Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report January 11, 2010 1. ARISS Featured at Marconi Commemoration Event On Thursday, January 7, students attending the University of Rome "Tor Vergata" Marconi Commemoration Event in Rome, Italy participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with on-orbit astronaut Jeffrey Williams, KD5TVQ. The contact was facilitated by telebridge station W6SRJ in California. An audience of 200 watched as eleven questions were asked and answered. After the contact, Princess Elettra Marconi, daughter of Guglielmo Marconi and Mr. Dieter Isakeit of ESA ESRIN (European Space Research Institute) Corporate Communication Office & Communication and Knowledge Department, sent greetings to the ISS crew. Presentations were given by ARISS mentor Francesco De Paolis as well as Mr. Augusto Cramarossa, Italian Space Agency, Head of Strategy, National and International, Mr. Massimo Pucini, Deputy Mayor of Moteporzio Catone town and Mrs. Marina Ruggeri, Director Department of Electronics Engineering - University "Tor Vergata." 2. ISS Ham Debrief Held An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) debrief session was held with Expedition 20/21 crew members Nicole Stott, KE5GJN and Robert Thirsk, VA3CSA on Tuesday, January 5. The feedback provided by the astronauts will help ARISS update program procedures. 3. ARISS News on Amateur Radio Newsline On January 8, Amateur Radio Newsline Report 1691 reported on two ARISS related items. The first news article under Ham Radio in Space was about the ARISS debrief that was held with astronauts Robert Thirsk and Nicole Stott. The second item covered the Marconi Commemoration Event held at the University of Rome on January 7. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Humanity Primary & Junior High School, Tou-cheng town, Taiwan, R.O.C on 11 Jan. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 06:53 UTC.The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and BN0JW. The contact should be audible over Taiwan and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Humanity primary and junior high school(HPJHS) is a public school which managed by private educational foundation. HPJHS is the first charter school in Taiwan, was established in 2002 as Jen-Wen Primary School. In 2006, for the well performance the JWPS was permitted by the Yi-Land county government, it became a school of grade 1-9. There are about 350 students in the school. Under the fund support of Humanity and Differential Education Foundation, the school employed 50 teachers to take exquisite care of the students. In HPJHS, the class are mix-aged, open classroom, teacher cooperation, theme-integrated, etc. The school intends to meet each student's individual needs, unwrap each child's gift, let every student have sound mental and physical health, well-prepared mind to face the coming challenge. Concerning the curriculum diversity, we invited the department of computer and communication engineering of Technology and Science Institute of Northern Taiwan joined this activity. That is why you can see some college students in the contact list. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. You have received many training for space task. Can you tell me what the most impressed you? 2. How long does it take to train an astronaut, who is well- qualified to go to the space? 3. Are you scared of going to space? If you are scared why do you want to go? 4. How many people can the space station hold? 5. Can you plant plants in the space station? If you had done before, can you tell us how will the plants grow in the space station? 6. How do you do exercise in the space? 7. Where does the oxygen you breath in the space station come from? 8. Where do you think is the most impressive spot / scenery? 9. Have people lighten a fire in the space station? What will the fire look like in the space station? 10. Is there any kind of animal that can go to the outer space with you? 11. Is it dizzy in space? How do you overcome it? 12. Have you ever seen any UFO up there in the space? 13. What if there was a meteorite that hit the space station and cause a hole? Is that dangerous? How can you face the problem? 14. What does the earth look like from the outer space? 15. Is the space suit broken before? Is there any defensive measure? 16. What are the other planets that you can see from the space except the moon? 17. Have you lost connection to earth? If you do, how do you handle it? 18. How does an astronaut sleep in the space? 19. Can you go on the internet in the space station (like Google or yahoo):? 20. Will an astronaut feel uneasy or inapplicable after returning to the earth from the space? 21. Had you ever seen the other satellite pass by the space station nearly? Are you scared? 22. How to take a shower or a bath in the space? 23. How long do you get a resources supplement from the earth? 24. What is the major work in the space? 25. Do you get a high salary? Would you please tell us how much it would be? 26. What should one do in the space if the Nature calls? Where will the excreta go up there in the space? 27. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Marconi Commemoration Event, University of Rome "Tor Vergata", Rome, Italy on January 7. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 09:00 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and W6SRJ. The contact should be audible over the west coast of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The University of Rome Tor Vergata is located in Rome, Italy. It is one of the largest research-based institutions in Italy. The University is an international center for research and education and it is well known for scientific studies. In recent years the activity of technology transfer and cooperation with other public and private organizations in different fields has obtained an increasingly important role. The University Hospital is located in a 600-hectares-campus, and it is considered a flagship of the University. It is well equipped with diagnostic and therapeutic vanguard structures and it has become a reference model at national and international levels. The University of Rome Tor Vergata was established in 1981 with the goal of providing high quality education for students preparing to meet the ever-evolving needs and opportunities of the 21st century workforce. The University is an academic establishment which combines a liberal arts tradition with emphasis on career orientation in the field of Economics, Engineering, Sciences and Medicine. Hello, and a (slightly late) Happy New Year to you from everyone involved with ARISS! Thanks for being with us during the last year, and we are already looking forward to many more contacts during 2010. Please do join us whenever you can! This week you can join us in listening to the ISS contact with the Marconi Commemoration Event, University of Rome "Tor Vergata", Rome, Italy. This will be a telebridge via W6SRJ. Contact is a go for: Thu 2010-01-07 09:00:14 UTC Audio from this contact will be fed into the IRLP 'Discovery' Reflector (9010) and the EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers. IRLP and Echolink audio is generally transmitted around 15 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. Please note that on Echolink there are automatic breaks of 1.5 seconds in the audio transmission. These occur every 2.5 minutes during the event. For your information, when any ARISS event is supported through the IRLP "Discovery" Reflector 9010, audio is also automatically streamed to the Internet. It is then available via the 'Discovery' Reflector's companion web site www.discoveryreflector.ca . Once on its main page, select "Audio Library" (left sidebar). The prompt to join the audio stream is posted at the top of this page. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report January 4, 2010 1. Upcoming School Contacts An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for the Marconi Commemoration Event to be held at the University of Rome "Tor Vergata" in Rome, Italy on Thursday, January 7 at 09:00 UTC. Students will speak to on-orbit astronaut Jeffrey Williams via telebridge station W6SRJ in California. ESRIN (European Space Research Institute) personnel will give presentations and provide leaflets to the students. Humanity Primary and Junior High School, Tou-cheng town, Taiwan has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Monday, January 11 at 06:53 UTC. The Chinese Taipei Amateur Radio League (CTARL) is sponsoring this event. Through this opportunity, students will learn about space and radio communications. 2. Cosmonaut Enjoys ARISS Contact Cosmonaut Maxim Suraev participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with students from Noginsk High School on December 10, 2009.
