How about letting us know why there are no casual contacts anymore and only rehearsed and choreographed public shows. I read many times about how busy the astronauts are but it is glaringly apparent they have no interest or are refraining from unrehearsed contacts. They could at least turn on the cross band repeater. The navy had enough control over the amateur radio with the packet. Frankly, I am personally no longer interested in talking to the astronauts but the repeater was a lot of fun. Someone please make it happen. A mere citizen pat

Hi all, Let me repeat a message that is sent out with every announcement I make with regards to ARISS activities and upcoming school contacts: Lately there have been some comments on the various bulletin boards about having general contacts or leaving the packet or crossband repeater on. Remember that ARISS is a guest onboard the ISS and if the crew elects to not turn something on or to operate, then that is their decision. ARISS can only suggest; never demand. Like I indicate in my announcements. If the crew member is so inclined, then they get on the radio. As with anything in society, the ISS crew have many different interests and a very heavy work load. Some have been a ham for many years before going on orbit and thus may make a random contact; many have had next to no experience playing radio and get on only sporadically. There have been quite a few who have gotten their license right before going up so they often times only get on for the scheduled school contacts. If they had not gotten their license; then even the school contact list would have suffered as for some expeditions there were no scheduled hams going up. We can thank Kenneth N5VHO and the rest of the hams down at JSC for organizing the classes and pushing for everyone to have a license. You would not believe the small amount of time the astronauts have for studying and getting their license as they are in ISS training right up until they launch. So ARISS does like to thank the astronauts for their very valuable time. For every school contact, the crew is told how to leave the radio configured after the contact. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report June 28, 2010 1. Upcoming School Contacts Summer camp "Astronauts in Forest," Perugia, Italy has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Friday, July 2 at 19:50 UTC via telebridge station ON4ISS in Belgium. The camp teaches youth why it is necessary to study and protect the environment. It explains that space research is very important for the future of our planet and younger generations and it also initiates the children in the use of scientific instruments. Cavett Kids Foundation's Camp Cavett, based out of OU Medical Center in Kingston, Oklahoma, has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Thursday, July 8 at 20:35 UTC. The mission of the Cavett Kids Foundation is to provide a forum of support through various camps, events, and programs for children with life-threatening and chronic illnesses while promoting character, coping skills, and connection. Using ARRL (American Radio Relay League) lesson plans, children will be introduced to the basics of radio wave propagation. Local radio clubs will assist with demonstrations and hands on activities. 2. Japanese Club Talks to ISS via ARISS Contact On Wednesday, June 23, Asahi Manabiya, a volunteer club in Owariasahi, Japan, took part in a direct Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact. Approximately 145 people attended the event and watched as the youth asked 23 questions of Expedition 23/24 astronaut Tracy Caldwell-Dyson, KF5DBF. This contact was a featured activity used by the club to pique children's interest in natural science. The event drew media attention and was covered by one radio station, two television stations and a newspaper. 3. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Asahi Manabiya, Owariasahi, Aichi, Japan on 23 June. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 13:07 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and 8N2OA. The contact should be audible over Japan. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Asahi Manabiya is a kind of Volunteer club in Owariasahi city. We have about 50 members who consist of pupils and students. We selected the contact menbers from junior high school and elementary school in Owariasahi city. They are learning the space and amateur radio from early May. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Is a blackout on the spaceship scary? 2. What do you do if you get sick in space? 3. What is the mission of the ISS? 4. What does it feel like to wear a space suit? 5. Can you see any black holes? 6. Does the rocket have a bathroom? 7. How do you sleep at night? 8. What kind of sweets do you have in space? 9. Where do you get the courage to come frightening things? 10. What do you do if you catch a cold or get a toothache? 11. What does space look like from the spaceship? 12. Do you clean the spaceship? 13. What did you think the first time you saw the Earth from space? 14. Which of your experiments is the most fun? 15. Does time pass differently in space and on Earth? 16. What do you eat, and how? 17. What does zero gravity feel like? 18. Can you cook in space? 19. Do you think there are aliens? 20. Do stars look bigger from space? 21. I heard that the Earth is blue. What color are the other planets? 22. What is the time difference between Earth and space? 23. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report June 21, 2010 1. Upcoming School Contacts Asahi Manabiya in Owariasahi, Aichi, Japan, has been scheduled for a direct Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Wednesday, June 23 at 12:48 UTC. Asahi Manabiya is a volunteer club with approximately 50 members which hopes to pique children's interest in natural science including electrical and electronic phenomena through this ARISS activity. Quebec Rangers, southern Quebec, Canada has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Friday, July 2 at 19:45 UTC via telebridge station ON4ISS in Belgium. Canadian Rangers are dedicated, knowledgeable members of the Army and reflect the diversity of the communities they belong to. Many Canadian Rangers are Aboriginal and there are a total of 23 different languages spoken. Easily recognized by their red sweatshirts and ball hats, the Canadian Rangers play an important role in advancing public recognition of Canada's Inuit, First Nations and Métis. 