Audio is generally transmitted around 15 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Scuola Secondaria 1° Grado "Alighieri - Trevigi" I-15033, Casale Monferrato, Prov. Alessandria, Italy on 02 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 14:46 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and IK1SLD. The contact should be audible over Italy. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Trevigi Lower Secondary School is a prestigious educational institution in the city centre of Casale Monferrato. Casale is a small town situated on the River Po, in Piedmont (Northern Italy). The students, both boys and girls, number about 450; they are between 11 and 14 years old. The school offers a good standard education through several basic subjects of study that develop the student's general knowledge. They also study English and French or Spanish as foreign languages. A virtual travel in space, communicating with astronauts, is the final event of several school activities concerning Science, History, Geography, Maths, Information Technology and English. Also, it will help students to improve their communicative skills. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What do you feel when you are in space? 2. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at University of Liege, Liege, Belgium on 02 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 13:10 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and ON4ISS. The contact should be audible over portions of eastern Europe. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in French/English. The PhD students' inaugural day is a yearly event organized at the beginning of the academic year and gathering many young researchers of the University of Liege in Belgium (ULg). The purpose is to boost information exchange between the 1500 ULg PhD students and promote training. This half-day begins with a plenary session, welcoming high-level academic/political actors or researchers. We invited Prof Bernard Rentier, ULg Rector, and Marie-Dominique Simonet, Minister for scientific research. The attendees have the opportunity to share their experience through workshops on selected topics: scientific communication, PhD employment and intellectual property. A contact with Frank De Winne on the ISS constitutes for us an extraordinary opportunity to share our passion for science and to talk about the most advanced research in many fields: fundamental, (physics experience from ULg part of OasISS mission), applied, life or human sciences. The "Ciência Viva" contact is ESA selected and takes place in the National Museum of Science and Technology in Lisbon, the name is Pavilhão do Conhecimento - Ciência Viva. The Pavilion of Knowledge - Ciência Viva is an interactive science and technology museum that aims to make science accessible to all, stimulating experimentation and exploration of the physical world by holding science and technology awareness-raising projects for the Portuguese people. The ARISS contact at Ciência Viva will be a major event within the nationwide celebrated Space Week from October 4 to 10. These students participating in this event are aged 14 to 16 and come from different schools in Amadora, one of the main satellite cities in the outskirts of Lisbon. They have been working in Space projects for two years now, and they are highly motivated to do science-related activities. AMRAD, the AMSAT-CT of Portugal, is coordinating the ARISS contact. Symposium Restaurant Locations

All, I had to go on some unexpected travel out of BWI the past couple of weeks. So I did some reconnaissance and developed a couple of maps that depict restaurants near the hotel and airport. You can retrieve these at the AMSAT Symposium Web Site. Go to the food and drink icon and click on the pdf or ppt file. I also included in this package directions to the G&M Restaurant which is close to the hotel. This restaurant just received the WTOP "Best Crab Cake" award through a survey from the radio station's Baltimore/Washington listeners. This restaurant has good food at reasonable prices. We will be including paper copies of these maps in the symposium registration packet. But wanted to give you a heads up, so you can plan out your meals. Upcoming School Contacts An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for R. T. Alderman in Calgary, Alberta, Canada on Monday, September 28 at 20:43 UTC. Educators have developed a series of assignments to reflect both the Alberta curricula and the radio contact experience. Journal entries, computer research projects, skits, and other writing assignments will be required class work in the weeks following the contact. Some teachers are also considering having students design a mural to commemorate this occasion as a companion to the already existing Robert Thirsk mural in one of the stairwells. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Pavilhão do Conhecimento - Ciência Viva in Lisbon, Portugal on Thursday, October 1 at 14:20 UTC. Telebridge station ON4ISS in Belgium will provide the connection. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Sint-Michielscollege Brasschaat vzw (SMCB) in Brasschaat, Belgium on Wednesday, October 7 at 10:20 UTC. Visits to space and science museums are among the science activities planned for the children. Guest speakers will include a representative from Verhaert Space Systems and Dirk Frimout, Belgium's first astronaut. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled with the National Planetarium in Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan, Malaysia on Thursday, October 8 at 09:34 UTC. The contact will occur as part of the National Space Challenge, a program that was created in an effort to instill the talents and desire towards the understanding of space in primary school aged children. Sixteen schools will participate. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Belmont Elementary School in Langley, British Columbia, Canada on Friday, October 9 at 20:20 UTC. Students will complete projects with a "Mission Control" theme and the Langley Amateur Radio Association (L.A.R.A.) will work with the school to organize this event. 