An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at 2010 National Boy Scout Jamboree, Fort A. P. Hill, Virginia on 31 July. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 18:21 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and K2BSA/4. The contact should be audible over the eastern U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Boy Scouts of America The Boy Scouts of America organization was incorporated on February 8, 1910 and chartered by the United States Congress in 1916. Scouting in the United States is to provide an educational program for boys and young adults that will build character, train youth in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and to develop personal fitness through rich experiences. 2010 National Scout Jamboree July 26 - Aug. 4, 2010 One hundred years of Scouting in the United States will come to life at the 2010 National Scout Jamboree as approximately 45,000 Scouts, leaders, and staff from all 50 states, territories, and foreign countries will have the opportunity to live, work, and play together in an atmosphere of Scouting fellowship. The setting for the quadrennial jamboree is Fort A. P. Hill, near Bowling Green, VA. Scouting Merit Badge Programs In part, scouts learn about science, math, technology, sports, crafts, business and future careers as they are exposed to the merit badge program. There are more than 100 merit badges offered in all fields to scouting youth. Merit Badges other than Radio include other technical content such as Electronics, Electricity, Engineering, Medical, Photography, Computers and more. Scouts select a subject they want to know more about then talk with a scouting leader about their interests. The scout then follows requirements for the merit badge he selected. A counselor who has special knowledge in the merit badge subject is assigned to assist the youth in finishing the requirements. When the scout is ready he calls the counselor to show he has met the requirements. When the counselor is satisfied the scout has met each requirement, the Merit Badge application may be approved. Once approved by the Scoutmaster, the scout will receive the specific merit badge emblem that can then be secured to his uniform. Amateur Radio Amateur Radio is included in the BSA Radio Merit Badge requirements. Requirements for the Radio Merit Badge include explaining different types of radio communications, diagramming how radio waves propagate, recognizing and discussing the electromagnetic spectrum, safety precautions when around radio gear, understanding and explaining electrical circuits, participating in a 10 minute radio contact using voice or CW, explaining Q signals, the proper use of radio and emergency communications and a visit to a working radio station such as K2BSA at the National Jamboree. By the ARISS team facilitating a QSO with K2BSA scouts, the ISS crew members will assist in building a love and interest on the part of youth toward becoming involved in the sciences and the International Space Program. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. I am a Boy Scout, do you think our scouting programs could have a positive effect on space exploration? If so, how? 2. What sort of obstacles did you have to tackle to become an astronaut? 3. Are astronauts taught like Boy Scouts to improvise support devices or tools if equipment fails? 4. Looking back at Earth what strikes you the most about the view of planet Earth? 5. Are astronauts in danger of micro-particles hitting them or the International Space Station? If so what protection does one have? 6. As you look back at Earth are you able to see the oil-spill in the Gulf of Mexico and if so what are your thoughts? 7. What do you notice about the effects of weightlessness on your body and do you expect a long-term effect? 8. What is your primary work assignment on the ISS? 9. Has your appetite changed now that you are at the International Space Station? If so how? 10. Do you find the space station a noisy place? If so why? 11. Are you and your team performing experiments that absolutely require human involvement? If so Why? 12. Do you think humans will be able to achieve long-range space exploration and settlements? If so what must be accomplished first? 13. What kind of extra training did you have to take to be in space for a prolonged time? 14. What was your favorite subject in school and why? 15. Are you a Boy Scout, and if so, did you make it to Eagle? 16. Where did you go to college and what were your degree(s)? 17. Do you have a favorite constellation if so what and why? 18. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report July 26, 2010 1. Upcoming School Contact An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for the 2010 National Boy Scout Jamboree in Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia on Saturday, July 31 at 18:21 UTC. The jamboree is being planned for about 43,000 Scouts and leaders in 825 troops, plus some 5,000 staff members for support, program and headquarters services. The K2BSA Amateur Radio Demonstration Area is a hot spot of activity throughout the Jamboree. At past Jamborees, thousands of Scouts toured K2BSA. More than 300 earned their Radio Merit Badges and more than 100 new Technician licenses were earned. The club supporting this event is the K2BSA Amateur Radio Association. 2. ARISS Contact with International Space University Students On Wednesday, July 21, International Space University in Illkirch-Graffenstaden, France, participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with Shannon Walker, KD5DXB on the ISS. Twelve questions were answered and regional television covered the event. In preparation for their contact, students studied the basics of satellite communications and learned about human spaceflight and space exploration. 