Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report December 14, 2009 1. Upcoming School Contact An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Istituto Comprensivo di Govone -Scuola Secondaria di primo grado "Nino Costa" di Priocca in Priocca, Cuneo, Italy on Monday, December 14 at 08:30 UTC. Students have been working on a mission to Mars project which has engaged them in technology, engineering and problem solving. The contact will be integrated into this project through which students will learn more about the effects of space travel and microgravity. 2. Astronaut Training Status - Simulated Contact Successful A simulated contact took place on Tuesday, December 8 between Deer Creek Elementary School in Bailey, Colorado and astronaut Tracy Caldwell, KF5DBF at Johnson Space Center. This training session was a terrestrial-based amateur radio contact using Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) equivalent equipment. Deer Creek enjoyed its session so much that it plans to apply for a contact with an on-orbit astronaut. 3. Maxim Suraev Participates in ARISS Contact Flight Engineer Maxim Suraev was scheduled to participate in two Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contacts with Russian schools this past week. The first contact was held with Noginsk High School students on Thursday, December 10 and was successful. The second session was scheduled with schoolchildren from Zvezdniy Gorodok in Star City, Russia, on Friday, December 11. Its status is unknown at this time. 4. Italian School Contact to be Rescheduled An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was scheduled for students from Scuola Primaria De Gasperi in Noicattaro, Bari, Italy on Saturday, December 12. Due to technical difficulties, the contact was not successful. The school will be rescheduled for another session in the near future. 5. Moscow Aviation Institute Experiment Activated Cosmonaut Maxim Suraev activated the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI-75) experiment onboard the ISS on Wednesday - Friday, December 9 - 11 from approximately 07:00 to 11:00 UTC. Slow Scan Television (SSTV) images of Earth were downlinked to ground stations. Images received were archived to the ARISS SSTV Gallery: http://www.amsat.org/amsat/ariss/SSTV/ 6. CQ VHF Magazine Runs ARISS Article The Fall issue of CQ VHF magazine contained an article about the ARISS International Meeting that was held this year in the Netherlands on June 18 - 19. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Istituto Comprensivo di Govone-Scuola Secondaria di primo grado "Nino Costa" di Priocca, Priocca, Cuneo, Italy on 14 Dec. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 08:30 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and IK1SLD. The contact should be audible over Italy. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The two Junior High schools "Nino Costa" of Priocca and "T.L. Dalmasso" of Govone are an integral part of the Comprehensive School of Govone in the province of Cuneo. The municipal territories of the Comprehensive School of Govone are situated on the left bank of the river Tanaro; this district, which is a hill country, is called "Roero" and it's famous for its fine wines. The inhabitants live mostly in the plain where the schools can also be found while on the top of the hill there is the old town centre where is the townhall. The students came from the small towns of Govone, Priocca, Magliano Alfieri, Castellinaldo, San Damiano. The school is attended by about 300 pupils, aged between 3 and 13 years. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What do you do in order to keep fit? 2. How do you preserve food? 3. Is it possible to keep plants on the ISS? 4. How is the quantity of food needed on board the ISS calculated? 5. Can you drink carbonated drinks? 6. Is the water on board recycled? If yes, does it taste different from the normal tap water? 7. After your fitness activity on board are you tired like on Earth? 8. How do you communicate with the control base on Earth? 9. What are the physical reactions you notice when passing from gravity to microgravity? 10. How difficult is it to leave your family and beloved behind for a journey into Space? 11. How did you develop your passion for astronomy? 12. What kind of experiments do you carry out on board? 13. What kind of food do you have at your disposal? 14. How many times a day do you eat? 15. What is a typical day like? 16. What kind of idea about Space did you have before leaving and what do you think now? 17. Does it get boring after a while? 18. Does living in Space increase or reduce weight? 19. Are you prone to infectious diseases on board the ISS? 20. What kind of vehicle takes you to the ISS? 21. How do astronauts wash themselves? How much water can they use? 22. What do astronauts wear inside the spaceship? 23. How long can an astronaut stay in orbit on the ISS? 24. How long does it take for the Shuttle to dock with the ISS? Wonder if others are having this problem. for the past weeks, all these email announcements are delivered to me late. I get them the day after the contacts actually happen. Another activation of the MAI-75 experiment using the SSTV system is scheduled from about 0700-1100 UTC on Dec 09-11. Various modes are expected with the downlink frequency being 145.80 MHz. Most activity will be in range of Moscow but some transmissions could occur beyond that region. Kenneth - N5VHO

The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 09:19 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and IZ7EVR. The contact should be audible over Italy. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Our school is a public primary school named after Alcide De Gasperi. It is attended by about 700 pupils, aged between 6 and 11 years. In addition to the compulsory activities, our school gives the opportunity to attend optional activities in the afternoon; these concern English language, music, sports, theatre, science, ecology, and other artistic and research activities. De Gasperi school looks forward to the contact with the ISS on occasion of the celebrations of the centenarian of the prize Nobel to Guglielmo Marconi. The contact site is located at “Cittadella Mediterranea della Scienza“ of Bari, promoted by University of Bari.
