Audio from this contact will be fed into the EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers. Audio is generally transmitted around 15 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. Please note that on Echolink there are automatic breaks of 1.5 seconds in the audio transmission. These occur every 2.5 minutes during the event. ** Contact times are approximate. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Pita Kallak School, Kuujjuaq, Quebec, Canada, on 20 May. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 16:28 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between OR4ISS and ON4ISS. The contact should be audible over portions of Europe. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Kuujjuaq, Nunavik's largest community, is located on the west shore of the Koksoak River, about 50 km upstream from Ungava Bay. Daily life in this community is closely tied to the mighty river. The boreal forest is present around Kuujjuaq. Patches of black spruce and larch stand in marshy valleys. Kuujjuaq also witnesses annual migrations of the George River caribou herd. These animals pass through the region throughout August and September. Kuujjuaq was known before by another name, that of Fort Chimo. 'Chimo' is a mispronunciation of the phrase saimuk, 'Let's shake hands!' Early fur traders were often welcomed with this phrase which they eventually adopted as the name of the trading post. The construction of a U.S. Air Force base (Crystal 1) in 1942 on the westshore of the Koksoak River, the site of today's settlement, and the occupation of the site by the American army between 1941 and 1945 sped up the development of the community. After the end of World War II, the United States turned the base over to the Canadian government. In 1948, a Catholic mission was established, followed by a nursing station, a school and a weather station. When the HBC moved upstream closer to the airstrips in 1958, it was followed by the remaining families that still lived across the river at Fort Chimo. In 1961, a co-operative was created. Do you feel weird and is it hard to be weightless? 15. Why is it dark in space? 16. What do you miss the most on earth? 17. Do you think there is life elsewhere? 18. Did any astronaut ever bring pets on board Space Station? 19. What education do you need to become an astronaut? 20. How do you wash yourself? 21. What happens when you get sick? 22. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report May 17, 2010 1. Upcoming School Contacts Pita Kallak School in Kuujjuaq, Quebec, Canada has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Thursday, May 20 at 16:28 UTC via station ON4ISS in Belgium. The school plans to form a space club with participants from all grade levels. The students will learn about the ISS and radio protocol through video, the internet and guest speakers and will create projects (mobiles, posters, banners, murals) related to these subjects and display them in "Mission Control" (the gym). The Wireless Institute of Australia (WIA) in Bayswater, Victoria, Australia has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Saturday, May 29 at 10:43 UTC via ON4ISS in Belgium. The WIA will hold a special dinner to celebrate its centenary and has invited students from local schools in Canberra to make an ARISS school contact on that evening. It is anticipated that this dinner will be a high key event with Australia wide coverage. 2. Successful ARISS Contact Held with Komoro Higashi Junior High On Friday, May 14, Komoro Higashi Junior High School students in Komoro, Nagano, Japan contacted onboard astronaut Soichi Noguchi, KD5TVP via the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) program. Prior to the event, children visited Nobeyama Radio Observatory and worked on radio kits as part of their science curriculum. Over 140 students, parents and guests watched as 15 students had their questions answered during the contact, while 2 television stations and 5 newspapers provided media coverage. 3. MAI-75 Experiment Activated The MAI-75 (Moscow Aviation Institute) experiment was activated on Friday, May 14. The ISS crew transmitted several SSTV (Slow Scan Television) images which were received by ground stations in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. ARISS at Dayton Hamvention Dayton Hamvention 2010 was held at the Hara Arena Complex in Dayton, Ohio over the May 14-16 weekend. The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) and the Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT) manned exhibition booths at the event. Gould Smith, WA4SXM, AMSAT Project Manager for ARISSat-1, gave a presentation on the satellite. The ARISSat-1 prototype was on exhibit and demonstrated to the crowds. ARRL held a Teachers Workshop and distributed ARISS bookmarks to educators interested in the ARISS program. The Dayton Hamvention is an internationally attended amateur radio convention that draws crowds of 25,000 annually.

Hello All, ISS SSTV signals where heard at 14 May 2010. The transmissions started arround 12:48 UTC for the MAI-75 experiment. If you have received images please send them via the ARISS SSTV submission page: http://www.amsat.org/amsat/ariss/SSTV/submit.php We may not be able to display every image because of quality or duplication . But we keep them in the archieve for futher investigation and maybe visible later. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Komoro Higashi Junior High School, Komoro , Nagano, Japan on 14 May. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 11:17 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and 8N0KH. The contact should be audible over Japan. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Japanese. Komoro Higashi Junior High School is a public junior high school with 750 students from 7th to 9th grade. It offers a subject called "General Education" which all students have for two hours each week; in this class students choose their themes and then write reports on them. Recently "Space" has been one of the topics students choose most often. One reason for this is that last year it was the International Year of Astronomy. There was also an eclipse here on July 22nd and Koichi Wakata, a Japanese astronaut, started work aboard the ISS as the first Japanese to remain there for a long duration. In addition, last year, Kimiya Yui was chosen by JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) to be a new Japanese astronaut. His hometown is just about 20 miles away from the school so some of the students and a teacher went to meet him and have pictures taken together. JAXA supports the school's program and sent a professor to give a lecture to students about space and the ISS. The students observed the eclipse and they also visited Nobeyama Radio Observatory in the summer. Alongside these classes, students have been making radios to learn about radio communication and understand how receivers work; they have also made water powered rockets. Through these activities, students have enhanced their knowledge about space, the ISS and communication with the ISS through ham radio. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Why do you want to be an astronaut? 2. What does space look like, especially earth's atmosphere? 3. What's a good memory you have from the ISS? 4. How do shooting stars and auroras look from the ISS? 5. What was something that scared you, for example, a lift off? 6. What happens if you swing a baseball bat? 7. What's a message that you'd like to share with the people on earth? 8. How do you know it's time to sleep, when day light and night times are always changing? 9. How do you know which season it is? 10. What are some of the secrets that keep you healthy on the ISS? 11. Have you had any difficulties, problems or mistakes from anything that happened on the ISS? 12. If you become sick, are there different medicines you use on the ISS as opposed to on earth? 13. According to the theory of relatively, time goes slower in very fast objects. So, do the clocks on the ISS go slightly slower than the ones on earth? 14. Can you visually see the effects of global warming, pollution or environmental abuse on the earth? 15. In your free time, what do you want to do on the ISS? 16. What do you need to do in order to become an astronaut? 17. Do you believe in alternate life forms in outer space? 18. How do you prevent space sickness? 19. What's the first thing you'd like to do when you return to earth? 20. Is it true that you become taller while living aboard the ISS? Hello everyone, This news was in the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report for May 10, 2010. If we wait for the weekend AMSAT News Service cycle this opportunity will have passed. MAI-75 Experiments Planned MAI-75 (Moscow Aviation Institute) experiments are planned for May 13 from 10:00 - 17:00 UTC and May 14 from 12:45 - 16:00 UTC.
