An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at the Scout Space Jamboree, Octave Chanute Air Museum, Rantoul, Illinois on Sun July 19, 09 at 15:51:03 UTC.The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 15:51:03 UTC.The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and LU8YY. The contact should be audible over portions of South America. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Chanute Air Museum collects, preserves, exhibits and interprets aviation and aerospace artifacts that relate to the life and accomplishments of Octave Chanute, Chanute Field/Chanute Air Force Base and its technical training programs, the history of military aviation and Illinois aviation. The museum reaches out to youth with Aviation Camp and this year will host the first "Space Jam Enterprise 2009" for Boy and Girl Scouts. The Space Jam team believes in the greatest adventure! And that the climb has only just begun! Space Jam is all about exposing pre-college youth to technology, excitement, and the people embarked on the adventure. With luck they will chose to set sail to careers, hobbies and providing support to bring the world closer to the next step in the climb! The VC-H1 unit in auto mode (Robot-36 and transmitting once every 3 minutes) should be operational on 145.800 MHz from approximately 0800-1600 UTC each day. Hello Please join us in listening to the ISS contact with The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto at 16:08 UTC on Thursday 30th July. This will be a telebridge and the ground station is ON4ISS. Audio from this contact will be fed into the IRLP 'Discovery' Reflector (9010) and the EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers. IRLP and Echolink audio is generally transmitted around 15 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. Please note that on Echolink there are automatic breaks of 1.5 seconds in the audio transmission. These occur every 2.5 minutes during the event. For your information, when any ARISS event is supported through the IRLP "Discovery" Reflector 9010, audio is also automatically streamed to the Internet. It is then available via the 'Discovery' Reflector's companion web site www.discoveryreflector.ca . Once on its main page, select "Audio Library" (left sidebar). The prompt to join the audio stream is posted at the top of this page. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report July 27, 2009 1. Upcoming School Contacts Borough of New Providence, NJ, Summer Playground Camp in New Providence, New Jersey has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Thursday, July 30 at 17:24 UTC. This is a town sponsored summer camp activity, primarily for elementary school children (K - 6). The New Providence Amateur Radio Club (NPARC) has been involved with this type of camp for the last five years. It regularly provides an introduction to amateur radio on the air by setting up HF and VHF stations and has the campers communicate with hams around the world. The ARISS contact is an obvious extension of this activity. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on Thursday, July 30 at 16:02 UTC via telebridge station ON4ISS in Belgium. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for United Space School in Seabrook, Texas on Wednesday, August 5 at 13:47 UTC via telebridge station ON4ISS. The school is a once a year session of high school students that meets annually in the NASA/Clear Lake Area. These students come from around the world for a two week session, during which they stay with local host families while being mentored by astronauts, engineers, and scientists to design a mission to Mars as their team project. Class sessions are held at the University of Houston at Clear Lake. The contact will allow students to learn firsthand what the experience of spaceflight is like. They may ask questions about the skills needed to be an astronaut, the effects of weightlessness on the body, the food eaten, leisure activities, etc. They will use this knowledge in putting together their team project presentation, which they will present to the Houston space community at the end of their session. 2. De Winne has ARISS Contact with Portuguese Students On Tuesday, July 21, an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact took place between students attending Escola E.B.2/3 de S. Romão do Coronado in Trofa, Portugal and Frank De Winne, ON1DWN on the ISS. De Winne answered 16 questions put to him by the students. Media coverage included two television stations and the event was highlighted in the evening news. 3. De Winne Participates in ARISS Contact with Ugo Guidi On Thursday, July 23, children from Ugo Guidi in Forte dei Marmi, Lucca, Italy participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact. Frank De Winne, ON1DWN answered twenty questions posed to him by the students. The audio and video were available on: www.ondaforte.tv. OndaForteTV, local media and newspapers covered the event. 4. ARISS Member Comments on Lunar Landing in EE Times EE Times published a July 20 special edition that tells the lunar landing story from the viewpoint of a number of engineers. QST Covers Garriotts at Dayton Hamvention The July issue of the American Radio Relay League's monthly journal, QST, carried a story about its national convention. Astronaut Owen Garriott and Space Flight Participant Richard Garriott were special guests of ARRL and AMSAT (Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation) at this convention in Dayton, the largest ham radio convention in the United States. The article carried a special section about the visiting duo and their forums, and in particular, how Richard signed autographs for students and scouts. Accompanying the story was a photograph of Rosalie White, K1STO, assisting Richard with his autograph duties for a girl who was an admirer of astronauts and spaceflight.

