Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report March 15, 2010 1. Upcoming School Contacts An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled with 18 Dimotiko Scholeio Peristeriou in Athens, Greece on Tuesday, March 16 at 11:37 UTC. The contact was integrated into the school curriculum through astronomy and amateur radio lectures and special attention was given to the ISS regarding its role in humanity and science. The ISS courses were based on ESA's "ISS Education Kit." The amateur radio presentation included a demonstration of the equipment and its operation. Shiogama Daini Junior High School in Shiogama, Japan has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Thursday, March 25 at 07:44 UTC. To prepare for the contact, the youth studied astronomy and were introduced to the Hubble Space Telescope. They learned about radio communication and some students continued their studies and prepared for their amateur radio license exams. 2. JAXA Astronaut Participates in ARISS Contact with Alma Mater On Tuesday, March 9, JAXA's Soichi Noguchi, KD5TVP participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with his alma mater, Ikaruga Elementary School, in Taishi Town, Japan. Approximately 350 guests watched as fifteen students asked their questions of the on-orbit astronaut. This ARISS activity was the highlight of the Ikaruga science curriculum on environmental issues and received significant media coverage. 3. Astronaut Training Status On Monday, March 15, astronaut Paolo Nespoli, IZ0JPA will take part in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) simulated contact with students from Quintino Sella, Biella, Italy. The contact is slated for approximately 13:30 UTC. Audio will be available on IRLP (Internet Radio Linking Project). This training session is a terrestrial-based amateur radio contact using ARISS equivalent equipment. 4. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at 18 Dimotiko Scholeio Peristeriou, Peristeri (Athens), Greece on 16 March. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 11:37 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and SX1ISS. The contact should be audible over Greece and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. 18th Dimotiko (primary) school of Peristeri has 145 pupils in 9 classes. The school is located in Peristeri city, about 7 kilometres from of the center of Athens. The same building complex comprises the 46th primary school of Peristeri with 120 pupils in 9 classes and 3 Kindergarten classes with 75 children. The ARISS project was initiated by the Association of Parents and chaperones of 18th Dimotiko School with the help of the radio amateur SV1HER, the teachers and the principal. The pupils benefited from a special program covering Space, human activities in Space, the International Space Station and amateur radio activities. They also followed special training programs on environment, Olympic education and a special program named "Kallipateiras." For the ARISS event, the neighbouring Primary schools of Peristeri were invited to participate (sixth class of each School). The total number of participants amounts to about 480 pupils. The pupils from the eight participating schools prepared questions and the 18th Dimotiko School chose 20 questions for the Space Talk. The Mayor and Vice Mayor accepted to host the ARISS event in the new City Hall amphitheatre. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. When someone travels to another country, he usually says that his home country is the most beautiful. Traveling in the universe, do you believe that the most beautiful planet is the earth? 2. You know that the names of the planets are those of ancient Greek Gods? What are your feelings now that you are communicating with the country of the twelve Gods of Olympus? 3. How will climate changes affect the earth in the future? 4. Is the job of an astronaut a difficult one? 5. Which are the necessary preparations before a spaceship sets off? 6. Would you live for ever in a space station or on the moon? 7. What are the necessary qualifications for someone who wishes to become an astronaut? 8. Why have you decided to be an astronaut? 9. Is there any pollution in space? 10. Would you like your family to be with you? 11. Can space teach us how to save the Earth? 12. How is it possible that your oxygen never ends up? 13. How do you spend your free time? 14. Have you ever seen a "black hole" in space? 15. How did you feel during the launch? 16. How and where do you sleep? 17. What is your research about? Is it difficult? 18. What would you do if an accident happened on the ISS? 19. What is Earth like from space? 20. What effect has zero gravity on your body? Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report March 8, 2010 1. Upcoming School Contacts An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled with Ikaruga Elementary School in Taishi Town, Hyogo, Japan on Tuesday, March 9 at 07:28 UTC. In the classroom, students learned about their local environment as well as that of the earth on a global scale, and studied environmental issues such as global warming. They also researched the ISS to prepare for this contact. This activity is a crew pick of JAXA astronaut Soichi Noguchi who is an alumnus of the school. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled with 18 Dimotiko Scholeio Peristeriou in Athens, Attica Region, Greece on Tuesday, March 16 at 11:37 UTC. The contact was integrated in the school curriculum through astronomy and amateur radio lectures and special attention was given to the ISS regarding its role in humanity and science. JAXA Astronaut Enjoys ARISS Contact with Alma Mater Expedition 22 astronaut Soichi Noguchi, KD5TVP participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with his alma mater, Hamasuka Junior High School, in Chigasaki City, Japan on Thursday, March 4. Approximately 300 attended the event and watched as fifteen students asked their questions. Three newspapers and three television stations, including Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) covered the event. 3. ARISS to Receive Boselli Award The "Associazione Italiana Radioascolto" A.I.R. (Italian Radio Listeners Association) has awarded the Boselli prize 2010 to the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) program. The A.I.R. Board found that ARISS meets every requirement for the award, which is bestowed on "radio enthusiasts who promote the culture of radio, showing the importance of radio communications to hundreds of young students in Italy, Europe and beyond, spreading the use of radio from the forefront of science in the vast outer space down to small classrooms." The prize will be delivered on May 8 in Faenza during the A.I.R. annual meeting. 4. Astronaut Training Status On Monday, March 15, astronaut Paolo Nespoli, IZ0JPA will take part in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) simulated contact with students from Quintino Sella, Biella, Italy. A Russian training session was held with astronaut Tracy Caldwell, KF5DBF which covered the use of ARISS equipment. Caldwell will fly with Expedition 23 in April. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Ikaruga Elementary School, Taishi Town, Hyogo, Japan, on 9 March. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 07:28 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and 8J3NS. The contact should be audible over Japan and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Japanese. Ikaruga Elementary school is located in the west of the Taishi-cho where was famous place with Shotokutaishi. Souichi Noguchi graduated this school. Participants will ask as many of the following questions (translated) as time allows: 1. Feelings when going out from the space platform to space were how? 2. Is it a living in the space platform and what kind of thing is a serious thing? 3. What kind of thing is to have been impressed when going to space? 4. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 10:09 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and 8J1SN. The contact should be audible over Japan and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Japanese. Hamasuka Junior High School was established at 1975. Our school has 546 students (15 classes). Souichi Noguchi graduated from our school. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report March 1, 2010 1. Upcoming School Contact Expedition 22 astronaut Soichi Noguchi, KD5TVP will participate in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with Hamasuka Junior High School in Chigasaki City, Kanagawa, Japan on Thursday, March 4. This is a direct contact and is scheduled for 10:09 UTC. Noguchi is an alumnus of the school. 2. Timothy Creamer Chats with Doncaster Students via ARISS Contact On Thursday, February 25, Timothy Creamer, KC5WKI spoke with Doncaster Primary School students in Doncaster, Victoria, Australia via an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact. The connection was made through telebridge ground station VK4KHZ in Queensland. Two hundred fifty guests attended the event and watched as the students asked nineteen questions of the on-orbit astronaut. The students were involved in many activities leading up to the contact in their Physics, Space, Geography, and English classes. During one such activity, the students researched a place in the solar system and created a short television program for the intergalactic travel show "Postcards." 3.
