An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Funakata Elementary School, Nagoya, Aichi, Japan on 29 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 08:20 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and 8N2FE.The contact should be audible over Japan and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Funakata elementary school was established at 1873. We have 22 classes and 715 students.Our school is near Atsuta Jingu Shrine (that is old and big Shrine.), and a very old elementary school. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Is there anything we can do as elementary school students to prepare to become astronauts? 2. Is it difficult to live in zero gravity? 3. How do you know when it's morning, day and night in space? 4. Can you play musical instruments in space? 5. What do you do to relax in space? 6. What kind of hobbies can you do in space? 7. When do you sleep on the space ship? 8. What does the moment of zero gravity when you leave and return to Earth feel like? 9. What kind of medical treatment do you have if you get injured in space? 10. What is your favorite space food? 11. Is it difficult to breathe on the space ship? 12. What did you think the first time you saw the Earth from space? 13. What kinds of things does a pilot need to prepare in his or her mind for each flight? 14. Have you ever seen a UFO? 15. What do distant stars look like from the space ship? 16. Is there wind in space? 17. What do falling stars or the constellations look like from space? 18. What is the most fun thing you can do in the space ship? 19. How big is your room on the space station? 20. Why is physical strength important for going into space? 21. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report October 25, 2010 1. Upcoming School Contacts Funakata Elementary School, Nagoya, Aichi, Japan has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Friday, October 29 at 08:20 UTC. The school was established in 1873 and has an enrollment of 698 students. It hopes to pique the children's interest in science through this radio activity. S.K. Bukit Damansara, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Tuesday, November 2 at 18:02 UTC. The contact will be made from the satellite ground station at the National Planetarium in conjunction with the "Prime Minister's - National Space Challenge Trophy 2010" event. The planetarium teaches space science and has an exclusive section displaying a mock up of the ISS as well as a rocket engine. Space participant Sheikh Muszaphar is frequently invited to schools to give talks to the students, encouraging them to study space science. 2. Successful ARISS Contact with Carine Primary School Carine Primary School in Perth, Western Australia participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with Doug Wheelock, KF5BOC on Tuesday, October 19 via telebridge station WH6PN in Hawaii. The school incorporated this contact into its science curriculum and invited guest speakers, including representatives from an amateur radio club and the science center, Scitech to give talks to the youth. Students from Kindergarten through grade 7 prepared for the contact by studying and researching various space related topics using IT and online resources, including NASA Web sites. 3. ARISS International Team Meeting Held The ARISS International Team monthly teleconference was held on Tuesday, October 19, 2010. A status was given on the amateur radio equipment that will be installed in the Columbus module in early 2011. QST Covers ARISS The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) November QST's column called "75, 50 and 25 Years Ago" has a partial column that features the November 1985 QST cover. The column talks about the cover photo, which shows the space shuttle and photographs of two youth groups receiving Slow Scan Television transmissions. The transmitting was done by Astronaut Tony England, W0ORE, when he was onboard the Challenger. His aim was to operate the Amateur Radio station onboard to pique students' interest in science and technology.

