An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Glenmore Christian Academy, Calgary, AB, Canada on 14 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 16:01 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and VE6BGC. The contact should be audible over portions of western Canada and the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Glenmore Christian Academy was founded in 1980 in Calgary, Alberta; it is an alternate school within the Palliser School District. There are 641 students in Kindergarten to Grade 9. The students in Grades 1 - 5 and invited guests will be participating in this ARISS event and the conversation with Dr. Thirsk will indeed be a highlight. Our day will also include a presentation entitled, "Journey to the International Space Station", created and narrated by GCA teacher and Dr. Thirsk's sister, Bev Thirsk, chronicling her 10 day Soyuz TMA-15 pre-launch, launch, post-launch activities in Moscow, Russia, and Baikonur, Kazakhstan. Students will respond to the day's events with follow-up composition, art, and music activities. The students will dress in space-themed costumes, enjoy a special related lunch treat, and receive Expedition 20 gifts from the Canadian Space Agency. This ARISS event and Expedition 20/21 theme will be the springboard for continued activities in the classrooms culminating in a celebration of Dr. Thirsk's successful mission and landing in November. Students will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What does no gravity feel like? 2. What kind of experiments are you involved in? 3. Do you get your own bedroom? 4. What and how do you eat? 5. Did you bring your Bible? 6. Has an asteroid ever hit the ISS? 7. What is a normal day like? 8. How do you exercise without gravity? 9. Is it hard to control Dextre? 10. How many rooms are in the space station? 11. Is there a day and night in space? 12. What is the thing you miss the most? 13. Do you have another mission planned after this one? 14. Are you ever scared? 15. How dark and cold is it in space? 16. How fast does the ISS travel? 17. What does the world look like from space? 18. What things you can do in space, but not on Earth? 19. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Boundary Beach Elementary, Delta, BC, Canada on 13 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 17:10 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and VE7LHM. The contact should be audible over western Canada. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. BBES was closed down at the end of June, so the 23 former students are now attending different schools. They were all very excited about studying space together during the spring and they are very excited about getting to talk to real astronauts. During their science unit in the spring they made alka seltzer rockets, submitted rocks to Rock Around the World, visited the MacMillan Planetarium and saw Dr. Thirsk's wax model hanging in the exploration hall. The Grade 2 and 3 students were able to make their own space station at school, 2 modules connected by a tube. They created spaces for living, working and exercising, recognizing how important it is to exercise while in space. Since they have all been following the mission of Dr. Bob Thirsk, all questions are addressed to Bob. Students will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What does Bob call his remote control robot and what will the robot do on Mars? 2. How do you weigh yourself? 3. What do you miss most (other than your loved ones)? 4. What is your favourite part of the mission so far? 5. How much fuel does it take to lift off and attain orbit? 6. What effects do you see from global warming? 7. How much sleep do you get daily? 8. Does gas cause any problems on board? 9. Where do you go when you get bored? 10. How do the planets look from the space station? 11. What is your favourite space food and what kind of treats do you get? 12. Are you all nice to each other? 13. Did you take DVD equipment with you to watch movies or do you get to watch TV? 14. What does earth and outer space look like from there? 15. Can you see more stars than on earth? 16. What was the most amazing sight you've seen since you've been up there? 17. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Belmont Elementary, Langley, BC, Canada on 09 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 20:20 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and VA7GAB. The contact should be audible over western Canada. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English or French. Ecole Belmont Elementary School is a dual track (French / English) school with approximately 530 students. We are located in Brookswood a suburb of Langley, 52 Kms east of Vancouver. As part of our back to school "Week Of Welcome", we undertook a school wide focus on "Space". Students learned about Canada's contribution to space exploration, the Canadian astronauts, the construction of the ISS as well as many other related things. Students created event patches and a myriad of other artwork in preparation for the upcoming event. Participants will ask as many of the following questions (translated) as time allows: 1. It is 10 seconds before takeoff... What are you thinking? 2. When you get back on earth is it hard to get used to gravity again and how do you prepare for this transition? 3. What do you get to eat up there and what is your favourite thing to eat? 4. What inspired you to become an astronaut? 5. What is the scariest thing that you have had to do while is space? 6. How do you know when it is time to go to sleep? 7. Approximately how many scientific discoveries have you made aboard the space station and what were they? 8. Are you ever worried something bad might happen to the space station? 9. Pourquoi est ce que les personnes vont dans espace? Why are people going into space? 10. What happens if one or two crew members gets seriously sick? 11. What is your favourite thing about being in space? 12. What is the hardest experiment you have done while on the space station? 13. Are there colours in space that you've never seen on earth? 14. Were you scared of the speed of the rocket ship that took you into space? 15. Have you had any health problems aboard the ISS? 16. Do you get dizzy going around the earth? 17. Will learning French make it easier for me to become an astronaut?