3. ARRL Covers 2010 National Scout Jamboree The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) posted a story on its web page covering the upcoming 2010 National Boy Scout Jamboree during which an ARISS contact is planned. Astronaut Training Status Astronauts Ron Garan, KF5GPO, and Mike Fossum, KF5AQG, each successfully completed a simulated Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with the Challenger Learning Center of Indianapolis on Thursday, July 22. Garan and Fossum answered 14 and 22 questions respectively during their contacts. These training sessions were terrestrial-based amateur radio contacts using ARISS equivalent equipment. 6. Astronaut T. J. Creamer Participates in ISS Ham Debrief An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) debrief session was held with Expedition 22/23 astronaut T. J. Creamer, KC5WKI on Monday, July 19. The feedback received will help ARISS with its program operations. 7. ARISS International Team Meeting Held The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) International Team teleconference was held on Tuesday, July 20. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report July 19, 2010 1. Upcoming School Contact International Space University (ISU), located in Illkirch-Graffenstaden, France, has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Wednesday, July 21 at 15:36 UTC. The university provides interdisciplinary educational programs to students and space professionals in an international, intercultural environment. Over 130 students are enrolled in the ISU Space Studies Program through which they will learn the basics of satellite communications. They will also study human spaceflight and learn about the legal aspects of space exploration and international cooperation. The ARISS contact will be the featured activity of this program. 2. ARISS Contact with Girl Guides of Canada On Friday, July 16, the Girl Guides of Canada spoke with on-orbit astronaut Doug Wheelock, KF5BOC via an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact. The initial call to the ISS was made by the Commissioner of Girl Guides of Canada. Wheelock then answered 14 questions posed to him by twelve girls while an audience of approximately 2000 Girl Guides and Girl Scouts from around the world looked on. The girls had gathered at Guelph Lake, Ontario for the Guiding Mosaic 2010 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Girl Guides in Canada. The Guides prepared for the contact by studying orbital mechanics and learning about the value of successful international partnerships. 3. MAI-75 Experiment Activated The Russian ISS crew members activated the MAI-75 (Moscow Aviation Institute) experiment on July 15 and 16. The system operated Space Cam in slide show mode using the Martin 1 format. Among those who captured Slow Scan Television (SSTV) images transmitted by the crew were ground stations in South America, Europe and Africa. Astronaut Training Status - Upcoming Simulation Contacts Astronauts Ron Garan, KF5GPO, and Mike Fossum, KF5AQG, have been scheduled for simulated Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contacts with the Challenger Learning Center of Indianapolis on Thursday, July 22 at approximately 16:00 UTC and 16:15 UTC respectively. The contact should be available on IRLP (Internet Radio Linking Project) Node 9010. These training sessions are terrestrial-based amateur radio contacts using ARISS equivalent equipment. 5. ARRL Story on Upcoming CLC Contacts The ARRL (American Radio Relay League) Indiana Section July Newsletter includes a story about the upcoming Challenger Learning Center (CLC) of Indianapolis contacts (training sessions) with Ron Garan and Mike Fossum. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at International Space University, Illkirch-Graffenstaden, France on 21 July. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 15:36 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and F6KQV. The contact should be audible over portions of France and eastern Europe. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The International Space University (www.isunet.edu) provides graduate-level training to the future leaders of the emerging global space community at its Central Campus in Strasbourg, France, and at locations around the world. In its two-month Space Studies Program and one-year Masters program, ISU offers its students a unique Core Curriculum covering all disciplines related to space programs and enterprises - space science, space engineering, systems engineering, space policy and law, business and management, and space and society. A few problems with the TX keying up there I think. 12.52utc UK pass - tx de-keyed before the 12.54utc image was complete. 14.27utc UK pass - tx keyed up half way through the 14.31utc image, the carrier then remained up until the next image at 14.33utc after which it dropped correctly. David G8OQW

MAI-75 activation planned for July 15-16

Sergey Samburov has announced that an activity to support SSTV activation (MAI-75) has been schedule on July 15 and 16. Times fall between 12:00-15:00 UTC on the 15th and 10:00-12:00 UTC on the 16th . The system will be operating space cam in slide show mode and is expected to use the Martin 1 format. The times are just over 1 orbit each day (two passes over Moscow) so opportunities will be very limited. The contact should be audible over portions of eastern Canada. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Guiding Mosaic 2010 is an international Girl Guide / Girl Scout event that focuses on girls doing program work in various fields and scopes of interest. This includes science & technology, sports, waterfront, arts & crafts, and more. The girls were able to choose what program activities they would like to do. Guiding Mosaic 2010 encourages young girls to learn more about issues that are important to them, while developing skills in areas that they are interested in, and learning new ones that they may never have been able to explore before camp. Consequently, they also participate in theme days with guest speakers and activities that focus on the global community, environment, and social awareness. They will volunteer in the local community, attend adventurous out-trips, all while creating friendships, making memories, and celebrating the sisterhood of Guiding. Participants range in age from 12-17, all with various backgrounds and interests, but all who are members of the largest international organization for women. The highlight of camp will be the NASA ARISS contact to (hopefully) occur on the last day of program. Girls have prepared for this by posing questions to ask the ISS astronauts, learning some orbital mechanics, and writing about the value of successful international partnerships of which the ISS is an example. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. What would I have to do to become an astronaut someday? 2. How many astronauts are on the Space Station at a time? 3. Where, and for how long, do you have to go to school to be an astronaut? 4. What qualities do Girl Guides and Girl Scouts have that would make them good astronauts? 5. If you are always floating around in the Space Station how do you keep from bumping into things when you are asleep? 6. How do you move from one place to another in the Space Station if you are floating and can't really walk? 7. Do you still have to wear shoes if all you do is float? 8. Do you get your own bedroom on the Space Station and if so how do you keep your personal things from floating into someone else's space? 9. Are the lights turned off in your sleeping space when you have to go to sleep? 10. How do you take out the garbage in space? 11. Without gravity is there any point to combing your hair while living on the Space Station? If so do you use mousse or gel in your hair to keep it in place? 12. What do you like the most about living and working in the Space Station? 13. What do you find to be the most challenging part of living on the Space Station? 14. How long do astronauts stay on the Space Station? 15. What kind of experiments do you do and how would they help people back on Earth? 16. What do astronauts do when they have personal time? Can you watch TV or listen to the radio on the Space Station? 17. If I was on the Space Station now would I be able to text my friends on Earth? 18. How do you boil water to make hot chocolate on the Space Station if the water is always floating around? 19. Which way would a sunflower grow if it were on the Space Station? 20. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report July 12, 2010 1. Upcoming School Contacts The Girl Guides of Canada have been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Friday, July 16 at 17:47 UTC. Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, ages 12-17, are participating in the Guiding Mosaic 2010 which is being held July 8-17 at Guelph Lake, Ontario to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Girl Guides in Canada. The event focuses on girls doing program work in various fields including science and technology, sports, waterfront and arts and crafts. They have prepared for their ARISS contact by studying orbital mechanics and learning about the value of successful international partnerships. International Space University (ISU), located in Illkirch-Graffenstaden, France, has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Wednesday, July 21 at 15:36 UTC. The university provides interdisciplinary educational programs to students and space professionals in an international, intercultural environment. Over 130 students are enrolled in the ISU Space Studies Program through which they will learn the basics of satellite communications. They will also study human spaceflight and learn about the legal aspects of space exploration and international cooperation. The ARISS contact will be the featured activity of this program. 2. Successful Contact with Camp Cavett On Thursday, July 8, children attending Cavett Kids Foundation's Camp Cavett in Kingston, Oklahoma, participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with on-orbit astronaut Doug Wheelock, KF5BOC. Wheelock's question and answer session was the culmination of radio activities in which the youth were introduced to the basics of radio wave propagation. Local radio clubs gave demonstrations to the youth and assisted with other hands on activities. Media coverage included television and newspapers as well as CQ Magazine. Additional interviews were given to radio stations prior to the contact. 3. ISS Makes General Contacts Over the July 10 - 11 weekend, Doug Wheelock, KF5BOC made several general contacts with ground stations around the world including those in the U.S., Canada, Australia and Europe. 4. MAI-75 Experiment to be Activated The Russian ISS crew members plan to activate the MAI-75 (Moscow Aviation Institute) experiment on July 15 and 16 at approximately 10:00 - 12:00 UTC, (mode to be determined). It may be possible for some ground stations to receive Slow Scan Television (SSTV) images transmitted by the crew. Astronaut Training Status Astronauts Ron Garan, KF5GPO, and Mike Fossum, KF5AQG, have been scheduled for simulated Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contacts with the Challenger Learning Center of Indianapolis on Thursday, July 22 at approximately 16:00 UTC and 16:15 UTC respectively. These training sessions are terrestrial-based amateur radio contacts using ARISS equivalent equipment. 6. ESA Covers ARISS Contact with Italian Campers The European Space Agency posted a story on the recent ARISS contact held with the summer camp "Astronauts in Forest," in Perugia, Italy. Ariss casual phone contacts

How about letting us know why there are no casual contacts anymore and only rehearsed and choreographed public shows. I read many times about how busy the astronauts are but it is glaringly apparent they have no interest or are refraining from unrehearsed contacts. They could at least turn on the cross band repeater. The navy had enough control over the amateur radio with the packet. Frankly, I am personally no longer interested in talking to the astronauts but the repeater was a lot of fun. Someone please make it happen. A mere citizen pat

