Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report September 27, 2010 1. Upcoming School Contact English Estates Elementary School in Fern Park, Florida has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Thursday, September 30 at 18:00 UTC. Through hands on activities, students will learn about space satellite tracking. The school has an established liaison with the Lake Monroe Amateur Radio Club and an on-campus ham radio emergency operations station. 2. Astronaut Doug Wheelock Chats with New York Students On Wednesday, September 22, students from Windsor Central and Owego-Apalachin School Districts in New York participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with astronaut Doug Wheelock, KF5BOC. Wheelock, a graduate of Windsor Central High School, fielded 16 questions put to him by the youth during the ISS pass. The school districts collaborated with the area's Kopernik Observatory and Science Center to put together an education program for the students which included topics on space, radio communication, satellites and rocketry. The final outcome of this project will be the purchase of amateur radio equipment for each school and the formation of amateur radio clubs for the youth. 3. ARISS International Team Meeting Held The monthly ARISS-International team meeting was held on Tuesday, September 21. Topics of discussion included the recent ARISS elections, Columbus Module equipment and a status on ARISSat-1. Minutes have been posted. See: http://www.rac.ca/ariss/arisstel2010-09-21.htm 4. MAI-75 Experiment to be Activated The Russian ISS crew members will activate the MAI-75 (Moscow Aviation Institute) experiment on September 27 - 29. The activity is planned for 2 runs per day over Western Russian between approximately 07:00 - 11:00 UTC. 5. Amateur Radio Newsline Covers ARISS Activities On September 24, the Amateur Radio Newsline Report 1728 included two ARISS related stories. "Ham Radio in Space: ISS ATV Activated Briefly on September 14th" is about the recently held MAI-75 Slow Scan Television session. The second item, "Ham Radio in Space: ARISSAT 1 Near Completion" covers the final preparations of ARISSat-1 prior to shipping to Russia. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Windsor Central School District, Windsor, NY on 22 Sept. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 14:21 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and K2ZRO. The contact should be audible over portions of the eastern US. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Windsor Central School District covers 110 square miles, includes the towns of Kirkwood, Windsor, Colesville and Sanford, and has over 11,000 residents. Windsor is nestled in the rolling hills of Broome County in the Southern Tier of New York. Part suburban and part rural, the district is adjacent to the City of Binghamton. Over 2,120 students are enrolled in Windsor's five schools. The district employs 170 instructional staff. An average of 20 students are in each classroom, fewer than state and local averages. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. How well are plants growing on the space station? 2. What was your most dangerous EVA spacewalk? Why? 3. Have you ever had to deal with runners in the bathroom? 4. What is the most significant discovery or experiment you have made or done since arriving at the ISS? 5. How do Solar Flares affect people on board the ISS? 6. What adjustments have you had to make both mentally and physically while living on the ISS? 7. What is it like to be able to look down on the earth from the space station? 8. How much schooling do you have to go through to get where you are now? 9. Do the stars look the same from the space station as they do from Earth, and is there a day and night? 14. What are you currently working on aboard the Space Station? What are the different jobs on the ISS? 15. Was there anyone who inspired you and helped you believe you could achieve your dreams? If so, Who? 16. What did it feel like physically and emotionally when you were taking off into space? 17. You have been in space a few months now, what kind of things have you been working on and how does this trip differ from your last one? ARISS - Contact Notification

Please join us in listening to the ISS contact with Windsor Central School District, Windsor, NY on Wednesday 22nd September at 14:21 UTC. This is a direct contact and the Ground Station will be K2ZRO. Audio from this contact will be fed into the IRLP 'Discovery' Reflector (9010) and the EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers. IRLP and Echolink audio is generally transmitted around 15 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. Please note that on Echolink there are automatic breaks of 1.5 seconds in the audio transmission. These occur every 2.5 minutes during the event. For your information, when any ARISS event is supported through the IRLP "Discovery" Reflector 9010, audio is also automatically streamed to the Internet. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report September 20, 2010 1. Upcoming School Contact Windsor Central School District and the Owego-Apalachin School District in New York have been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Wednesday, September 22 at 14:21 UTC. The school districts have planned an education program with the area's Kopernik Observatory and Science Center which includes topics such as space, radio communication, satellites and rocketry. The program is planned for thirty-six middle school and high school students from each school district. Students have been chosen through a competition process at each grade level. The final outcome of this project will be the purchase of amateur radio equipment for each school and the formation of amateur radio clubs. 2. Astronaut Shannon Walker Radios Australian Students On Tuesday, September 14, high school students from Perth and Western Australia gathered at Curtin University of Technology to participate in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with astronaut Shannon Walker, KD5DXB on the ISS. The connection was provided by telebridge station LU8YY in Argentina. Walker answered 16 space related questions prepared for her by the students and shared a few words with her husband, Australian astronaut Andy Thomas, who was in Perth to give a presentation on space exploration. 3. Utah Scouts Celebrate Centennial with ARISS Contact On-orbit astronaut Doug Wheelock, KF5BOC conducted an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with scouts from the Utah National Parks Council, Sector 7 in St. George, Utah on Saturday, September 18. The youth celebrated the 100th anniversary of scouting with a centennial jamboree and many completed the requirements for the Space Exploration and Radio merit badges. 4. MAI-75 Experiment Activated The Russian ISS crew members activated the MAI-75 (Moscow Aviation Institute) experiment on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 14 - 15. The system operated Space Cam in slide show mode. Among those who captured Slow Scan Television (SSTV) images transmitted by the crew were ground stations in Asia, Europe and Africa. Astronaut Training Status ESA astronaut Paolo Nespoli, IZ0JPA participated in a simulated ARISS contact with students from Scuola Media Statale "E.Galice," Civitavecchia, Rome, Italy on Tuesday, September 14. The training session was a terrestrial-based amateur radio contact using ARISS equivalent equipment. Nespoli is slated to fly with Expedition 26 in November 2010. 6. Video of ARISS - Norwegian Museum Contact The Norwegian Museum of Science, Technology and Medicine in Oslo, Norway experienced an ARISS contact on September 11. QST Covers ARISS Activities The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) printed several ARISS news items in its October issue of QST, which has a circulation of 150,000. "This Just In" column carried a short section about the Amateur Radio educational activities including ARISS and the radio contact with NASA Astronaut Doug Wheelock, KF5BOC at the National Jamboree. The issue featured a two-page article written by ARISS Delegate Rosalie White called, "ARISS Scores an A+ at Midvalley Elementary." The Correspondence column included a letter from Dave Maley, WA0ZZG, about how exciting it was to make a random contact with Doug Wheelock on the ISS. This will be a direct contact and the Ground Station will be N7B. Audio from this contact will be fed into the EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers. Audio is generally transmitted around 15 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at the Utah National Parks Council, Sector 7, Boy Scouts of America, St.George, Utah on 18 Sept. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 17:10 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between NA1SS and N7B. The contact should be audible over portions of the western U.S. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Boy Scout movement was founded in 1907 by Lord Baden-Powell with the aim of providing a program that would 1)Build Character, 2)Develop Citizenship, and 3)Foster Physical Fitness in the youth of England. Scouting was a immediate success and quickly spread throughout England. In 1910, while on a business trip to London, William D. Boyce found himself lost in a thick London fog. Out of the mist emerged a young uniformed Boy Scout who guided Mr. Boyce to his destination. When he tried to pay this unknown scout, the boy responded, "Oh no sir, I cannot take your money, I am a Boy Scout doing a good turn." Deeply impressed, Mr. Boyce brought the program to America and founded the Boy Scouts of America. Today we join 110 million current and former scouts to celebrate the BSA's 100th year. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report September 13, 2010 1. Upcoming School Contacts University of Western Australia, Astronomy Division, Perth, Western Australia has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Tuesday, September 14 at 10:26 UTC via telebridge station LU8YY in Argentina. Australian astronaut Andy Thomas will give presentations on science and technology careers as well as the benefits of space exploration. High school students who will participate in this event have researched and studied these themes. The students come from schools located in Perth and regional Western Australia and are involved in the Aspire program. Aspire works with schools, communities and educational organizations to raise aspirations amongst high school students in communities typically under-represented in higher education. Western Australia is currently gearing up to potentially host the biggest radio telescope in the world, the Square Kilometre Array. As such, being directly involved in research that furthers our understanding of the Universe is a very real prospect for the students attending this special event and as part of the presentation they will hear more about this mega-science project of the future. An Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact has been scheduled for Utah National Parks Council, Sector 7, Boy Scouts of America in St. George, Utah on Saturday, September 18 at 17:10 UTC. Sector 7 is celebrating the 100th anniversary of scouting in the U.S. with a centennial jamboree. Nearly 4000 scouts are expected to attend the event and will be encouraged to complete the requirements for the Space Exploration and Radio merit badges. 2. ARISS Contact with Norwegian Museum On Saturday, September 11, the Norwegian Museum of Science, Technology and Medicine in Oslo, Norway experienced an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with on-orbit astronaut Doug Wheelock, KF5BOC. The connection was made possible through telebridge station LU8YY in Argentina. Wheelock talked about life in space with the students, answering 10 questions during the session. Approximately 100 people were in attendance. A total of 63,000 students at all levels in the Norwegian school system attend 25 different programs at the museum throughout the year. 3. SSTV to be Activated on ISS The Russian ISS crew members plan to activate Slow Scan Television (SSTV) on September 13 and 14. The activity should run from 12:00 - 16:00 UTC on both days. Crew times indicate that Monday will have monitored activity intended for Western Russia and Tuesday will have monitored activity intended for Northwestern parts of South America. 4. Astronaut Training Status ESA astronaut Paolo Nespoli, IZ0JPA is scheduled for a simulated contact with students from Scuola Media Statale "E.Galice," Civitavecchia, Rome, Italy on Tuesday, September 14 at approximately 19:00 UTC. Audio should be available on IRLP. This training session is a terrestrial-based amateur radio contact using ARISS equivalent equipment. 5. Amateur Radio Newsline Covers ARISS On September 10, the Amateur Radio Newsline Report 1726 included a story about Doug Wheelock, KB5BOC making general contacts from the ISS. The University of Western Australia (UWA) is a leading Australian research university and has an international reputation for excellence, innovation and enterprise. For this very special event we have selected a specific day to coincide with a visit from Australian astronaut Dr. Andy Thomas. As part of his visit Dr. Thomas will deliver a lecture attended by West Australian secondary students from a number of schools on Tuesday the 14th of September. Dr. Thomas' wife, Shannon Walker, is also an astronaut and is expected to be on board the International Space Station on this date making the entire event quite unique for all involved and a great opportunity to attract national and international media coverage. ARISS - Contact Notification

Please join us in listening to the ISS contact with the Norwegian Museum of Science, Technology and Medicine, Oslo on Saturday 11th September at 12:16 UTC. This will be a telebridge and the Ground Station will be LU8YY. Audio from this contact will be fed into the IRLP 'Discovery' Reflector (9010) and the EchoLink *AMSAT* (101377) and *JK1ZRW* (277208) servers. IRLP and Echolink audio is generally transmitted around 15 minutes prior to the contact taking place so that you can hear some of the preparation that occurs. Please note that on Echolink there are automatic breaks of 1.5 seconds in the audio transmission. These occur every 2.5 minutes during the event. For your information, when any ARISS event is supported through the IRLP "Discovery" Reflector 9010, audio is also automatically streamed to the Internet. It is then available via the 'Discovery' Reflector's companion web site www.discoveryreflector.ca . Once on its main page, select "Audio Library" (left sidebar). The prompt to join the audio stream is posted at the top of this page. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at The Norwegian Museum of Science, Technology and Medicine, Oslo, Norway on 11 Sept. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 12:16 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be a telebridge between NA1SS and LU8YY. The contact should be audible over portions of the South America. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in English. The Norwegian Museum of Science, Technology, Industry and Medicine was founded in 1914 in order to help commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Norwegian Constitution. The museum is covering an area of around 25 000 square meters. The visit number is 250,000 per year, 63,000 of them being students in different school programs. The Museum is the biggest children museum in the country. The museum's objective is to demonstrate the implications of progress in Science, Technology, Industry and Medicine, socially and culturally, through the ages. The museum contains permanent exhibitions on transport and aviation, Norwegian industrial history, energy and electricity, music machines, the wood and metal industries, oil, gas and plastics, clocks and watches, calculating machines and computers, as well as a science centre. The most recent addition to the museum is the National Museum of Medicine, opened to the public in 2003. The Science Centre started in 1986 as the first SC in Norway. In addition to interactive exhibitions on reusable energy, the body, mathematics, physical phenomena and astronomy, the centre is involved in exhibition projects around the house. The biggest exhibition success is the award winning exhibition "Climate X" on climate change. The "Climate X" exhibition was awarded "best visitor experience of the year" in 2009 by the Association of Science and Technology centres. In addition to the exhibits the museum is host to big festivals like the "soap bubbles festival" and the "LEGO festival," attracting big crowds every year. Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows: 1. Is it difficult to stay friends living in such a confined space? 2. Do you have a radar to detect small particles that could collide with ISS and what kind of impact can the hull of ISS withstand? 3. What do you eat? You haven't got much fresh food with you? 4. What scientific experiments are being conducted at the Space Station as of today, and has the experiments been giving you any useful information? 5. In what way do you feel difference between "night and day"? 6. This summer it was in the news that you had trouble with the cooling system. We are glad to hear that everything is back to normal. How did you know that the cooling system was down, was it scary and did you ever believe that you had to evacuate the Station? 7. Due to gravity, you constantly need to use energy even though you are not doing any activities here on Earth. Does your metabolism go down due to zero gravity or do you need as much food on board as you do on Earth? 8. Water is lost in many ways; through sweat, bodily waste etc. How much of the water used is being recycled, and what happens to the water you can't recycle? 9. How do you wash yourselves and your clothes? 10. How does it feel when you return to Earth after being in Space? 11. Here on Earth, directions are given due to the gravitation pull, such as what is up and what is down. In zero gravity this might not be the case. How do you give directions inside the Station and do you have a defined floor and ceiling? 12. Is the greatest challenge living on ISS physical or mental? 13. What is the most interesting experience you have had? 14. What do you miss the most from Earth living on ISS and what do you miss the most from ISS on return to the Earth? 15. Do you miss your families and have you any contact with them while you are in Space? 16. How do you pass the time? 17. Are you ever scared as the rocket takes off from the ground or in any other stage of the space flight? 18. How do you sleep? 19. Did you ever dream of becoming an astronaut when you were a child? 20. Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report September 6, 2010 1. Upcoming School Contact The Norwegian Museum of Science, Technology and Medicine, Oslo, Norway has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Saturday, September 11 at 12:16 UTC via telebridge station LU8YY in Neuquen, Argentina. The museum has a small planetarium which offers classes on astronomy and space. A total of 63,000 students at all levels in the Norwegian school system attend 25 different programs at the museum throughout the year. The museum participated in the NASA Albedo Project in 2008 and distributed Galileoscopes during the International Year of Astronomy 2009. 2. Successful Contact with Konu Milky Way Observatory Konu "Milky Way," a children's astronomical observatory in Miyoshi, Hiroshima, Japan, participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Monday, August 30. Shannon Walker, KD5DXB answered 27 questions posed to her by the youth. The observatory provides the general public with an opportunity to observe the night sky and to learn about the ISS and amateur radio. It operates its own club station 8J4MY. 3. Amateur Radio Newsline Covers ARISS On September 3, the Amateur Radio Newsline Report 1725 included a story on Dave Taylor, the new ARISS-U.S. delegate. Astronaut Training Status ESA astronaut Paolo Nespoli, IZ0JPA had an ARISS refresher course on September 3.