An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Borough of New Providence, NJ, Summer Playground Camp, New Providence, NJ on 30 July. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 17:24 UTC.The contact will be direct between NA1SS and N2XJ. The contact should be audible over the eastern U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The New Providence NJ Summer Playground Camp is operated by the Town Recreation Department. It is for elementary school age children, and most of them are in the 3rd to 5th grade. It is purely a "fun program" with lots of athletic events and outdoor arts and crafts programs. The "Ham Radio at Summer Camp" program, run by the New Providence Amateur Radio Club, is the only educational enrichment part of the camp program. About 100 children participate in the camp. Of those involved as communicators in the ARISS QSO, several have expressed a real interest in Ham Radio, but all of them are looking forward to speaking with a "Real Astronaut." We expect many of our elected officials to be present at the QSO. I have been informed that the Mayor and many Town Council members will be there. I have also been informed that one of our NJ State Senators will be present. In addition I have received a very complimentary letter from the Governor of New Jersey and am awaiting letters from Senator Lautenberg and Senator Menendez of New Jersey. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How many astronauts are in the space station now? Is it crowded? 2. What inspired you to become an astronaut? 3. Can you see any planets or stars? If so can you identify them? 4. Have you seen any other vehicles in space while you are on the ISS? 5. Do you have a particular job on the space station? 6. Are there any animal or plant experiments on the ISS? 7. Have you done a space walk yet? Will you do one? 8. How long does it take to put on your space suit? 9. Have you been able to see the aurora from the ISS? 10. Have you made any regular Ham Radio contacts while you are in space? 11. As a girl, what should I study in college to become an astronaut? 12. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Ugo Guidi, Forte dei Marmi, Lucca, Italy on 23 July. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 19:35 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and IQ5VR. The contact should be audible over Italy. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The participation of 1st grade Ugo Guidi school was the result of a misfortune that recently struck the town of Viareggio. On the evening of June 29, 2009, a train carrying liquid petroleum gas derailed while approaching the Viareggio railway station. The explosion following caused much devastation to the area. The Viani School, located only a few hundred meters from the blast, was on the ARISS waiting list. They were not able to host the event after all because the explosion struck relatives and friends of some members of the school team. The local Amateur Radio Club Station staff (ARI Versilia) IQ5VR has provided the technical support for this event at Ugo Guidi instead, complying with all requirements for the ARISS event. Students are aged 6-11 (primary) and 12-14 (secondary). Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How important is the amateur radio station on board the ISS? 2. What projects do you carry out on board the International Space Station? 3. Who pays for all the costs of the ISS' project? 4. What is it like living in a small place like the space shuttle for a few days? 5. Would you like to participate in a journey to the Moon? 6. What does the ISS inside smell like? 7. Is there a magnetic field in the ISS' orbit? 8. Can you breathe normally on board the ISS? 9. How do you cope with the alternation of day and night every 45 minutes? 10. How long did the training last in order to participate in this mission? 11. What do you do if you get sick in Space? 