Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report October 18, 2010 1. Upcoming School Contact An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Carine Primary School in Perth, Western Australia, Australia on Tuesday, October 19 at 07:06 UTC via telebridge station WH6PN in Hawaii. The school has incorporated the contact into its science curriculum. Guest speakers have been invited, including representatives from an amateur radio club and the science center, Scitech. Students from Kindergarten through grade 7 have been involved in research and other activities in preparation for this event, using IT and online resources, including the NASA Web site. 2. George Observatory Contact Successful On Saturday, October 16, an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held with scouts and astronomy club members attending the Astronomy Day event at George Observatory in Needville, Texas. This was a telebridge contact via station WH6PN in Hawaii. Approximately 150 people attended and listened as Doug Wheelock, KF5BOC answered 12 questions about life in space posed to him by the youth. As part of the event, scout troops set up an amateur radio station near the observatory to conduct their all-day Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) radio contacts and also worked on Radio Merit Badges. The Brazos Valley Amateur Radio Club was on hand to assist with JOTA activities and prepared for afternoon satellite contacts with an Arrow hand-held antenna. 3. ARRL Article on ARISS Contacts The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) ran a story on recent ARISS contacts including those with Windsor Central School District, Utah Scouts and IRSEA, as well Doug Wheelock's many general contacts. Amateur Radio Newsline Covers ARISS On October 15, the Amateur Radio Newsline Report 1731 included two ARISS related stories. "Ham Radio in Space: ARISSat-1 Enroute to Russia" announces ARISSat's arrival at JSC and its planned shipment to Russia. "Challenger Learning Center Inaugurates Ham Station" is about the station set up at the CLC in Oregon, Ohio to get students interested in STEM studies. ARISSat-1 Safety Review Held The Johnson Space Center Payload Safety Review Panel performed a Phase 2 flight safety review of ARISSat-1 on Wednesday and Thursday, October 13 and 14 in Houston. ARISSat passed the review with modifications to the hazard reports. As soon as the updates requested are incorporated, the hazard reports will be approved and then passed on for the next phase of the review process.

An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Carine Primary School, Perth, Western Australia, Australia on 19 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 07:06 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and WH6PN. The contact should be audible over Hawaii and adjacent area. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English.. Carine Primary is a school with a highly professional staff and approx 627 students ranging from Kindergarten to Year 7. It is situated on the coastal strip, 15 kilometres north-west of Perth in Western Australia. The school is well known for its excellent academic performance, Arts and IT programmes, sporting achievements and support given by the parent body and the wider community. The school priorities are Science, Higher Order Thinking Skills and Co-operative Learning Strategies. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What is it like living in space and what do you miss about living on Earth? 2. When you breathe in oxygen in space, do you still breathe out carbon dioxide and where does it go? 3. Is there a pilot on the International Space Station or do you take turns controlling the space shuttle? 4. What are Pleiades and have you seen one? 5. What sort of preparation does it take to withstand the conditions of space? 6. How do you get into bed and sleep without floating around? 7. Are you doing research on the International Space Station and if so, what are you researching? 8. Are there any sensory machines to warn you of meteorites? 9. What does it feel like when you're breaking through Earth's atmosphere? 10. What are you allowed to take with you in space and do you have a baggage allowance? 11. How many kilometres per hour does the rocket travel and how long does it take to get to the International Space Station? 12. What is the worst thing that has happened to you while you've been in space and how did you solve it? 13. What are your initial fears and thoughts when you first step outside the space station into space? 14. What type of food do you have on the Space Station? 15. We are taught that to grow a plant, it needs soil, water and sunlight so how are you able to grow a plant in outer space? IRLP and Echolink audio is generally transmitted around 15 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. October 16, 2010 is designated as Astronomy Day at George Observatory, located in Fort Bend County, Texas, near Houston. The event is sponsored by various astronomy clubs and the Houston Museum of Natural Science. There will be plenty of activities designed to educate children, and peak their interest in astronomy and science. The children interviewing the ISS crew will be Boy Scouts and youth members of several astronomy clubs. In the evening the children will learn how to track the ISS across the night sky, will be able to look through the three telescopes at the observatory, and will be given "sky tours" with the aid of green laser pointers. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Is it hard to take a shower in space? 2. When did you decide to become an astronaut? 3. What would you do if your space suit got a hole in it? 4. Who inspired you to become an astronaut? 5. Can you describe how it feels to do a spacewalk? 6.
