORC - AMSAT A/C #31468 *Technicians to Begin Discovery Strut Repairs * 17 SEPTEMBER 2007 NASA technicians will begin repair work Wednesday on a leaking hydraulic seal in space shuttle Discovery’s right main-gear strut. The struts act as shock absorbers during the shuttle's landing. Shuttle managers made the decision to go ahead with the repairs during a meeting Monday afternoon. Discovery had been scheduled to roll over Wednesday from its processing hanger to the Vehicle Assembly Building. There it will be attached to its external fuel tank and two solid rocket boosters for its upcoming mission, STS-120, to the International Space Station. A new rollover date will be set after technicians begin work on the strut and determine what needs to be fixed and how long that will take. To remove the main landing gear strut and replace seals requires disconnecting and replacing the brakes and tires, disconnecting and reconnecting instruments and other requirements to allow access to the strut. Managers will assess the ongoing repair work to decide how it might affect Discovery’s Oct. 23 target launch date. At the same meeting, managers also officially decided to add an additional spacewalk, bringing the total to five. On the extra spacewalk, Missions Specialists Scott Parazynski and Douglas Wheelock will test tile heat shield repair techniques, extending the mission to 14 days.

The maneuver has been cancelled and the station is all clear. Next week on Sept. 24 the International Space Station will undergo an orbital reboost. The reboost will maximize rendezvous and docking opportunities for an upcoming Soyuz launch and the launch of Space Shuttle Discovery on mission STS-120 in late October. The Integrated Station LAN (ISL) was completely installed over the weekend and is up and running. An International Space Station Expedition 15 ARISS school contact has been planned with participants at Mitchell Elementary School, Ann Arbor, Michigan USA on 17 Sep. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 13:39 UTC. The contact will be a direct between stations NA1SS and N0EFT. The contact should be audible in most of eastern North America. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. In addition, the audio should be available via IRLP and EchoLink. The participants are expected to conduct the conversation in English. Mitchell Elementary school is a NASA Explorer School located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Our science and math programs integrate units that are related to NASA projects. The radio contact with the space station will enhance and increase the relevance of our students' academic activities. The experience will help enable our students to see themselves as future scientists or astronauts. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What kind of food do you eat in space? 2. Is it hard to be in space for so long? 3. Have you ever taken a space walk? What was it like? 4. Once inside, Discovery will be lifted and then joined to the waiting boosters and tank on the mobile launch platform. Flight Engineer Clay Anderson completed a check of the station's emergency lighting system and installed handrail fasteners in the Unity node early Thursday. After lunch, Anderson returned to work on the Integrated Station LAN (ISL) network system. He installed network cables, connected the router and worked on the External Wireless Instrumentation System. The ISL provides network connections between the Destiny lab, the Unity node, the Quest airlock and the service module. It eliminates drag-through cables in hatches, will be up to ten times faster than the current LAN and has provisions for future expansion. Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and Flight Engineer Oleg Kotov continue to stow unneeded hardware and trash in the docked ISS Progress 25 cargo craft. A voice over the loudspeakers counted down as the crowd waited in anticipation outside the "Mission: SPACE" attraction at Walt Disney World's Epcot Center in Orlando. Finally, with a thundering /whoosh/ and an explosion of smoke and confetti, a glass plaque bearing the inspirational words of astronaut Barbara R. Morgan was unveiled as onlookers cheered. "Reach for your dreams...the sky is no limit," states the plaque outside the ride that takes guests on a simulated journey into space. Mission Specialist Barbara R. Morgan, Alvin Drew and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Dave Williams. Local fourth- and fifth-graders joined students from the Oak Ridge High School Aviation and Aerospace Academy Magnet Program, and the Osceola High School Aviation Academy. One student asked which was the most difficult and challenging obstacle the astronauts faced. "Everybody has a different challenge or obstacle that they have to overcome," answered Mastracchio. "One of the things that I ran into is when I graduated from college I wanted to be a military pilot, so I went to join the Air Force or the Navy or the Marines." Mastracchio went on to explain that because he has to wear glasses or contacts to improve his vision, he couldn't be a pilot, so he decided instead to work for NASA as an engineer. The astronauts answer questions from the student audience."I kept putting in astronaut