Years ago I said APRS was bad, but I never thought it would ever get this bad. Things definitely aren't like they were in the MIR days, when you could make multiple contacts a pass with minimal equipment. I could build a setup for packet that every single one of my packets would get through, but what good would the do? So I could have a QSO with myself? So I give up. The APRS'ers should build a dedicated satellite just for APRS, and their QRM should be limited to just that one satellite, unless they won't to build more. Hell, I'd even donate to it just to clean things up! KB7ADL

Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report October 18, 2010 1. Upcoming School Contact An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Carine Primary School in Perth, Western Australia, Australia on Tuesday, October 19 at 07:06 UTC via telebridge station WH6PN in Hawaii. The school has incorporated the contact into its science curriculum. Guest speakers have been invited, including representatives from an amateur radio club and the science center, Scitech. Students from Kindergarten through grade 7 have been involved in research and other activities in preparation for this event, using IT and online resources, including the NASA Web site. 2. George Observatory Contact Successful On Saturday, October 16, an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held with scouts and astronomy club members attending the Astronomy Day event at George Observatory in Needville, Texas. This was a telebridge contact via station WH6PN in Hawaii. Approximately 150 people attended and listened as Doug Wheelock, KF5BOC answered 12 questions about life in space posed to him by the youth. As part of the event, scout troops set up an amateur radio station near the observatory to conduct their all-day Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) radio contacts and also worked on Radio Merit Badges. The Brazos Valley Amateur Radio Club was on hand to assist with JOTA activities and prepared for afternoon satellite contacts with an Arrow hand-held antenna. 3. ARRL Article on ARISS Contacts The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) ran a story on recent ARISS contacts including those with Windsor Central School District, Utah Scouts and IRSEA, as well Doug Wheelock's many general contacts. Amateur Radio Newsline Covers ARISS On October 15, the Amateur Radio Newsline Report 1731 included two ARISS related stories. "Ham Radio in Space: ARISSat-1 Enroute to Russia" announces ARISSat's arrival at JSC and its planned shipment to Russia. "Challenger Learning Center Inaugurates Ham Station" is about the station set up at the CLC in Oregon, Ohio to get students interested in STEM studies. ARISSat-1 Safety Review Held The Johnson Space Center Payload Safety Review Panel performed a Phase 2 flight safety review of ARISSat-1 on Wednesday and Thursday, October 13 and 14 in Houston. As soon as the updates requested are incorporated, the hazard reports will be approved and then passed on for the next phase of the review process.

An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Carine Primary School, Perth, Western Australia, Australia on 19 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 07:06 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and WH6PN. The contact should be audible over Hawaii and adjacent area. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English.. Carine Primary is a school with a highly professional staff and approx 627 students ranging from Kindergarten to Year 7. It is situated on the coastal strip, 15 kilometres north-west of Perth in Western Australia. The school is well known for its excellent academic performance, Arts and IT programmes, sporting achievements and support given by the parent body and the wider community. What does it feel like when you're breaking through Earth's atmosphere? 10. What are you allowed to take with you in space and do you have a baggage allowance? 11. How many kilometres per hour does the rocket travel and how long does it take to get to the International Space Station? 12. What is the worst thing that has happened to you while you've been in space and how did you solve it? 13. What are your initial fears and thoughts when you first step outside the space station into space? 14. What type of food do you have on the Space Station? 15. We are taught that to grow a plant, it needs soil, water and sunlight so how are you able to grow a plant in outer space? Audio from this contact will be fed into the IRLP 'Discovery' Reflector (9010) and the EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers. IRLP and Echolink audio is generally transmitted around 15 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at the George Observatory, Needville, Texas on 16 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 17:03 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and WH6PN. The contact should be audible over Hawaii and adjacent area. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. October 16, 2010 is designated as Astronomy Day at George Observatory, located in Fort Bend County, Texas, near Houston. The event is sponsored by various astronomy clubs and the Houston Museum of Natural Science. There will be plenty of activities designed to educate children, and peak their interest in astronomy and science. The children interviewing the ISS crew will be Boy Scouts and youth members of several astronomy clubs. In the evening the children will learn how to track the ISS across the night sky, will be able to look through the three telescopes at the observatory, and will be given "sky tours" with the aid of green laser pointers. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Is it hard to take a shower in space? 2. When did you decide to become an astronaut? 3. What would you do if your space suit got a hole in it? 4. Who inspired you to become an astronaut? 