Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report August 30, 2010 1. Successful Contact with South Hobart Primary School On Friday, August 27, South Hobart Primary School in South Hobart, Tasmania, Australia experienced a successful Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact via telebridge station K6DUE in Greenbelt, Maryland. On-orbit astronaut Doug Wheelock, KF5BOC answered 7 out of 10 prepared questions before the ISS went over the horizon. ARISS member Dave Taylor stepped in to provide answers to the last few questions. The ARISS contact was incorporated into the school science curriculum through lessons covering the solar system, space exploration and the history of astronomy. 2. New ARISS-U.S. Delegate AMSAT President Barry Baines has appointed Dave Taylor, W8AAS as the AMSAT U.S. delegate to the ARISS-International team. SB SAT @ AMSAT $ANS-241.04 David Taylor W8AAS Appointed AMSAT's US Delegate to ARISS-International AMSAT News Service Bulletin 241.04 >From AMSAT HQ SILVER SPRING, MD. August 29, 2010 To All RADIO AMATEURS BID: $ANS-241.04 AMSAT President Barry Baines, WD4ASW has appointed David Taylor, W8AAS of Columbia, MD as AMSAT's US delegate to ARISS-International (ARISS-I). Dave replaces Barry Baines, WD4ASW who was holding the position temporarily following the resignation of Will Marchant, WC6ROL in 2009. ARISS is 'Amateur Radio on the International Space Station'. Barry noted, "I am pleased to appoint Dave, W8AAS as our new ARISS- International delegate. Dave has extensive experience with the ARISS program, having participated as a trainer and procedure writer, ground station operator, school contact mentor and operations coordinator. His extensive knowledge of day-to-day operations of ARISS coupled with his exposure to the workings of ARISS-I as an observer as well as sup- porting the efforts of past AMSAT human spaceflight activities makes him well qualified to serve as AMSAT's representative and advocate for amateur radio in space." Dave was first licensed in 1970 and has been involved with SAREX/ARISS since 2000. He holds an Extra Class amateur radio license. ARISS-I is a working group consisting of a consortium of national amateur radio organizations and AMSAT organizations of the host countries represented on the International Space Station. ARISS-I serves as the 'unified voice of amateur radio' in working with the space agencies that manage the ISS. Since ARISS is international in scope, the team coordinates locally with their respective space agency (e.g. ESA, NASA, JAXA, CSA, and the Russian Space Agency) and as an international team through ARISS working group meetings, teleconferences and through electronic mail. In North America, the US delegates are Rosalie White, K1STO (appoint- ed by the ARRL) and David Taylor, W8AAS (appointed by AMSAT). The Canadian delegates are Daniel Lamoureux, VE2KA (appointed by Radio Amateurs of Canada) and Maurice-André Vigneault, VE3VIG (appointed by AMSAT). In addition there are four European delegates, two Japan- ese delegates, and two Russian delegates. The Chairman of ARRIS-I is Gaston Bertels, ON4WF. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Konu Milky Way School Contact Exec Committee, Miyoshi, Hiroshima, Japan on 30 Aug. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 09:15 UTC.The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds.The contact will be direct between NA1SS and 8J4MW. The contact should be audible over Japan. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. We are children from a little town in the country side of Hiroshima, Japan. We started the ARISS School Contact Project one and a half years ago with the help of our parents. We were sixth grade elementary school students back then. When we heard it was possible to talk to you on the ISS we got really excited about it and thought that would be a really cool thing to do.That is how we got started. We have so far had twenty-nine study gatherings and we are now almost ready for our contact with the help of our parents and friends. We are all really looking forward to making contact and believe it will be a truly unforgettable experience. And we continue to practice hard to make this once in a lifetime experience go smoothly. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at South Hobart Primary School, South Hobart, Tasmania, Australia on 27 Aug. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 06:43 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and K6DUE. The contact should be audible over eastern portions of the U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. South Hobart Primary School is located in one of Hobart's oldest and most diverse suburbs. The picturesque school grounds have Mt Wellington as a backdrop and are adjacent to the Hobart Rivulet. South Hobart Primary School was originally named the Upper Macquarie Street School and the 150th anniversary of the school's founding was celebrated in 2008. Today, the school caters for 246 students from Kindergarten to Year 6 students, from the inner-city suburb of South Hobart, as well as the communities of Fern Tree and Ridgeway. Access to the CBD and the establishment of an on-site Long Day Care Centre and After School Care, has also seen the school attract enrollments from outside the local area. Over the past eight years, the school's student population has doubled. South Hobart Primary's key purpose is to nurture students, promote a positive attitude to life and learning and to develop the skills needed to be an active participant in the community, now and in the future. What happens to all the waste: human waste and food scraps that are created while you are on the space station? 10. What level of connection do you have with Earth in regard to receiving current affairs/news and communications with your family? South Hobart P/S ARISS contact a success

