An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Tokyo Denki University High/Junior High School, Koganei, Tokyo, Japan on 12 Sep. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 08:25 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and JA1YQZ. The contact should be audible over Japan. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Tokyo Dendai (Tokyo Electric University) junior hogh/high school was established in 1948. Our school has about 1200 students and we have a ham club (Callsign is JA1YQZ.), the club has grown to ten member now. This question member is a member of these ham clubs. Hello Please join us in listening to the ISS contact with participants at Atheneum Middenschool, Keerbergen, Belgium on 10th September at 09:31 UTC. This will be a telebridge and the Ground Station will be W6SRJ. Also on the same telebridge will be a contact with UNICEF Belgium from the Euro Space Centre at 09:55, the ground station will be LU1CGB. It's a rare treat to have two contacts immediately after each other, and worth listening to. Audio from this contact will be fed into the EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers. Audio is generally transmitted around 15 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. Please note that on Echolink there are automatic breaks of 1.5 seconds in the audio transmission. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report September 7, 2009 1. Upcoming School Contacts An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Atheneum Middenschool Keerbergen in Keerbergen, Belgium on Thursday, September 10 at 09:31 UTC. This will be a telebridge contact via station W6SRJ in California, conducted in Dutch, with Frank De Winne, ON1DWN. UNICEF Belgium has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Thursday, September 10 at 09:55 UTC via LU1CGB in Argentina. UNICEF Belgium is running a campaign called WaSH (Water, Sanitation, Hygiene) to make students aware of how important water is for humans. Frank De Winne is one of UNICEF's goodwill ambassadors and as water provisioning is one of the most challenging problems in space, it seemed appropriate to link the campaign with Frank's mission. Students participating in the campaign may win a chance to travel to Euro Space Center to speak with De Winne through this contact. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Tokyo Denki University High/Junior High School in Koganei, Tokyo, Japan on Saturday, September 12 at 08:25 UTC. The school has a radio club which recruits new members each year. Students study for their licenses, learn how to make radio contacts and learn about space and the ISS. 2. ARISS Contact with Craigmore High School On Wednesday, September 2, an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held between Craigmore High School in Blakeview, South Australia and Expedition 20 Astronaut Frank De Winne, ON1DWN, on the ISS. An audience of 40 people gathered for the event and one newspaper provided media coverage. 3. ESA Astronaut De Winne Speaks with Vrije Basisschool, Belgium On Thursday, September 3, Frank De Winne, ON1DWN, participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with Vrije Basisschool in De Haan, Belgium via telebridge station VK4HZ in Australia. De Winne answered twenty-two questions posed to him by the students. Approximately 240 students, teachers and parents as well as radio, television and newspaper reporters attended the event. The audio was fed into the EchoLink AMSAT and JK1ZRW servers. This was a European Space Agency (ESA) event. Students who participated in the ARISS contact were chosen through an ESA competition. 4. ARISS Contact with ESA/ESOC Successful An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held at the European Space Agency (ESA)/European Space Operation Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt, Germany on Friday, September 4 via telebridge station LU8YY in Argentina. The contact was held during an open day event, "The Long Night of the Stars." Students from a local school, "Schuldorf Bergstrasse," in Seeheim participated in the contact. Astronauts Robert Thirsk, Frank de Winne and Christer Fuglesang took turns answering eleven questions posed to them. An audience of 200 gathered at the stage for the contact and several audio and video links were provided for all the visitor rooms of the Open Day event at ESOC, so that an additional 750 visitors could connect to the contact. The event was covered by the television station Hessischer Rundfunk HR3, the radio station HR-Info Radio Hessischer Rundfunk Frankfurt and two newspapers, Frankfurter Rundschau and Darmstaedter Echo. There was also a live coverage via the Internet (Kosmologs) and five freelance journalists were present. The audio was also fed into the EchoLink AMSAT and JK1ZRW servers. 5. Stockholm Students Question Fuglesang via ARISS Contact On Sunday, September 6, students from Sätraskolan in Skärholmen, Stockholm, Sweden participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact via telebridge station LU8YY in Argentina. STS-128 Mission Specialist Christer Fuglesang, KE5CGR, answered 14 questions as an audience of 400 gathered for the contact. Media covered the event and the audio was fed into the EchoLink AMSAT and JK1ZRW servers. 