An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Cavett Kids Foundation's Camp Cavett, OU Medical Center, Kingston, OK on 08 July. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 20:35 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and W5PAA. The contact should be audible over the central U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Cavett Kids Foundation's mission is to provide a forum of support through various camps, events and programs for children with life-threatening or chronic illnesses while promoting character, coping skills and connection. Camp Cavett is the largest camp that takes 160 kids from all walks of life with all kinds of medical problems and uses the setting at Lake Texoma to promote the character, coping and connections needed to overcome their obstacles. This setting provides an informal forum for dialogue among kids and medical personnel. They build understanding about their disease processes; they learn interpersonal skills and self-care; and they identify actions steps to deal with their social needs. Character, increased self-esteem and self-confidence are the results of the education process entwined in camp activities. When campers return home, they are empowered to manage their diseases and their lives more completely. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How difficult is it to move around with no gravity? 2. What decisions in life have helped get you to here? 3. Do you become frightened at anytime and what do you do? 4. Upcoming School Contact Cavett Kids Foundation's Camp Cavett, based out of OU Medical Center in Kingston, Oklahoma, has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Thursday, July 8 at 20:35 UTC. The mission of the Cavett Kids Foundation is to provide a forum of support through various camps, events, and programs for children with life-threatening and chronic illnesses while promoting character, coping skills, and connection. Using ARRL (American Radio Relay League) lesson plans, children will be introduced to the basics of radio wave propagation and local radio clubs will assist with demonstrations and hands on activities. 2. Astronaut Speaks with Summer Camp via ARISS Expedition 24 astronaut Doug Wheelock, KF5BOC participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with summer camp "Astronauts in Forest," in Perugia, Italy on Friday, July 2. The connection was provided by telebridge station ON4ISS in Belgium. Wheelock managed eight questions put to him by the camp which was attended by twenty children and four staff members. The camp, which is based on astronomy and space education, provides a program of space activities for children, ages 11 to 14. 3. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Summer camp "Astronauts in forest", Perugia, Italy on 2 July. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 19:52 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between OR4ISS and ON4ISS. The contact should be audible over Belgium and adjacent areas. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The educational proposal regards a program of space activities during the summer camp "Astronauts in forest" for children from 11 to 14 years that takes place in Umbria - Castel Rigone (PG). The camp is organized by Panda Avventure srl that is a Company established in Rome in 1990 to organize tourist activities, environmental and educational programs for groups in Italy and abroad. Since 1990, in cooperation with WWF -Italy, we organize outdoor holidays and school camps for young people between the ages of 6 and 17 and holidays for groups of families with children. Every year participants number more than 3500. We organized Summer Space Camp for ESA in Spain (1999 and 2000) and in Italy (2002) We conduct different kinds of tourist resorts for groups in Italy and abroad that include an Hostel for 60 people in Umbria, near Trasimeno Lake. Since 2009, at the Hostel La Foresta, Panda Avventure - in cooperation with WWF Italy - organized a summer space camp related to space discovery - "Astronauts in Forest"- for children from 11 to 14 years. The camp was supported by ESA - ESRIN that cooperated to the programme and provided the educational material. The summer camp is aimed to let children understand that it is necessary to study and protect our environment, that space researches are very important for the future of our Planet and young generations; also to initiate them to the use of scientific instruments. During summer 2010 we will organize 8 school camps related to space: On July 2010 - 4 summer camps for about 100 children in all will be entirely based on astronomy and space education. On August 2010 - 4 summer camps for about 120 children in all, will be mostly based on nature discovery but will include also researches and activities about space and the study of English (as one of Astronauts' common languages). Participants will ask as many of the following questions (translated) as time allows: 1. Why is the ISS composed of many modules? 2. What is the actual size of the ISS? 3. How long have you been in Space? 4. What exactly is your role in the crew? 5. Is it fun to live without gravity? 6. What is your typical daily routine? 7. When you were a child, did you wish for becoming an astronaut? 8. What is the most beautiful thing in Space? 9. How long does the training before the mission to the ISS? 10. What kind of problems do you usually have on board the ISS? 11. Is the team spirit important for a successful space enterprise? 12. What do you learn from your space experience? 13. How many hours a day do you work? 14. What do you usually do in your free time? 15. What can you see from the ISS? 16. What happens if you fall sick? 17. How do you communicate with your family? 18. How would you describe your feelings about being away from Earth? 19. What would be the duration you can imagine to live in Space? 20. What are the steps to become an astronaut? Audio from this contact will be fed into the EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers. Audio is generally transmitted around 15 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. Please note that on Echolink there are automatic breaks of 1.5 seconds in the audio transmission. These occur every 2.5 minutes during the event. ** Contact times are approximate.