2. ARISS International Team Meeting Held The monthly Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) teleconference was held with the International Partners on Tuesday, June 15. Discussions included ARISS elections, the Columbus Module equipment status and an update on ARISSat-1 progress. Minutes have been posted to the ARISS Web site. The Boy Scouts of America radio station K2BSA will be set up and several amateur radio activities are planned, including a possible link-up with the ISS. Under Ham Radio in Space is a story, "Three Hams in Next ISS Crew" which talks about the recently launched Expedition 24 crew, as well as another posting, "AMSAT Hamvention Videos Posted On-Line," that provides a link to the recent videos, one of which is an update on ARISSat-1. Astronaut Caldwell-Dyson Speaks with ISIS Andrea Ponti via ARISS On Monday, June 7, students from ISIS Andrea Ponti in Gallarate, Varese, Italy, linked up with on-orbit astronaut Tracy Caldwell-Dyson, KF5DBF via an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact. An audience of more than 250 students, teachers and visitors, located in several classrooms and connected by multimedia screens, were present for the contact. ARISS mentor Francesco De Paolis, IK0WGF introduced the event and ARISS activities with a presentation via phone line. The event was distributed via webcast and was covered by the local media and newspapers. This contact was the final event of several cross-curricular activities involving different school subjects including Science, History, Geography, Math, Information Technology and English. 3. ARISS News on Amateur Radio Newsline On June 11, the Amateur Radio Newsline Report 1713 included a short story titled, "Radio from Space: Astroham Congratulates WIA on its 100th Anniversary." The article is about Tracy Caldwell-Dyson's ARISS contact during the WIA's anniversary dinner in which she sent greetings and talked about the advancements in communications over the years. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report June 7, 2010 1. Tracy Caldwell-Dyson Holds ARISS Contact with Italian Students On Saturday, June 5, Expedition 23/24 astronaut Tracy Caldwell-Dyson, KF5DBF took part in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with students, ages 6 - 10, attending Istituto Comprensivo Camaiore - Scuola Secondaria 1° Grado "M. Rosi," in Camaiore, Italy. ARISS mentor Francesco De Paolis, IK0WGF introduced the event and ARISS activities with a presentation via phone line to an audience of more than 150 students, teachers, visitors and media. Caldwell-Dyson managed to answer the students' 20 questions with enough time left for an exchange of greetings and thanks. The ARISS contact highlighted the students' science lessons covering space and radio communications. Regional media and newspapers such as RAI3 Toscana and Il tirreno covered the event. 2. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at ISIS Andrea Ponti, Gallarate, Varese, Italy on 07 June. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 09:40 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and I2JRY. The contact should be audible over Italy and adjacent area. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Technical Industrial State Institute (ITIS) was established on 1st October 1959, in Gallarate, as a textile course with its head office in Giovane Italia square. From 1961, the School opens the Telecommunication specialization. Later, in 1964, the Industrial Electronics specialization and in 1969-70 the Electrotechnics specialization are added. In 1999 the Aeronautics Constructions course starts and in 2004 even the Industrial Computer Science. The school is attended by 1000 students aged 14-19. For teaching activities there are 16 laboratories, a library, a main hall, two gyms and outdoor sports facilities. Inside the school the amateur ARI Radio Club IQ2GM. The school is also owner of the callsign I2JRY. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How does the Earth appear from Space? 2. How long does it take to go into orbit from Earth? 13. How long does it take to build a new Space Shuttle? 14. What happens if you fall sick? Could a doctor from Earth go up to the ISS? 15. How long does a mission last? 16. How long have you studied for doing this job? 18. How do you communicate with your family? 19. What is your typical daily routine? 20. When you were a child, did you wish for becoming an astronaut? 21. What is the most beautiful thing in Space? 21. Is it difficult to become an astronaut? 23. The Comprehensive Institute "Camaiore 2" is located in Lido di Camaiore, a little Tuscan town on the beautiful Tyrrhenian coast of Versilia. Lido di Camaiore is a very nice seaside resort which attracts a lot of Italian and foreign tourists every summer. It is not far from Torre del Lago, the home town of the great opera composer "Giacomo Puccini". The famous "Festival Pucciniano" takes place every year. Music is an important subject at school. Many different performances, shows and musicals are played by the students. They are full of enthusiasm. Ages of the students: 6 to 10 years. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Does hovering in the spaceship feel like being under water? 2. What health effects can be caused by a long mission? 3. What are the major differences between living in Space and living on Earth? 4. How would you describe your feelings about being away from Earth? 5. Have you a special diet during the mission and what do you eat and drink for breakfast, lunch and dinner? 14. How many hours a day do you work and how many hours do you sleep? 15. Do you have a sound sleep in Space and what do you dream? 16. What do you do in your spare time? 17. Have you ever been in a critical situation onboard the ISS? 18. Have you ever been scared during your mission? 19. Have you ever had doubts about you might not come back to Earth? 20. What would be the duration you can imagine to live in Space, away from Earth? Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report May 31, 2010 1. Upcoming School Contacts Istituto Comprensivo Camaiore - Scuola Secondaria 1° Grado "M. Rosi," Camaiore, Italy has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Saturday, June 5 at 10:21 UTC. Students participating in the contact have learned about space science, principles of radio communications and the benefits of space exploration and have prepared to use English in a real life situation. ISIS Andrea Ponti, located in Gallarate, Varese, Italy, has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Monday, June 7 at 09:40 UTC. The contact is the final event of several cross-curricular activities involving different school subjects including Science, History, Geography, Math, Information Technology and English. Students have learned about the solar system and its origins, the Space Conquest and its wide range of applications in everyday life (television broadcast by satellite, Internet, meteorological conditions) and scientific research. 2. ARISS Contact Highlights WIA Centenary Event On Saturday, May 29, students from Trinity Christian School in Canberra, Australia attended a special dinner to celebrate the Wireless Institute of Australia (WIA) centenary through participation in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact. Telebridge station ON4ISS in Belgium provided the connection. On-orbit astronaut Tracy Caldwell-Dyson, KF5DBF sent greetings to the WIA and congratulated the group on its anniversary. She then went on to answer the ten questions prepared by the students. The WIA has posted an article on the event to its Web site.
