Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Status Report January 17, 2011 1. Upcoming School Contacts Liceum Ogolnoksztalcace Nr I im. Stanislawa Staszica in Ostrowiec Swietokrzyski, Poland has been scheduled for an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Tuesday, January 18 at 12:03 UTC. The school is setting up an astronomy and amateur radio club for the students and there are plans for a series of lectures on astronautical engineering and astronomy. Two Italian schools, Corrado Melone and Ilaria Alpi, located in Ladispoli, Italy have been scheduled for a joint Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact on Tuesday, January 18 at 13:37 UTC. At Ilaria Alpi, students have learned about space, space exploration, the ISS, astronauts' preparation for space flight and radio and telecommunications. Corrado Melone has integrated the contact into lesson plans covering science, Information Technology and geography in order to stimulate the youth's interest in science and space research. 2. Japanese Contact Successful Tsutsujigaoka Minami Elementary School in Akishima, Tokyo, Japan participated in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with on-orbit astronaut Cady Coleman, KC5ZTH on Wednesday, January 12. An audience of approximately 250 students and parents watched as the youth posed 14 questions to the astronaut. Three magazines and a newspaper covered the event. 3. ARISS Contact with Italian Students On Wednesday, January 12, two Italian schools, Istituto Comprensivo Marco Polo-Viani and Istituto delle Suore Mantellate di Viareggio located in Viareggio, Lucca, Italy experienced an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact. Nearly 150 people were present for the event and listened as Paolo Nespoli, IZØJPA spoke with the children, answering 15 of their questions. The contact highlighted a science, technology and space curriculum. 4. Nespoli Speaks with Italian Youth via ARISS On Saturday, January 15, students attending the Istituto Comprensivo Via Toscana 2 in Civitavecchia, Italy took part in an Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) contact with ESA astronaut Paolo Nespoli, IZØJPA. Nespoli answered 12 questions during the first ISS pass. On the following pass, he completed the students' questions and exchanged greetings with Italian Space Agency President Enrico Saggese. Nespoli also talked about the importance of school contacts as well as the 10th anniversary of ARISS contacts in both Italian and English. The event was attended by three hundred people and was covered by national television and other media. 5. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Corrado Melone, Ladispoli and Istituto Comprensivo Ilaria Alpi, district Roma, Italy on 18 Jan. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 13:38 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between IR0ISS and IK0USO. The contact should be audible over Italy and adjacent area. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Italian. Our school "Istituto Comprensivo Ladispoli" is located in Ladispoli, a town by the sea with 40000 inhabitants, 45 km far from Rome. It provides education for 1,105 pupils - boys and girls- in the age range 3-14. Most of the classrooms are in the new building of Via Varsavia while some of the students attend lessons in the classrooms in other buildings and in different locations of the town. We also have a gym, a teacher room, a school library, a school hall, some laboratories, an ICT room, an Art room, a Music room. The Middle School "Corrado Melone" is in Ladispoli, in province of Rome. In this school there are about 1200 students. Age 11 - 14. The teachers will explain students what space stations are and the activities performed by astronauts. We are also interested in meeting the radio amateurs to illustrate their activities to the students. Participants will ask as many of the following questions (translated) as time allows: 1. What are the main aims of your mission? 2. How did you decide to be an astronaut? 3. What do you want to discover or to do in particular on board I.S.S.? 4. What do your family and your friends think about your job? 5. When you were our age, did you think of becoming an astronaut? Was it always your dream? 6. How long did your training to participate in this mission last? 7. How did you spend Christmas time? 8. How is the earth seen from the space? 9. Do you ever think aliens can be observing you? 10. How long does the spaceship take to make an orbit around the earth? 11. When you see the Earth from the space, what do you think about our planet? 12. Have you ever been afraid of space? 13. What are the spacesuits made of? 14. Which things you see or do in the space fascinate you more? 15. What did you have to do in order to prepare for this mission? 16. What's the temperature outside the station? 17. What is the training of an astronaut like? 18. What is the most dangerous moment during the mission, the take-off or the landing? 19. Is the sound of the human voice different in the space? 20. Which projects do you carry out on board? 21. What does the Earth look like from space? 22. What is it living in a small place like the Space shuttle? 23. How long does it take to get to space? 24. What do you eat and drink? 25. Are there any laboratories on the ISS to carry out scientific experiments? 26. How do you shave without gravity? An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Liceum Ogolnoksztalcace Nr I im. Stanislawa Staszica, Ostrowiec Swietokrzyski, Poland on 18 Jan. The contact will be direct between OR4ISS and SP7POS Our school is a Polish state secondary school, located in the south-eastern part of Poland. It is attended by about 540 students, aged 15-18 years. In addition to the main curriculum, the school offers a great variety of after classes optional activities, such as: sport, theatre, science, dance, first aid, astronomy and an amateur radio club. The school policy has always been to stimulate scientific interests, both through school subjects, extracurricular activities and the participation in scientific competitions in the field of Geography, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. We carry out many educational projects, the biggest is "Mathematical and Natural Science as the Key to the Understanding of the World". This project includes additional classes in Physics, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry. Many of our students after graduation start their higher education in science and develop a professional career in academic or scientific research. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Istituto Comprensivo Via Toscana 2 Civitavecchia, Roma, Italy on 15 Jan. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 09:02 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between IR0ISS and IK0WGF. Istituto Comprensivo Via Toscana 2" is middle school located in Civitavecchia, near Rome. The school was named Ennio Galice, one of its best teachers as well as a well-known painter. The present school is the result of the union of two pre-existing ones and today, with its five branches, it operates on a very large area, is attended by 750 students from the age of 3 to 14. Thanks to experienced teachers, sensitive towards social as well as environmental problems our students have always been willing to be involved in projects concerning wide ranging themes. An International Space Station school contact has been planned with participants at Istituto Comprensivo Marco Polo-Viani Scuola Secondaria 1° Grado, Viareggio, Lucca, Italy, and Istituto Suore Mantellate, Viareggio, Lucca, Italy on 12 Jan. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 10:55 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between IR0ISS and IZ5PVC. The contact should be audible over Italy. Interested parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected to be conducted in Italian. The school is situated in the north-centre of Viareggio, in a large building near the seaside and the pinewood. The school is attended by 338 students from the age of eleven to thirteen fourteen. There are 14 classrooms with 43 teachers and a head teacher. The school has an experimental curriculum, that is basic subjects plus additional activities such as Drama, Art, Music, Foreign Languages (Spanish, English, French, German) attended by groups of students. School activities are carried out in special well equipped laboratories. The Institute Suore Mantellate of Viareggio was founded in the mid-1800. The Institute became school in 1913 and with various grade of schools: nursery (kindergarten), elementary school and for female workers and in 1946 the course was full of Middle School and Institute of Science. The school walked with the times and updates and in 1987 he left the testing of an Institute of Science seeks to provide two addresses: biological and psychological fields. Now "High School of Communication." The Institute continues to educate, from primary to secondary school, boys and girls aged 6 to 18 years.