12. What do your family and your friends think about your job? 13. What is the most dangerous moment during the mission, the take-off or the landing? 14. What do you eat and drink? 15. Would it be possible to produce artificial gravity on the ISS? 16. Is it difficult and dangerous to pass through the atmosphere before landing? 17. Is the perception of time onboard the ISS the same as on Earth? 18. What was the most spectacular moment during your stay in Space? 19. How often can you communicate with your family on Earth? 20. What does it feel like to live without gravity? Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report July 20, 2009 1. Upcoming School Contacts Escola E.B.2/3 de S. Romão do Coronado in Trofa, Portugal has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Tuesday, July 21 at 17:07 UTC. Local amateur radio club Rede dos Emissores Portugueses (REP) is collaborating with the school during this event. Ugo Guidi in Forte dei Marmi, Lucca, Italy has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Thursday, July 23 at 19:35 UTC. 2. ARISS Contact with Campus Saffraanberg Belgian Defence On Friday, July 17, an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held between Campus Saffraanberg Belgian Defence in Sint Truiden, Limburg and Frank De Winne, ON1DWN on the ISS. The scheduled pass for Campus Saffraanberg was cancelled at the last minute due to STS-127 related tasks. It was re-scheduled for the following pass during which De Winne answered 20 questions posed by the students. Approximately 100 guests were in attendance. The contact was webcast and media covering the event included several newspapers, radio and television stations and the Belgian Army TV Service. 3. ARISS Contact Held with Octave Chanute Air Museum An Amateur Radio International Space Station (ARISS) school contact was successfully sponsored for participants at the Scout Space Jamboree, at Octave Chanute Air Museum, Rantoul, Illinois on Sunday July 19. The event was audible over portions of North and South America. The Chanute Air Museum preserves, exhibits and interprets aviation and aerospace artifacts that relate to the life and accomplishments of Octave Chanute, Chanute Field/Chanute Air Force Base and its technical training programs, the history of military aviation and Illinois aviation. The museum reaches out to youth with Aviation Camp and this year it hosted its first "Space Jam Enterprise 2009" for Boy and Girl Scouts. The Space Jam team believes that the "space climb" has only just begun! Space Jam is all about exposing pre-college youth to technology, its excitement, and the people embarked on such an adventure. With luck new youth will choose to set sail to careers, hobbies, and providing support to bring the world closer to the next step in the climb! 4. ARISS Contact - European Special Event On Sunday, July 19, European Special Event, Eichenlaubschule Weiskirchen in Saarland, Germany experienced an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact via telebridge station ON4ISS in Belgium. An audience of about 130 people watched as ESA astronaut Frank De Winne, ON1DWN, answered 18 questions put to him by students from Weiskirchen and Luxemburg. The State Secretary of Economy and Science, Dr. Christian Ege, addressed the audience before the contact. The event was covered by the mass media: Saarländischer Rundfunk (radio broadcast and television), Saarbrücker Zeitung (newspaper) and Concept-TV (local TV production). 5. ARISS Student Wins Newsline Youth Ham of the Year Award Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Team member Nick Lance, KC5KBO, who does ham radio mentoring of students at his local school, was pleased to learn that his student, Andrew Koenig, KE5GDB, has won the Newsline Youth Ham of the Year Award. ARISS was one of the main motivators for Andrew to study for his license, and to stay licensed. He continued his interest in space by helping with ARISS contacts and by being active in ham satellite operations.