application after astronaut application, and eventually got selected as an astronaut and got to fly in space two times," Mastracchio said. "So even though you meet obstacles, there are always ways around those obstacles to achieve your goals and make your dreams come true." Photo credit: NASA/George Shelton Education has been a strong focus for the STS-118 crew members, who participated in a series of question-and-answer sessions with students on Earth during the 13-day mission in August 2007. The assembly flight to the International Space Station was highlighted by the installation of the two-ton S5 truss segment, a high-tech girder that extends the length of the station's backbone by 11 feet. The astronauts also activated the new Station-to-Shuttle Power Transfer System, which allows a docked shuttle to draw power from the outpost, making more time for station construction. While at Disney, the astronauts also took the time to answer questions from enthusiastic park guests. Five-year-old Kaitlyn Brown was visiting the theme park with her father, Clyde, who happens to be a NASA contractor employee at the agency's Langley Research Center in Virginia. Kaitlyn asked how long it takes to adapt to space. "It's different for every person," Morgan answered, remembering that she felt upside-down at first. "But I got used to it, and that's when the fun starts." "I was out of my mind when I saw the astronauts!" the second-grader exclaimed breathlessly afterward. The boy's mother, Helene Feit-Katz, said they were simply visiting the Magic Kingdom on vacation when they found out the STS-118 crew was there. "It's a pleasant surprise. I never expected this," she said. "It's amazing. You don't know what this does for Ariel." Retired Air Force Col. Pamela A. Melroy will command the STS-120 mission to take the Node 2 connecting module to the station. Melroy, a veteran shuttle pilot, is the second woman to command a shuttle. Marine Corps Col. George D. Zamka will serve as pilot. The flight's mission specialists will be Scott E. Parazynski, Army Col. Douglas H. Wheelock, Stephanie D. Wilson and Paolo A. Nespoli, a European Space Agency astronaut from Italy. Zamka, Wheelock and Nespoli will be making their first spaceflight. Expedition 15/16 Flight Engineer Clayton Anderson will return to Earth from the space station aboard shuttle mission STS-120. That flight will carry his replacement, Daniel Tani, to the station. Credit: NASA TO VIEW IMAGE GO TO: http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/main/index.html The Expedition 15 crew members aboard the International Space Station worked Tuesday on station maintenance and gathering items for disposal on a Progress cargo craft. Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and Flight Engineer Oleg Kotov stowed some unneeded hardware in the docked ISS Progress 25 cargo craft. Flight Engineer Clay Anderson gathered trash for disposal in the Progress as well. The Progress will undock from the station Sept. 18 and burn up in the Earth's atmosphere. Anderson also serviced a European Space Agency plant growth experiment in the European Modular Cultivation System. The experiment will grow Arabidopsis thaliana, a small flowering plant related to cabbage and mustard, in orbit for three generations. Discovery Targeted for October Liftoff

In the nearby Orbiter Processing Facility, Discovery's payload bay doors were closed as preparations continue in advance of the shuttle's move to the giant assembly building. The main payload for the mission, the U.S. Harmony Node 2 module for the International Space Station, will be loaded inside Discovery at the launch pad. Credit: NASA - TO VIEW IMAGE GO TO:http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/main/index.html The Expedition 15 crew members kicked off a new week of science and maintenance aboard the International Space Station as they prepare for next week's departure of a Progress cargo craft and the arrival Space Shuttle Discovery in October. In the Destiny lab, Flight Engineer Clay Anderson worked with the computers in the EXPRESS rack, swapping out a laptop computer and loading software. The EXPRESS rack is a standardized payload rack system that transports, stores and supports experiments aboard the space station. Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and Flight Engineer Oleg Kotov worked with PILOT, a Russian experiment that tests the cosmonauts' proficiency in manual spacecraft control during long-duration spaceflights. Yurchikhin later stowed unneeded items in the docked ISS Progress 25 cargo craft. The Progress will undock from the station Sept. 18 and burn up in the Earth's atmosphere. Engineers in Moscow and Houston are performing safety analyzes for the upcoming retraction of Zarya's solar array wings. While Space Shuttle Discovery is docked to the station during the STS-120 mission, the station's starboard radiators will be deployed, followed by the port radiators shortly after Discovery departs. To avoid physical contact with the radiators, the Zarya arrays must be completely retracted. The date for the retraction has not been determined. Over the weekend, Anderson conducted a "Saturday Science" session with the Smoke Aerosol Measurement Experiment (SAME).