2. ARISS Contact Between De Winne and Vrij Technisch Instituut Sint-Lucas An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact took place on Tuesday, September 22. Students from Vrij Technisch Instituut Sint-Lucas in Oudenaarde, Oost - Vlaanderen, Belgium posed 20 questions to Frank De Winne, ON1DWN. An audience of 300 students and teachers were present as well as television, radio and newspaper reporters. The antennas used for the contact as well as a UPS device were constructed by the students. 3. Barratt and HMS Beagle Project Connect via ARISS On Tuesday, September 22, the HMS Beagle Project in Parati, Brazil participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact via ground station K6DUE in Maryland. Approximately sixty students were present and watched as classmates asked ten questions of Mike Barratt, KD5MIJ. The project (which aims to rebuild the ship that carried Darwin around the world) and NASA have signed an International Space Act Agreement, with Barratt as the initiator and main connection on the NASA side of the project. The project will unite ISS astronaut photography with ocean surface water and other biological and physical samples taken by the crew of the new Beagle. 4. ARISS Contact with Cedarview Middle School Students attending Cedarview Middle School in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada experienced an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Thursday, September 24. Astronaut Robert Thirsk, VA3CSA answered 20 questions put to him by the students. The school principal commented on the contact, "I have never seen this kind of quiet on students at a school wide event before." CTV Ottawa and other local media provided news coverage. 5. Garfield Elementary, WHEELS and ARISS Team up to Talk about Space Garfield Elementary School students in Boise, Idaho participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Thursday, September 24 via telebridge station W6SRJ in California. Students visited the NASA Exploration Experience traveling exhibit on display at the Idaho Historical Museum to learn about space exploration and its benefits. Students were able to ask 6 questions of Astronaut Mike Barratt, KD5MIJ during the 9 minute pass. The event was well attended by youth, teachers and parents. Students were also observing the contact at the W6SRJ ground station - two were students from Santa Rosa Junior College and another student was visiting from a local K-12 school. Media coverage included three television stations and the audio was fed into the EchoLink AMSAT and JK1ZRW servers. 6. Thirsk Speaks with Japanese Students via ARISS Contact On Saturday, September 27, students from Houya Elementary School in Nishitokyo, Japan participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact. Astronaut Robert Thirsk, VA3CSA answered 15 questions posed by the students. An audience of approximately 250 was present for the contact. News coverage was provided by two magazines and an FM radio station. 7. ISS SSTV Active Gennady Padalka, RN3DT activated the MAI-75 experiment onboard the ISS on Thursday and Friday, September 24 and 25 from approximately 1000-1600 UTC. Slow Scan Television (SSTV) images of Earth were downlinked to ground stations, including one at the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI). 8. Astronaut Training Status Astronaut Tracy Caldwell, KF5DBF was given an overview session on the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) program this past week. Caldwell is scheduled to fly with Expedition 23 in April 2010. 9. ARRL QST Covers ARISS News The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) published two ARISS (Amateur Radio on the International Space Station) related news items in its October 2009 issue of QST. The first is a short item regarding the Boy Scouts of America Venture Crew 272 of Hillsboro, IN, and Troop 17 from Champaign IL that hosted hundreds of scouts in July at the third annual Space Jam. The most favorite activity was talking to Astronaut Bob Thirsk, VA3CSA on the ISS. The scouts took part in two high altitude balloon launches, and worked on earning the Radio Merit scouting badges. The second item (page 20) is a short article on ARRL recognizing members of the USS Hornet, some of whom supported the NASA capsule recovery mission for Apollo 11. The USS Hornet Amateur Radio Club sponsors training for Radio Merit scouting badges, and one veteran regaled boy scouts describing his duties as shark sharpshooter during a capsule recovery mission. The ARRL monthly journal has a circulation of 150,000. 10. ARRL Article on Dayton Hamvention The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) posted a web story about an ARISS (Amateur Radio on the International Space Station) team member who attended Dayton Hamvention for the first time this year. This member took in seminars by Richard Garriott and visited the AMSAT (Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation) ARISS-related exhibits, including the ARISSat-1 hardware. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at R T Alderman, Calgary, AB, Canada on 28 Sep. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 20:43 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and VE6JBJ. The contact should be audible over portions of western Canada. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. In preparation for the radio contact with the international space station, teachers at R.T. Alderman Middle School have been speaking with their students about what constitutes a "powerful question". Students have been asked to generate questions that are both thought-provoking and open-ended. Students then submit their questions for the competition to see who will be selected for the contact. After the radio contact, which involves every student in the school, core teachers will provide opportunities for students to debrief in class. Further, a series of assignments are being developed to reflect both the Alberta curricula and the radio contact experience. Everything from journal entries, computer research projects, skits, and other writing assignments will be required class work in the weeks following the contact. Some teachers are also considering having students design a mural to commemorate this occasion as a companion to the already existing Robert Thirsk mural in one of the stairwells. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Have you discovered any signs of life in Space? 2. How does it feel when you leave Earth during take-off and re-entry? 3. How was the ISS constructed and how long did it take? 4. How do you stay fit and healthy in the Space Station? 5. Are there personal items that you brought with you into Space? 6. What is the best part of working with people from other countries? 7. What are the advantages and disadvantages of being an astronaut while on Earth or in Space? 8. When you decided you wanted to be an Astronaut what training and education did you have to do? 9. Have you ever experienced an emergency or crisis while in Space? 10.How has this mission impacted your relationship with your family? 11.What music do you listen to up there, if any? 12.How long do you typically sleep for, in a 24 hour period? 13.How do you spend a typical day on board the ISS? 14.When you went to RTA did you ever wish you could travel into Space? 15.What is the distance from Earth that you orbit, and does this vary? 16.Do members of the crew typically gain or lose weight during the 6 month mission and does that effect your preparations before you leave? 17.What physical and emotional stressors do you experience? 18.What is required to prepare for a 6 month mission in space? 19.Have there been any experiments in space where the outcome surprised you? An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Houya Elementary School, Nishitokyo, Japan on 26 Sep. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 09:28 UTC. Houya elementary school is established in 1874 and the number of children is 387 persons. We have no own amateur radio club station. But we will enhance an experimental educations, and we will plan to teach children who are interested in the ISS about the purpose of the ISS. The staff and students of Garfield Elementary, in Boise, Idaho, are excited about having the opportunity to communicate with the International Space Station. All grades are involved, and the event has motivated students' interest in math and science. Teachers have been using the event to focus on curriculum objectives. Preparing for the contact with the space station has been an excellent way to set up students' discussions. Questions from the students have provided opportunities for the teachers to stress the importance of math and science in expanding our knowledge and horizons. Cedarview has a dynamic, energetic staff who are committed to providing quality educational experiences to all students. We present our students with a range of opportunities to extend their interests, talents, skills and leadership qualities. Our System Initiative for this year is literacy. We have expanded our library collection, improved accessibility to students and increased community involvement. By incorporating professional development of staff and sharing of best practices pertaining to the teaching of reading and writing we will develop student skills in these areas. The school television broadcast studio will feature literary achievement and engage children in learning. A new math programme is being implemented at all three grade levels. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report September 21, 2009 1. Upcoming School Contacts An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Vrij Technisch Instituut Sint-Lucas in Oudenaarde, Oost - Vlaanderen, Belgium on Tuesday, September 22 at 13:47 UTC. Students have learned about Earth rotation, orbit speed, time zones, satellites, weather forecasts and geostationary versus polar satellites. The antennas which will be used for the contact as well as a UPS device have been constructed by the students themselves. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for the HMS Beagle Project in Parati, Brazil on Tuesday, September 22 at 18:20 UTC via ground station K6DUE in Maryland, USA. The project (which aims to rebuild the ship that carried Darwin around the world) and NASA have signed an International Space Act Agreement, with Mike Barratt as the initiator and main connection on the NASA side of the project. The project will unite ISS astronaut photography with ocean surface water and other biological and physical samples taken by the crew of the new Beagle. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Cedarview Middle School in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada on Thursday, September 24 at 19:07 UTC. Students have learned about the ISS through videos, the internet and guest speakers. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Garfield Elementary School in Boise, Idaho on Thursday, September 24 at 20:34 UTC via telebridge station W6SRJ in California. Students will visit the NASA Exploration Experience traveling exhibit on display at the Idaho Historical Museum and will learn about space exploration and its benefits. Students will learn about amateur radio, space science and the global cooperation involved with running the ISS. 2. Liberty Middle School - ARISS Contact Successful On Tuesday, September 15, an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held between students at Liberty Middle School in Camas, Washington and Mike Barratt, KD5MIJ, on the ISS. Telebridge station ON4ISS in Belgium facilitated the contact. Twelve students were able to ask 17 questions of the astronaut. A large audience gathered to observe the contact, including Barratt's mother, and his uncle was able to listen in from the hospital. The audio was also fed into the school PA system. Two newspapers covered the event. 3. ARISS Contact Held During Belgian Space Week Euro Space Center (ESC) in Transinne, Belgium experienced an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Wednesday, September 16 via telebridge station W6SRJ in California. Frank De Winne, ON1DWN answered 18 questions posed to him as an audience of approximately 70 people looked on. Audio was fed into the EchoLink AMSAT and JK1ZRW servers. The contact was held as part of Belgian Space Week 2009, which was held at ESC from September 14 -18. The theme of the event was "Life in Space." ESC is recognized by the educational ministries. 