An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Escola E.B.2/3 de S. Romão do Coronado, Trofa, Portugal on 21 July. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 17:07 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and CT1HHP. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. E. B. 2,3 S. Romao do Coronado is a public school situated in Trofa, in the north of Portugal, not very far from Oporto (31 Km north). Nowadays, Trofa is basically a rural area, but is slowly becoming more surburban due to the development of industry and trade. This school is mainly attended by children aged between 9 and 15. In addition to key subjects, school tries to offer other activities (theatre, music, art.) and involve the community. The school has about 650 students. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at the EU Special Event, Eichenlaubschule Weiskirchen, Weiskirchen, Germany on Sun July 19, 09. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 17:54 UTC.The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and ON4ISS. The contact should be audible over portions of eastern Europe. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Eichenlaubschule Weiskirchen school is where the pupils can achieve a standard and secondary graduation. First foreign language is English. Concerning school partnerships there are contacts to schools in Luxemburg, France and Rumania. It cooperated with the radio club "DARC Ortsverband Schwarzwälder Hochwald, Q21". Because of their contact with radio technology, a core-team of interested pupils has been formed. Working together with the radio amateurs, a radio school station may be established and a radio club has been founded. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How did you feel during the shuttle launch? 2. How does the earth look like from the station and is it possible to recognize buildings on Earth from the ISS? 3. Beside the sun, the earth, the moon, what other planets can you see from ISS? 4. Can you take a bath or a shower in the ISS? 5. Is it tiring to move at zero gravity? 6. Why do the astronauts have to clean the ISS periodically every week? 7. What was the hardest job you have done at the station? 8. How is security provided for oxygen supply? 9. What kind of space food do you like best? 10. How do you deal with the garbage in the ISS? 11. Where do you keep your dirty laundry? 12. Which standard time are you using in the ISS and how do you know if it is day or night and when it's time to sleep? 13. Do you snore more or less in weightlessness of Space than you do on Earth? 14. What happens if someone in the station gets extremely sick or severely injured? 15. What kind of experiments are you making at the station and what is your mission in the space station? 16. Not far from the charming town of Sint-Truiden, Campus Saffraanberg houses the Royal NCO-School. In former times, this school used to be responsible for the training of all NCO-technicians, but since September 2007, the range of training programmes has been widely extended with technical, as well as non-technical courses for both Dutch- and French-speaking boys and girls. After a successful completion of their training, they are equipped for a military career within the Ministry of Defence. The options in the technical fields of study are: aircraft technology, electromechanics, military armament technology, high-frequency electronics, opto-electronics and ICT. The non-technical fields of study consist of social and military sciences, meteorology and air operations. Because of the importance of their mission, the school and the supporting services of the Campus Saffraanberg are dedicated to maintaining a high standard quality of training and a great level of satisfaction of all people involved. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report July 13, 2009 1. ARISS Contact Between Koichi Wakata and Mugegawa Junior High On Saturday, July 11, students from Mugegawa Junior High School participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with JAXA astronaut Koichi Wakata, KC5ZTA. Wakata answered 17 questions posed to him by the students. Over three hundred parents and guests attended the event, which was covered by five newspapers and a television station. 2. ARISS Contact Held with Technopolis, Belgium An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held between ESA astronaut Frank De Winne, ON1DWN on the ISS and Technopolis® in Mechelen, Antwerpen, Belgium. The contact took place on Saturday, July 11 via telebridge station LU8YY in Argentina. Fourteen questions were asked and answered as an audience of 200 looked on. Belgian astronaut Dirk Frimout was present and gave a talk on space. Three radio and television stations and two newspapers covered the event. The contact audio was fed into the Internet Radio Linking Project (IRLP) and EchoLink servers, providing additional outreach. 3. Successful ARISS Contact with Euro Space Center On Sunday, July 12, youth visiting the Euro Space Center in Belgium during Air and Space Day participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with ESA astronaut Frank De Winne, ON1DWN on the ISS. The contact was made possible through telebridge station WH6PN in Hawaii. Twenty-four students asked one question each of the astronaut in front of an audience of 500 guests. The contact audio was fed into the Internet Radio Linking Project (IRLP) and EchoLink servers, providing additional outreach. 4. SuitSat-2 Becomes a Satellite The Orlan spacesuit that was to house SuitSat-2 amateur radio equipment was recently discarded on a Progress due to space limitations on the ISS. Work continues on the satellite hardware with plans to use a different configuration for deployment. The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) team plans to meet delivery and launch dates for an EVA deployment in April 2010. ARISS Satellite Meeting Held The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) U.S. team met in Phoenix, Arizona over the July 10 - 12 weekend. The team performed integration tests on various components of the SuitSat-2 hardware. 6. Astronaut Training Status A training session is planned this week for astronaut Tracy Caldwell to prepare her for her amateur radio license exam. Caldwell is scheduled to fly with Expedition 23 in April 2010. 7.