6. ARISS News on Amateur Radio Newsline On September 4, Amateur Radio Newsline Report 1673 reported on the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) project ARISSat-1. Just to inform our AMSAT'S about this event! It will be a great media platform even more if ISS can be activated (Cross band repeater or direct crew contact) during this period October 4 to 10. What is World Space Week? It is an international celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition. The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1999 that World Space Week will be held each year from October 4-10. These dates commemorate two events: * October 4, 1957 -- Launch of the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, thus opening the way for space exploration * October 10, 1967 - The signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activites of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies. Where and how is World Space Week celebrated? It is open to all. Government agencies, industry, non-profit organizations, teachers, or even individuals can organize events to celebrate space. This week is coordinated by the United Nations with the support of World Space Week Association and local coordinators in many countries. Information on the many locations and countries that celebrate World Space Week can be found here. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at UNICEF Belgium from Euro Space Center, Belgium, on 10 Sep. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 09:56 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and LU1CGB. The contact should be audible over portions of the South America. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in French and Dutch. UNICEF Belgium will launch by the 25th of September its new educative campaign: WaSH. To promote this event the organization has organized a big drawing contest. It has been asked of the world classes willing to participate to imagine a WaSH logo and to include with it an important message about water and the needs to protect it. Three classes have been selected. The students and their teachers will spend a day in the Euro Space Center where they will discover what it takes to become an astronaut and also the new WaSH campaign of UNICEF Belgium. Frank DeWinne is the godfather of this campaign. The classes will have an ARISS contact with him. This contact will be the opportunity for these children to establish a link between the WaSH campaign and its godfather and to understand that space research is important also to help improve water access for humanity. The contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English or Dutch. Onze middenschool, voor de eerste graad , gelegen in Keerbergen, maakt deel uit van het Koninklijk Atheneum Keerbergen. Onze middenschool telt ongeveer een 560 leerlingen. Deze leerlingen zijn gemiddeld tussen de 12 en 14 jaar oud. Deze deelname aan het ARISS project wordt gelinkt aan het vak Technologische Opvoeding. Hierin komt een project transport aan bod. Doel van dit project is om in verschillende groepjes milieuvriendelijke transportmiddelen te ontwerpen en te maken. Dit wordt ondersteund door een cursus waarin verschillende soorten transport aan bod komen. De ruimtevaart komt in dit project nadrukkelijk naar voor. Our high school, for students who are in the first grade, is situated in Keerbergen, and is a part of the Koninklijk Atheneum Keerbergen. Our school has about 560 students, with an average age between 12 and 14 years old. Our participation in the ARISS project is linked with the course "Technological Education". In this course, the students have a project that has to do with transportation. The purpose of this project is to design and make a transportation device that is friendly to the environment. This project is supported with a syllabus where the students learn about the different means of transportation. Space travel is a big part of this project. Special Event Coinciding with AMSAT Symposium

All, Those of you into Edgar Allan Poe.there is a special treat if you come to this year's symposium. The famous poet is celebrating his 200th birthday this year. He lived in Baltimore for several years and died and was buried in the city. And there is a Poe Museum at the Baltimore house he lived in before his death. The year-long commemoration of Poe will culminate with a recreation of his funeral that occurs around the Symposium dates. Poe died on October 7, 1849. There will be a recreation of a wake for Poe from noon to 11 pm at the Poe House. This will be followed up with a mock-funeral for Poe on Sunday October 11 (12:30 and 4:30). John Astin (Gomez Addams from the Addams family fame) will officiate the funeral services. All, Those interested in attending the AMSAT Symposium in Baltimore this October, I just got a notice that Airtran has a sale to and from BWI until September 17. $39-119 with a 10 day advance purchase. Sign up now to get the best fares before they are taken by others. Airtran does charge for checked luggage. We will be posting the Symposium agenda this week. For planning purposes, the BoD meeting starts Thursday morning and runs until noon Friday. The symposium starts at 1 pm Friday and runs until noon Sunday. The AMSAT annual meeting with be Saturday afternoon. And there will be an ARISS ops meeting (all are invited) on Sunday.