5. Can you describe how it feels to do a spacewalk? 6. Michele Mallardi, IZ7EVR introduced the ARISS event with a presentation to an audience of 100 students and visitors. Obscurations from the ISS structure may have hindered the contact, allowing time for five questions to be answered. The contact was part of a professional education program, "Promotion of the characteristics of the Puglia region" which dealt with space communications, space life, space achievements, advantage of space research, use of man-made satellites and the International Space Station. 3. ARISSat-1 Safety Review this Week The Johnson Space Center Payload Safety Review Panel will perform a Phase 2 flight safety review of ARISSat-1 on the mornings of Wednesday and Thursday, October 13 and 14 in Houston. Participation in the review will include U.S. and Russian ARISSat team members as well as RSC-Energia safety specialists. 4. Challenger Learning Center Opens Ham Station On Monday October 4, a satellite ground station was opened at the Challenger Learning Center (CLC) in Oregon, Ohio. Please join us in listening to the ISS contact with IRSEA, Bisceglie, Italy on Tuesday 5th October at 15:31 UTC. This will be a telebridge and the Ground Station will be K6DUE. Audio from this contact will be fed into the EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers. Audio is generally transmitted around 15 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. Please note that on Echolink there are automatic breaks of 1.5 seconds in the audio transmission. These occur every 2.5 minutes during the event. ** Contact times are approximate. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report October 4, 2010 1. Upcoming School Contact An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for IRSEA, a non-profit Institute of Research and Education, in Bisceglie, Italy on Tuesday, October 5 at 15:28 UTC via telebridge station K6DUE in Greenbelt, Maryland. The contact is part of a professional education program called "Promotion of the characteristics of the Puglia region." The subject matter includes space communications, space life, space achievements, advantage of space research, use of man-made satellites and the International Space Station. ARISS Presentations to be Given at AMSAT Symposium The AMSAT (Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation) Space Symposium will be held Friday - Sunday, October 8 - 10 in Elk Grove Village, Illinois. ARISS Delegate Rosalie White wrote a paper for the meeting called "ARISS = Education." Keith Pugh will give a talk on satellite demonstrations with students and will present an overview of the ARISS team this past year. MAI-75 Experiment Activated The Russian ISS crew members activated the MAI-75 (Moscow Aviation Institute) experiment on Monday - Wednesday, September 27 - 29. The system was operated in Martin 1 mode. Among those who captured Slow Scan Television (SSTV) images transmitted by the crew were ground stations in Asia, Europe and Africa. Astronaut Training Status Astronaut Don Pettit, KD5MDT participated in an ARISS special topics training session on Tuesday, September 28. Several capabilities of the Kenwood system including SSTV and crossband operations were covered. Pettit is slated to fly with Expedition 30 in November 2011. 5. AMSAT Announces that ARISSat-1 is Ready to Ship The Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT) posted a report on its Web site giving a description of ARISSat-1 and its capabilities - simultaneous 2m FM, CW, BPSK and transponder transmissions. ARRL Covers ARISSat-1 The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) carried a Web story on the status of ARISSat-1. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at I.R.S.E.A. - Institute of Research and Education, Bisceglie, Italy on 5 October. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 15:28 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and K6DUE. The contact should be audible over the eastern U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The I.R.S.E.A. - Institute of Research and Education non profit - whose registered office is in Bisceglie 29/D Oslo Road - works in the Northern area of Bari and Foggia. It aims at a link, throughout synergic cooperation, between the world of University Research and the working experiences of trade unions, company organizations and liberal professions to be a concrete reference to the fields of education, development and innovating research. I.R.S.E.A. worked in regional and interregional area, in the following business departments: agricultural food; tourism; environment; company finance; trade; public administration; small and average enterprises, and in different areas, as: Education for job - through educational activities to support manager and the business universe; to job - through educational activities to help young people, post-graduate and qualified looking for a job; vocational giudance - through support activities to choose one's studies; Studies and researches about local social and economic situations, with particular reference to small and average enterprises; European Economic Community projects; Community funds for small and average enterprises Participants will ask as many of the following questions (translated) as time allows: 1. What do you do in your spare time? 10. Does microgravity have any influence on the perception of music? 11. What kind of diseases can you catch on board the ISS? 12. How do you handle the body care? 13. Does the sensation of wet and dry feel like on Earth? 14. Why do astronauts lose weight in weightlessness? 15. What are the major impacts of zero gravity on the human body? 16. Are there any smells in Space? 17. Would there be any danger for you if a meteorite hit the ISS? 18. Do you enjoy having meals in zero gravity? 19. What are the tasks of Italian astronauts on board the ISS? 20. Do you cultivate plants on board the ISS?
