An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Marconi Commemoration Event, University of Rome "Tor Vergata", Rome, Italy on January 7. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 09:00 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and W6SRJ. The contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The University of Rome Tor Vergata is located in Rome, Italy. It is one of the largest research-based institutions in Italy. The University is an international center for research and education and it is well known for scientific studies. In recent years the activity of technology transfer and cooperation with other public and private organizations in different fields has obtained an increasingly important role. The University Hospital is located in a 600-hectares-campus, and it is considered a flagship of the University. It is well equipped with diagnostic and therapeutic vanguard structures and it has become a reference model at national and international levels. The University of Rome Tor Vergata was established in 1981 with the goal of providing high quality education for students preparing to meet the ever-evolving needs and opportunities of the 21st century workforce. The University is an academic establishment which combines a liberal arts tradition with emphasis on career orientation in the field of Economics, Engineering, Sciences and Medicine. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Today celebrate Nobel prize to father of the Radio, Guglielmo Marconi. Which benefit we have from his invention? 2. How and what teaching can take the new generations by school contacts? 3. How do you think could be improved or implemented the ARISS school contact? 4. Do you think that ham radio can be integrated with another experiments on ISS? 5. Can you envisage the ISS as potential relay node in the future interplanetary telecommunications network? 6. Do you like to use the amateur radio station on board ISS? 7. Do you recommend to new astronauts to participate to ARISS school contact? 8. The ISS can be considered our outposts in the space? 9. I'd like to know how does the spatio - temporal cognition change on ISS? 10. What's the role of the zero-gravity feeling (if any) on ISS? 11. Hello, and a (slightly late) Happy New Year to you from everyone involved with ARISS! Thanks for being with us during the last year, and we are already looking forward to many more contacts during 2010. Please do join us whenever you can! This week you can join us in listening to the ISS contact with the Marconi Commemoration Event, University of Rome "Tor Vergata", Rome, Italy. This will be a telebridge via W6SRJ. Contact is a go for: Thu 2010-01-07 09:00:14 UTC Audio from this contact will be fed into the IRLP 'Discovery' Reflector (9010) and the EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers. IRLP and Echolink audio is generally transmitted around 15 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. Please note that on Echolink there are automatic breaks of 1.5 seconds in the audio transmission. These occur every 2.5 minutes during the event. For your information, when any ARISS event is supported through the IRLP "Discovery" Reflector 9010, audio is also automatically streamed to the Internet. It is then available via the 'Discovery' Reflector's companion web site www.discoveryreflector.ca . Once on its main page, select "Audio Library" (left sidebar). The prompt to join the audio stream is posted at the top of this page. You can access the URL directly at www.discoveryreflector.ca:8000/listen.pls The audio on the Internet can be delayed by anything up to two minutes. ** Contact times are approximate. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report January 4, 2010 1. Upcoming School Contacts An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for the Marconi Commemoration Event to be held at the University of Rome "Tor Vergata" in Rome, Italy on Thursday, January 7 at 09:00 UTC. Students will speak to on-orbit astronaut Jeffrey Williams via telebridge station W6SRJ in California. ESRIN (European Space Research Institute) personnel will give presentations and provide leaflets to the students. Humanity Primary and Junior High School, Tou-cheng town, Taiwan has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Monday, January 11 at 06:53 UTC. The Chinese Taipei Amateur Radio League (CTARL) is sponsoring this event. Through this opportunity, students will learn about space and radio communications. 2. Cosmonaut Enjoys ARISS Contact Cosmonaut Maxim Suraev participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with students from Noginsk High School on December 10, 2009. ISS Ham Debrief Scheduled An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) debrief session has been scheduled with Expedition 20/21 crew members Nicole Stott, KE5GJN and Robert Thirsk, VA3CSA on Tuesday, January 5. The feedback provided by the astronauts will help ARISS update program procedures.