4. Delta Researchers Schools Experience ARISS Contact On Friday, September 18, an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held between Delta Researchers Schools, Dutch Ministry of Education and Frank De Winne, ON1DWN on the ISS. Telebridge station VK4KHZ in Australia provided the connection. All 18 prepared questions were answered with time left over for an additional question. This was an ESA event from Space Expo, Noordwijk, the Netherlands. 5. Astronaut Training Status On Wednesday, September 9, Astronaut Tracy Caldwell took and passed her amateur radio license exam. She has been issued the callsign, KF5DBF. Caldwell is scheduled to fly with Expedition 23 in April 2010. 6. AMSAT Symposium, ARISS Ops Meeting The Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT) Symposium will be held on Friday, October 9 through Sunday, October 11 at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel at the Baltimore Washington Airport in Maryland. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) presentation will be given and a demo of ARISSat-1 is planned. The AMSAT banquet keynote speaker will be Dr. Martin Collins, a curator in the Space History Division at the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. The contact should be audible over the east coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The HMS Beagle Project (which aims to sail a rebuilt HMS Beagle 'round the world in Darwin's wake) and NASA have signed an International Space Act Agreement to unite ISS astronaut photography with ocean surface sampling from the new Beagle. The new Beagle is not yet built but on September 20-23, we will be carrying out a workshop and feasibility study in Paraty, Brazil. The event includes short voyages aboard tall ship Tocorime to coincide with ISS passes on the 20th, 22nd and 24th, a scientific workshop exploring opportunities for modern science under sail, and an educational and media event on the 22nd which will connect 60 children from local Paraty schools via ham radio to Mike Barratt and/or other astronauts aboard the ISS. We think this is the first time that children from Brazilian public schools (as opposed to private international schools in Brazil) will have been connected with the ISS. The children will be connected from a pavilion in Paraty, within sight of the Tocorime at anchor. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. We would like to know how is the day by day life on the International Space Station? 2. We have some questions about environment and biodiversity. How do Nasa's researchers study global warming? 3. If carbon dioxide emissions are kept at their current levels until the end of this century, what could be the consequences to our planet? 4. What do you think about pre-salt petroleum extraction and how this can interfere with the environment? 5. According to your research, what is your bigger concern related to the preservation of Amazonian biodiversity? 6. What is your concern related to the impact of nuclear energy to the environment? 7. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Vrij Technisch Instituut Sint-Lucas, Oudenaarde, Oost - Vlaanderen, Belgium,on 22 Sep. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 13:47 UTC.The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and ON4OB. The contact should be audible over eastern Europe. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Dutch. Oudenaarde is situated 45km (30miles) west of Brussels and has about 30.000 inhabitants. It is situated in the heart of the Flemish Ardennes, with gently rolling hills and countryside, loved by walkers and cyclists alike. VTI Sint-Lucas is a secondary technical school for pupils aged between 12 and 19 years old. It offers technical or vocational studies, such as industrial science, electricity-electronics, electro-mechanics, carpentry, central heating, construction .. We are proud of our school's motto: "With a heart for the person and technology". Our school has about 540 pupils, mainly boys. Under the enthusiastic leadership of Patriek De Temmerman, our school has been working on this project for a whole school year. It was the central theme of our School Open Day. Space and the ISS were linked to many courses. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Delta Researchers Schools, Dutch Ministry of Education from Space Expo, Noordwijk, The Netherlands on 18 Sep. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 15:55 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and VK4KHZ. The contact should be audible over portions of Australia. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Dutch. This is a regular ARISS contact arranged for Delta Researcher Schools every year as part of the commitment to DRS that ESA has entered into during the time of Andre Kuipers Delta Mission to the ISS. This agreement was made between The Ministry of Education in the Netherlands, ESA and NASA in 2004. It is based around the model of the NASA Explorer schools. The children come from Delta schools all over the Netherlands and the questions are selected after a competition. As there are now 45 Delta schools it gives a chance for all the schools to have a chance to speak to an astronaut.The children are from 10-12 years old from upper primary school level. 3 children from each school will be attending and there are 12 schools represented on this day.Twelve of the children will be trained before hand to ask the questions which this time will be in Dutch.They will each ask the question that won them the place at this event. There will be a short presentation to the children explaining to them the concept of remote communication and ham radio by an ARISS expert. There will also be information about Frank De Winne and footage of his activities on board the ISS as well as information about the ISS. These children have been involved in learning about the ISS and Human spaceflight as part of their Delta School project. The contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Dutch. An International Space Station ARISS contact has been planned with 10 to 14 year students at the Euro Space Center,Transinne, Belgium on 16 September 2009. Approximately 500 youngsters from different schools in the French part of Belgium come together with astronauts, cosmonauts and a taikonaut who participate in the "Belgian Space Week 2009" from 14 to 18 September. Theme of the event in the Euro Space Center is Life in Space. Students hope to be able to talk to the Belgian ESA astronaut Frank De Winne and ask him questions about his life in the International Space Station and about his experience as UNICEF ambassador. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report September 14, 2009 1. Upcoming School Contacts An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Liberty Middle School in Camas, Washington on Tuesday, September 15 at 20:25 UTC. Telebridge station ON4ISS in Belgium will facilitate the contact. For twenty years, Liberty's sixth grade students have actively participated as "astronauts in training" as they completed an eight week training course that culminated with a flight in the school's space station, Alpha-Z 2000. Computers, with software written by a local parent, linked the students to Mission Control with voice communication and security cameras allowed teachers to observe how the astronauts were progressing on their mission. One of the school's space station modules has been named in honor of Mike Barratt, who attended Camas Public Schools. The ARISS contact will be integrated into these activities. Euro Space Center (ESC) in Transinne, Belgium is slated for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Wednesday, September 16 at 07:12 UTC via telebridge station W6SRJ in California. ESC is recognized by the educational ministries. It is both a Space Expo open to the public and a Space Camp. The Space Camp provides children with space training and is operational year round. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Delta Researchers Schools, Dutch Ministry of Education on Friday, September 18 at 15:55 UTC via telebridge station VK4KHZ in Australia. The project (which aims to rebuild the ship that carried Darwin around the world) and NASA have signed an International Space Act Agreement, with Mike Barratt as the initiator and main connection on the NASA side of the project. The project will unite ISS astronaut photography with ocean surface water and other biological and physical samples taken by the crew of the new Beagle. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Cedarview Middle School in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada on Thursday, September 24 at 19:07 UTC. Students have learned about the ISS through videos, the internet and guest speakers. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Garfield Elementary School in Boise, Idaho on Thursday, September 24 at 20:34 UTC via telebridge station W6SRJ in California. Students will visit the NASA Exploration Experience traveling exhibit on display at the Idaho Historical Museum and will learn about space exploration and its benefits. Students have learned about amateur radio, space science and the global cooperation involved with running the ISS. 2. ARISS Contact with Atheneum Students Successful On Thursday, September 10, students attending Atheneum Middenschool Keerbergen in Keerbergen, Belgium experienced an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with Frank De Winne, ON1DWN on the ISS. Telebridge station W6SRJ in California provided the connection. An audience of approximately 30 people observed the students as their twenty questions were answered. 3. De Winne Particpates in ARISS Contact During UNICEF Event An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact took place between UNICEF Belgium at the Euro Space Center in Transinne, Belgium and Frank De Winne, ON1DWN, UNICEF's goodwill ambassador. The contact occurred on Thursday, September 10 via station LU1CGB in Argentina. UNICEF Belgium is running a campaign called WaSH (Water, Sanitation, Hygiene) to make students aware of how important water is for humans. Some of the students participating in the campaign were given the opportunity to travel to the center to speak with the Expedition 20 astronaut. Eighteen questions were answered. 4. ARISS Contact with Tokyo Denki University On Saturday, September 12, an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held between students attending Tokyo Denki University High/Junior High School in Koganei, Tokyo, Japan and Michael Barratt, KD5MIJ on the ISS. Thirty people gathered and listened as eighteen questions were asked and answered. The school has a radio club and recruits new members each year. Students study for their licenses, learn how to make radio contacts and learn about space and the ISS. 5. Astronaut Training Status Astronauts Timothy Creamer, KC5WKI and Soichi Noguchi, KD5TVP participated in Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) training sessions on Wednesday, September 9. They spoke with children from the Ralph McCall School in Airdrie, Alberta, Canada. The training sessions were terrestrial-based amateur radio contacts using ARISS equivalent equipment. Audio was available on the Internet Radio Linking Project (IRLP). 6. AMSAT Symposium, ARISS Ops Meeting to be Held in October The Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT) Symposium will be held on Friday, October 9 through Sunday, October 11 at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel at the Baltimore Washington Airport in Maryland. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) presentation will be given and a demo of ARISSat-1 is planned. An ARISS Operations team meeting will be held following the symposium on Sunday, October 11. 7. ARISS Presentation Given at Great Lakes Division Symposium The 2009 Great Lakes Division Symposium was held in Findlay, Ohio on Saturday September 12, followed by the Findlay Hamfest on September 13. A presentation on the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) program was given at the symposium by ARISS mentor Charlie Sufana, AJ9N.