Hello All, The linkup between South Hobart Primary School was a success with astronaut Doug Wheelock answering 7 of the 10 questions. Despite some difficulty for the first 2-3 minutes signals then came up and held well till LOS. The t'bridge was through K6DUE operated by Dave Taylor W8AAS and assisted by Mark Steiner K3MS and Burnie Hahn N6ZOA After the ISS went over the horizon Dave did a brilliant job and answered the 3 remaining student questions. Please join us in listening to the ISS contact with South Hobart Primary School, South Hobart, Tasmania, Australia on Friday 27th August at 06:43 UTC. This will be a telebridge and the Ground Station will be K6DUE. Audio from this contact will be fed into the IRLP 'Discovery' Reflector (9010) and the EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report August 23, 2010 1. Upcoming School Contact South Hobart Primary School, South Hobart, Tasmania, Australia has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Friday, August 27 at 06:43 UTC via station K6DUE in Greenbelt, Maryland. The ARISS activity has been incorporated into the school science curriculum through lessons covering the solar system, space exploration and the history of astronomy. Students completed research projects on the planets of the solar system, kept phases of the moon diaries and wrote stories and poetry relating to these topics. 2. Da Vinci Science Center Contact was a Success On Wednesday, August 18, astronaut Doug Wheelock, KF5BOC on the ISS participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with the DaVinci Science Center in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Telebridge station LU8YY in Argentina facilitated the connection. Approximately 80 campers watched as Wheelock answered ten questions put to him by 8 first and second graders. The contact was integrated into Da Vinci's 2010 Summer Camp Program. Students learned about space through lessons from the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Education Office. In addition, the Delaware-Lehigh Amateur Radio Club provided instruction on Amateur Radio and demonstrated VHF to the youngsters. The Morning Call posted an article on the event. ARRL Article on Boy Scout Jamboree The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) posted a web story on the 2010 National Boy Scout Jamboree, held in Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia on July 26-August 4, which incorporated an ARISS contact into its amateur radio activities. Six thousand scouts toured the K2BSA demonstration station, 210 scouts earned Radio merit badges and 147 people were licensed during the event. ARISS International Team Meeting Held The ARISS International Team held its monthly teleconference on Tuesday, August 17. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and LU8YY. The contact should be audible over portions of South America. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Da Vinci Science Center offers hands-on science activities for youth and families out of its modern facility, opened in October of 2005 and located on the Campus of Cedar Crest College in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Wednesday's ISS contact will be held during the Da Vinci Science Center's Summer Camp Program for 2010. We have an average of 650 campers who attend camp each year. This program will be offered as part of the Mission Milky Way science camp offered August 16th-20th, 2010. The campers are entering 1st and 2nd grades, but we will open up the event to other campers (entering 1st grade through 7th grade in the fall), and visitors/members that will be in our building the day of the contact. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report August 16, 2010 1. Upcoming School Contact An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled with the DaVinci Science Center in Allentown, Pennsylvania on Wednesday, August 18 at 15:36 UTC via station LU8YY in Argentina. The Center has integrated this activity into its Summer Camp Program for 2010. Students have learned about space through lessons from the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Education Office and Astronaut Terry Hart is expected to give presentations. The Delaware-Lehigh Amateur Radio Club has provided instruction on Amateur Radio, how it works, what it is and its uses, how the ARISS radio systems work, the international ham radio team, satellite tracking, radio wave propagation and the organizations that sponsor ARISS. The club will also provide VHF demonstrations and multi-media presentations to the group which will enhance the center's 200 hands-on exhibits that promote the understanding of science and technology. 2. QST Covers ARISS The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) September issue of QST carried an item in the "Inside HQ" column about how NASA ISS crew members participated in one or more ARISS educational activities per week during the first half of 2010. The ARRL monthly journal has a circulation of 150,000. 3. ISS Ham Debrief Scheduled An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) debrief session has been scheduled with Expedition 22/23 astronaut Soichi Noguchi, KD5TVP on Tuesday, August 17. The feedback provided on the radio system and school contacts will help the ARISS program update its operations.

ISS and meteors

I was wondering if the perseids are visble from the ISS, and if so via the live camera on nasa-tv. I looked at the live cam at around 1400 utc and thought I saw meteor trails flashing in the darkness. I know fixed objects on the iss come in and out of sunshine at strange angles, and at the time I could see the solar array adjusting its angle, but these looked different. anybody any ideas? 73 de andy g0sfj

Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report August 9, 2010 1. Successful ARISS Contact Held with Boy Scout Space Jamboree An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held with Boy and Girl Scouts in Rantoul, Illinois on Sunday, August 8. On-orbit astronaut Doug Wheelock, KF5BOC answered 14 questions prepared for him by the Scouts. The contact was part of the Space Jamboree held at the Rantoul National Aviation Center. Scouts from over eight states in the Midwest attended and earned merit badges in Space Exploration, Aviation, Robotics, Radio & Electronics and others. 2. ARRL Article on ARISS School, Greenville Elementary The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) posted a story on Greenville Elementary School whose teacher worked to have his students licensed in order to become a NASA Explorer School (NES). In the process, 3 teachers and 17 students were licensed with the help of Okaw Valley Amateur Radio Club. Amateur Radio Newsline Covers ARISS Event On Friday, August 6, the Amateur Radio Newsline Report 1721 posted two items covering the 2010 National Boy Scout Jamboree held in Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia on July 31. The first story, "Ham Radio in Space: ISS to Scouting Jamboree Contact Success," covers the ARISS contact with astronaut Doug Wheelock. The second story, "That Final Item: Ham Radio and the Best Scouting Jamboree Ever," talks about the Jamboree, the 5,000 people that toured the K2BSA demonstration station, the 200 Scouts that earned the Radio Merit Badge, and the 130 people who were licensed during the event. Contact is a go for: Sunday 8th August, 09:12 UTC. *** This contact MAY BE CANCELLED due to a cooling pump failure on the ISS. As I'm typing this the crew are in the process of swapping out the faulty unit. Hopefully all will be well! *** Audio from this contact will be fed into the EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers. Audio is generally transmitted around 15 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. Please note that on Echolink there are automatic breaks of 1.5 seconds in the audio transmission. These occur every 2.5 minutes during the event. ** Contact times are approximate. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Boy Scout Space Jamboree, Rantoul, IL on 8 Aug. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 09:12 UTC.The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. NOTE: DUE TO COOLING PROBLEMS ONBOARD THE ISS, THE CONTACT COULD BE ABORTED AT THE LAST MINUTE. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and WB9SA. The contact should be audible over the central U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. Advances in science and technology are redefining the world around us. Boy Scouting is changing also, and while we are still teaching traditional pioneer skills, we recognize that new frontiers require new skills. The astronauts we'll be talking with are today's pioneers; Space, the Moon and Mars are our new frontiers. At this years Space Jamboree we will be offering the usual technology merit badges- Space Exploration, Radio, Electronics (including Robotics), Aviation, Nuclear Science and Composite Materials, but we are also Going Green by adding all of the energy and conservation related merit badges and one 'just for fun'- the Duct Tape merit badge. This year one thousand participants are here from 8 states. Boy and Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts kids from the Don Moyers Boys and Girls Club are in attendance. We are confident that at least one of the youth here today will become an astronaut. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report August 2, 2010 1. Upcoming School Contact An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for the Space Jamboree in Rantoul, Illinois on Saturday, August 7 at 15:07 UTC. The Rantoul National Aviation Center is the former Chanute Air Force Base and is the home of the Chanute Air Museum, which collects, preserves, exhibits and interprets aviation and aerospace artifacts that relate to the life and accomplishments of Octave Chanute, Chanute Field/ Chanute Air Force Base and its technical training programs, the history of military aviation and Illinois aviation. The museum reaches out to youth with Aviation Camp and this year will host the "Space Jam 4" for Boy and Girl Scouts coming from over four states in the Midwest. Merit Badges may be earned in Space Exploration, Aviation, Radio & Electronics and others. 2. Boy Scouts Celebrate Anniversary with ARISS Contact On Saturday, July 31, an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact was held with the 2010 National Boy Scout Jamboree in Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia. Doug Wheelock, KF5BOC answered 13 questions posed to him by the Scouts as approximately 800 others listened in. Prior to the contact, K2BSA Amateur Radio Association set up its radio station which thousands of Scouts toured. Some Scouts earned their Radio Merit Badges and amateur radio licenses as well. This year, the Jamboree celebrates 100 years of Scouting in the U.S., with attendees from all 50 states and other countries around the world. Forty-three thousand are expected to attend. 3. ARISS News on Amateur Radio Newsline On July 30, the Amateur Radio Newsline Report 1720 posted a short story on the upcoming ARISS contact with the Boy Scouts of America.