Moreover, digital ATV is also thought of. Anyway, among many other aspects, equipment volume, weight, power consumption and heat budget are to be discussed with ESA and EADS". When i donate to help funding the project i was under the impression my money will at least give another easy available amateur transponder but it seems we will ended up with an nearly exclusive ARISS transponder as the actual cross band repeater and the supposed always activated SSTV system are never activated. Sorry for the donators but you will not be able to use your U/V system on the columbus amateur radio station. What it is even more curious is we are literally flooded with ARISS contact news and pretty soon with ARISSAT as the ARISS actual goals seems to be directed towards the suit-sat II replacement. But what about this remaining columbus L/S transponder? did anyone got any news about the activation of the radio/transponder? what i was able to get is dated back in 2007. The funding never reach the intended target money wise nor project wise too. I just hope someone in ARISS or in the AMSAT'S will be able to come up with some fresh news? My greatest fear is this NORAIS will replace the amateur radio project and they will vever use the actual L/S amateur patch antenna! I just hope someone will tell me that i'm wrong here. BUT if you read below an excerpt from the ARISS June 2009 it's not helping me dissipating my fears (Quote-2) "VHF-UHF antennas Mark Severance N5XWF gave an AIS presentation on the co-usage by ESA and ARISS of VHF antennas for AIS (Automatic Identification System), the tracking system for ships. STS-129 should be the shuttle mission associated with the space walk that will take place for the attachment of the antennas we will co-use. NASA will be responsible for cost of the spacewalk. ESA will be responsible for the cost of the installation, for the cost of the clamp to install the antennas, and the cost for the integration of the clamp." "Onboard equipment At this annual meeting, we will discuss which radios to install in the Columbus module. The VHF Ericsson radio is on board in the Russian segment. The UHF one, that has never been used, is in the JEM. We have one of the Kenwood D-700s, also. We will get a great deal of help from NASA and ESA for the work on the safety certification and the cost of this, the cost for upmass, and the expense for an operating location in the Columbus module." Just for the record STS-129 launch is planned for November 12 2009 and we are on the 14 of September!!! What it is the most disturbing is this section of the May 19 ARISS tele conference meeting (Quote-3) "Low upmass plans are more highly favored, so re-use of existing on-orbit hardware will be a more favored approach. Finally, there will be technical discussions on the AIS and ARISS antennas and their installation on the outside of the Columbus module. The results of these discussions would be briefed to the ARISS-I team during the joint ARWG/ARISS-I meeting on Wednesday morning. " Not a single word on the L/S system or is the money donated will be use to fund a joint venture with a non amateur radio system? On the July teleconference we can read (quote-4) "At the meeting the most important topic was how we work with the space agencies education office and installation of equipment on Columbus," All discussion where conducted behind close door? An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Liberty Middle School, Camas, Washington on 15 Sep. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 20:26 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and ON4ISS. The contact should be audible over portions of western Europe. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Nestled along the beautiful Columbia River with Mt. Hood towering in the distance, Camas is one of the fastest-growing communities in the state. Camas retains the charm of a small town but is just 25 minutes away from downtown Portland, Oregon. Once only a paper mill town, many large corporations now make their home in Camas, including WaferTech, Underwriters Laboratory and Sharp Microelectronics. Our district has two high schools, two middle schools, and five elementary schools. Liberty Middle School is home to more than 600 sixth, seventh and eighth grade "Lions." Opened in 2006, we are committed to building a strong academic community. Our mission statement, designed by both students and staff is: A thriving community united to grow. Possibilities! Liberty is the current home to the Camas Space Education Program, launched more than twenty years ago. All sixth grade students train for six weeks, including a SCUBA experience, to become "astronauts". The climax of the program is a ten hour mission on board Alpha-Z, our school space station. We are proud to say that more than 3,000 sixth graders completed this simulation! Participants will ask as many of the following questions (translated) as time allows: 1. What do you miss most from Earth? 12. If someone told you you could live on Mars but you couldn't come back would you do it? 13. Was training underwater really like your spacewalk? 14. What was your favorite part of training to be an astronaut? 15. What is the most beautiful thing you have seen in space? 16. What are you planning to do when you get back to Earth? 17. NasaTv in its KSC big display mode is showing an orbital radio footprint centred on the UK. Don't remember it. It's the sort of thing that's quite familiar, like any other AOS/LOS geometric V/UHF ground station polygon. Anyone know if this is significant for shuttle comms etc? 73 de andy g0sfj

An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Tokyo Denki University High/Junior High School, Koganei, Tokyo, Japan on 12 Sep. The Tokyo Dendai (Tokyo Electric University) junior hogh/high school was established in 1948. Our school has about 1200 students and we have a ham club (Callsign is JA1YQZ.), the club has grown to ten member now. This question member is a member of these ham clubs. Hello Please join us in listening to the ISS contact with participants at Atheneum Middenschool, Keerbergen, Belgium on 10th September at 09:31 UTC. This will be a telebridge and the Ground Station will be W6SRJ. Also on the same telebridge will be a contact with UNICEF Belgium from the Euro Space Centre at 09:55, the ground station will be LU1CGB. It's a rare treat to have two contacts immediately after each other, and worth listening to. Audio from this contact will be fed into the EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers. Audio is generally transmitted around 15 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. Please note that on Echolink there are automatic breaks of 1.5 seconds in the audio transmission. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report September 7, 2009 1. Upcoming School Contacts An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Atheneum Middenschool Keerbergen in Keerbergen, Belgium on Thursday, September 10 at 09:31 UTC. This will be a telebridge contact via station W6SRJ in California, conducted in Dutch, with Frank De Winne, ON1DWN. UNICEF Belgium has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Thursday, September 10 at 09:55 UTC via LU1CGB in Argentina. UNICEF Belgium is running a campaign called WaSH (Water, Sanitation, Hygiene) to make students aware of how important water is for humans. Frank De Winne is one of UNICEF's goodwill ambassadors and as water provisioning is one of the most challenging problems in space, it seemed appropriate to link the campaign with Frank's mission. Students participating in the campaign may win a chance to travel to Euro Space Center to speak with De Winne through this contact. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Tokyo Denki University High/Junior High School in Koganei, Tokyo, Japan on Saturday, September 12 at 08:25 UTC. The school has a radio club which recruits new members each year. Students study for their licenses, learn how to make radio contacts and learn about space and the ISS. 2. ARISS Contact with Craigmore High School On Wednesday, September 2, an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held between Craigmore High School in Blakeview, South Australia and Expedition 20 Astronaut Frank De Winne, ON1DWN, on the ISS. An audience of 40 people gathered for the event and one newspaper provided media coverage. 3. ESA Astronaut De Winne Speaks with Vrije Basisschool, Belgium On Thursday, September 3, Frank De Winne, ON1DWN, participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with Vrije Basisschool in De Haan, Belgium via telebridge station VK4HZ in Australia. De Winne answered twenty-two questions posed to him by the students. Approximately 240 students, teachers and parents as well as radio, television and newspaper reporters attended the event. The audio was fed into the EchoLink AMSAT and JK1ZRW servers. This was a European Space Agency (ESA) event. Students who participated in the ARISS contact were chosen through an ESA competition. 4. ARISS Contact with ESA/ESOC Successful An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held at the European Space Agency (ESA)/European Space Operation Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt, Germany on Friday, September 4 via telebridge station LU8YY in Argentina. The contact was held during an open day event, "The Long Night of the Stars." Students from a local school, "Schuldorf Bergstrasse," in Seeheim participated in the contact. Astronauts Robert Thirsk, Frank de Winne and Christer Fuglesang took turns answering eleven questions posed to them. An audience of 200 gathered at the stage for the contact and several audio and video links were provided for all the visitor rooms of the Open Day event at ESOC, so that an additional 750 visitors could connect to the contact. The event was covered by the television station Hessischer Rundfunk HR3, the radio station HR-Info Radio Hessischer Rundfunk Frankfurt and two newspapers, Frankfurter Rundschau and Darmstaedter Echo. There was also a live coverage via the Internet (Kosmologs) and five freelance journalists were present. The audio was also fed into the EchoLink AMSAT and JK1ZRW servers. 5. Stockholm Students Question Fuglesang via ARISS Contact On Sunday, September 6, students from Sätraskolan in Skärholmen, Stockholm, Sweden participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact via telebridge station LU8YY in Argentina. STS-128 Mission Specialist Christer Fuglesang, KE5CGR, answered 14 questions as an audience of 400 gathered for the contact. Media covered the event and the audio was fed into the EchoLink AMSAT and JK1ZRW servers. 6. ARISS News on Amateur Radio Newsline On September 4, Amateur Radio Newsline Report 1673 reported on the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) project ARISSat-1. Just to inform our AMSAT'S about this event! It will be a great media platform even more if ISS can be activated (Cross band repeater or direct crew contact) during this period October 4 to 10. What is World Space Week? It is an international celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition. The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1999 that World Space Week will be held each year from October 4-10. These dates commemorate two events: * October 4, 1957 -- Launch of the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, thus opening the way for space exploration * October 10, 1967 - The signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activites of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies. Where and how is World Space Week celebrated? It is open to all. Government agencies, industry, non-profit organizations, teachers, or even individuals can organize events to celebrate space. This week is coordinated by the United Nations with the support of World Space Week Association and local coordinators in many countries. Information on the many locations and countries that celebrate World Space Week can be found here. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at UNICEF Belgium from Euro Space Center, Belgium, on 10 Sep. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 09:56 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and LU1CGB. The contact should be audible over portions of the South America. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in French and Dutch. UNICEF Belgium will launch by the 25th of September its new educative campaign: WaSH. To promote this event the organization has organized a big drawing contest. It has been asked of the world classes willing to participate to imagine a WaSH logo and to include with it an important message about water and the needs to protect it. Three classes have been selected. The students and their teachers will spend a day in the Euro Space Center where they will discover what it takes to become an astronaut and also the new WaSH campaign of UNICEF Belgium. Frank DeWinne is the godfather of this campaign. The classes will have an ARISS contact with him. This contact will be the opportunity for these children to establish a link between the WaSH campaign and its godfather and to understand that space research is important also to help improve water access for humanity. The contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English or Dutch. Onze middenschool, voor de eerste graad , gelegen in Keerbergen, maakt deel uit van het Koninklijk Atheneum Keerbergen. Onze middenschool telt ongeveer een 560 leerlingen. Deze leerlingen zijn gemiddeld tussen de 12 en 14 jaar oud. Deze deelname aan het ARISS project wordt gelinkt aan het vak Technologische Opvoeding. Hierin komt een project transport aan bod. Doel van dit project is om in verschillende groepjes milieuvriendelijke transportmiddelen te ontwerpen en te maken. Dit wordt ondersteund door een cursus waarin verschillende soorten transport aan bod komen. De ruimtevaart komt in dit project nadrukkelijk naar voor. Our high school, for students who are in the first grade, is situated in Keerbergen, and is a part of the Koninklijk Atheneum Keerbergen. Our school has about 560 students, with an average age between 12 and 14 years old. Our participation in the ARISS project is linked with the course "Technological Education". In this course, the students have a project that has to do with transportation. The purpose of this project is to design and make a transportation device that is friendly to the environment. This project is supported with a syllabus where the students learn about the different means of transportation. Space travel is a big part of this project. Special Event Coinciding with AMSAT Symposium

All, Those of you into Edgar Allan Poe.there is a special treat if you come to this year's symposium. The famous poet is celebrating his 200th birthday this year. He lived in Baltimore for several years and died and was buried in the city. And there is a Poe Museum at the Baltimore house he lived in before his death. The year-long commemoration of Poe will culminate with a recreation of his funeral that occurs around the Symposium dates. Poe died on October 7, 1849. There will be a recreation of a wake for Poe from noon to 11 pm at the Poe House. This will be followed up with a mock-funeral for Poe on Sunday October 11 (12:30 and 4:30). John Astin (Gomez Addams from the Addams family fame) will officiate the funeral services. All, Those interested in attending the AMSAT Symposium in Baltimore this October, I just got a notice that Airtran has a sale to and from BWI until September 17. $39-119 with a 10 day advance purchase. Sign up now to get the best fares before they are taken by others. Airtran does charge for checked luggage. We will be posting the Symposium agenda this week. For planning purposes, the BoD meeting starts Thursday morning and runs until noon Friday. The symposium starts at 1 pm Friday and runs until noon Sunday. The AMSAT annual meeting with be Saturday afternoon. And there will be an ARISS ops meeting (all are invited) on Sunday.
